Reverts PR #5751 (annexSeveredClusters and secondary BFS territory-racing pass) and replaces it with a unified, high-performance bounded territory annexation engine.
Root Cause
Double-Annexation Defect (Replay cUdzr9TawC Tick 5191): PR Annex land a nuke cuts off from the main body #5751 introduced annexSeveredClusters as a secondary pass without removing removeCluster. In landlocked regions with no coast (e.g. Australia), legacy isEnclosed walked through fallout, found no ocean, and annexed one half of the severed nation (Side B: 62,994 tiles). annexSeveredClusters then ran immediately after on the remaining piece in the exact same tick, saw Side A bordering fallout and enemies with no water, and annexed Side A (75,474 tiles) as well—erasing the player in a single tick.
False Sliver Annexations in Inland Empires: Because isEnclosed walked endlessly searching for ocean water, players (human and bot) holding landlocked territory suffered false annexations on normal 2–10 tile border tips whenever an enemy pushed around them, because the walk across the continent never found water.
Flawed Fallout Traversal: PR fix(core): only annex territory that is actually enclosed #5027's isEnclosed treated radioactive fallout as walkable interior space. When a nuke severed an arm on a coastal nation, isEnclosed walked from the arm across the crater into the main body and out to the coast, falsely refusing legitimate nuke annexations.
Performance Spikes: PR Annex land a nuke cuts off from the main body #5751 introduced multi-queue parallel BFS racing across the whole empire (largestTerritoryPart) on candidate pieces, taking 0.43 ms – 0.73 ms per evaluation (and up to 32.0 ms in heavy late-game nuking states).
The Fix
Unifies territory annexation into a single, high-performance pass in PlayerExecution.removeCluster:
Bounded DFS Enclosure: Constrains isEnclosed to the cluster's precomputed bounding box [minX - 1, maxX + 1] x [minY - 1, maxY + 1]. Any interior hole or land expanding outward into the wider empire breaches the fence and aborts in $O(1)$ operations ($< 5$ steps), preventing runaway traversals and protecting inland empires.
Fallout as a Solid Barrier: Restricts traversal strictly to player-owned territory (mySmallID). Radioactive fallout craters and enemy borders act as solid boundary walls (continue), while water and clean unclaimed wilderness remain valid escape paths (return false). Cut-off arms cannot walk across craters to reach the sea.
Sovereign Invariant: The Main Body is crowned by contiguous 4-way territory area (tile count) rather than perimeter length. Equal-area ties (outer perimeter vs. inner holes) are resolved in $O(1)$ by Bounding Box Area ($\text{BBoxArea}(O) > \text{BBoxArea}(H)$).
Inline Diagonal Pinch Detection: Checkerboard corner cuts are detected inline during the single boundary scan, allowing 4-way bounded evaluation without cluster splitting.
Zero-Risk Optimizations: Friendly fast-pathing in isEnclosed, hoisted fence bounds, inlined coordinate arithmetic, inverted execution order (running enclosure before border scanning), and passing pre-resolved captors from surroundedBySamePlayer.
The NationGoldPerMinute snapshot diverges from minute 2 onward because the bounding box fence stops the engine from falsely annexing inland territory next to open wilderness in early-game expansion.

When hasDiagonalPinch(cluster) is true, the cluster skips every annexation path that existed before this PR:
If it's the only cluster, it skips the surroundedBySamePlayer / removeCluster check (L149).
If it's the largest cluster, it skips the same check (L390).
If it's another cluster, classifyCluster is never run (L378), so it never gets CLUSTER_SURROUNDED.
The only path left for it is the pinch branch, and that branch does if (!componentHasFallout || …) continue; (L461–463). So unless fallout is present, nothing in that cluster is ever annexed.
hasDiagonalPinch just looks for a checkerboard 2×2 pattern among border tiles (two of our tiles touching only at a corner). That pattern is common on any front where an attacker takes tiles one at a time. Example: an enclave entirely surrounded by one enemy, with no nukes anywhere. The enemy takes (x+1,y) and (x,y+1) but not (x+1,y+1). The enclave's border cluster is now pinched, so the whole enclave is never handed over, though before this PR it was handed over by CLUSTER_SURROUNDED → removeCluster. The same applies to a whole player made up of one surrounded territory. Fewer annexations would also explain the snapshot change from aliveNations: 41 to 42.
Suggested fix: keep the pinch handling as an extra pass for fallout-severed pieces, not a replacement. Pinched clusters should still go through classifyCluster / surroundedBySamePlayer and removeCluster. The bounded isEnclosed already limits the flood to land that is actually sealed in. Please add a test with a pinched enclave surrounded by one enemy, with no fallout.
2. Low (performance): every territory is flooded on each cluster pass when there are 2+ clusters
To rank clusters by area, the new code runs a 4-way flood over every territory reachable from any border cluster. For a player with more than one border cluster, that's their whole territory, and any lake, enclave or crater adds a cluster. This runs on every removeClusters call (every 20 ticks, or every tick under 100 tiles). Before this PR, the full-territory flood (checkAndAssignTerritory) only ran when one cluster's bounding box contained the largest cluster's. This goes against the PR's stated goal of avoiding traversals over the whole empire.
Suggested fix: compute the area only when it can change the choice, e.g. only when isLargestHole is true or when fallout exists. Or bound the flood the same way isEnclosed is now bounded.
Reuse the area-pass territory IDs in the pinch loop.
When a pinched cluster contains a tile from the component whose size is maxTerritoryArea, the area pass has already flooded that component. The pinch loop starts a newer generation, floods the component again, and copies every tile into componentTiles before discarding it.
This path also runs for ordinary diagonal borders without fallout. The previous severed-land path skipped the work when no fallout existed. The old path did scan the main body once per candidate, so the exact net cost depends on the map. The new neighbor-walking flood and componentTiles allocation can still add material CPU and allocation cost during the periodic recalculation.
Store the area-pass territory ID for each cluster tile. Skip pinch starts whose stored area is maxTerritoryArea. Cache hasDiagonalPinch(cluster) once per cluster and reuse the result.

Verdict: one fix needed. 1 medium-severity finding.
The new commit fixes the earlier high-severity finding: pinched clusters go through classifyCluster / surroundedBySamePlayer / removeCluster again, and there's a test for a checkerboard-pinched enclave with no fallout. The territory-area flood is also skipped now when there's no nested bounding box, no pinch and no fallout. The generation bookkeeping in the new area floods (bumpGenerations(16), clusters.length * 4 + 16) looks safe: state.gen is bumped up to each tGen before it's stamped.
packages/engine/src/execution/PlayerExecution.ts
1. Medium: removeCluster now conquers every 4-way component of a pinched cluster, but checks only one of them is sealed in
The final floodFillWithGen now starts from all of cluster instead of [firstTile].
Pinched clusters now reach removeCluster: the single-cluster case, the largest cluster (its pinch guard is gone), and pinched secondary clusters.
A pinched cluster's border tiles belong to two or more 4-way components that touch only at a corner. isEnclosed(firstTile, …) walks only the component that holds cluster[0]. The flood then conquers every component the cluster touches.
surroundedBySamePlayer doesn't close that gap. It only checks this cluster's own border tiles, not the inside of the other components. Lake shores or clean unclaimed land inside them form a separate border cluster that is never looked at here.
Example: a defender has two blobs, A and B, touching only at a corner and both surrounded by one enemy. B contains a lake or a patch of clean unclaimed land.
If cluster[0] is in A, isEnclosed passes and B is annexed along with A, even though B has a way out.
If cluster[0] is in B, nothing is annexed.
So the result depends on tile order, and it breaks the invariant stated just above: "Verify the land actually changing hands is sealed in". Before this commit, the pinch pass only annexed components that each passed their own isEnclosed.
Suggested fix: in removeCluster, handle each 4-way component on its own. Walk the cluster tiles; for each tile not yet covered, run isEnclosed from it with the cluster's bounding box, and flood and conquer only that component if it passes. Or require every component to pass before conquering any. Another option is to go back to [firstTile] and let evaluatePinchCandidates handle the other components. A test with two diagonally joined blobs, one of them holding a lake, would cover this.

[Low / perf] L1445: isEnclosed runs again for every cluster tile of a component that isn't enclosed
When isEnclosed(t, …) returns false, the loop hits continue before floodFillWithGen runs, so none of that component's tiles are marked floodGen. isEnclosed marks the tiles it walks with its own generation (bumpTraversalGeneration), not floodGen. So each later cluster tile in the same unsealed component passes the visited[t] === floodGen check and starts another bounded walk. Before this change there was one walk per call. Now an unsealed component with k border tiles gets k walks. That's the common case: a cluster wrapped around an enemy enclave inside a large open empire. Every walk is fence-bounded, so the cost is O(k × walk) and nothing grows without limit. Still, this is the hot path the PR description benchmarks.
Suggested fix: when isEnclosed fails, mark that component as handled. One way: run the same floodFillWithGen(floodGen, visited, [t], false, owned) without conquering. Since the walk is fence-bounded, a cheaper option is to mark only the cluster tiles that the failed walk reached (visited[c] === enclosedGen) as floodGen. To do that, have isEnclosed return or expose its generation.

Reviewed incremental range 78b5fc2..227726b (pinch flag passed into removeCluster, unpinched fast path, and skipping repeat isEnclosed walks).
Verdict: No issues found. Checked for bugs and CLAUDE.md compliance. Findings: 0 high · 0 medium · 0 low
Notes:
The new commit fixes the earlier low-severity performance finding. When isEnclosed fails, the cluster tiles it reached (visited === state.gen, which is the generation isEnclosed just bumped) are re-stamped with floodGen. isEnclosed walks only our own tiles, so those tiles are all in the same unsealed 4-way component, and skipping them is safe. Tiles the early-exiting walk never reached still get their own walk, which costs time but gives the right result.
Every caller passes the right pinch flag: the single cluster passes its precomputed isPinched, the largest cluster passes isPinched[largestIndex], the pinched secondary branch passes true, and the unpinched secondary branch passes false. With no pinch, the fast path does what the code did before d74c03c (one isEnclosed, then a flood from [firstTile]), and pinched clusters still check each component on its own.
Reviewed incremental range 227726b..17a7ec0: the new markRejectedComponent replaces the re-stamping of tiles reached by a failed isEnclosed walk in the pinched branch of removeCluster.
Verdict: No issues found. Checked for bugs and CLAUDE.md compliance. Findings: 0 high · 0 medium · 0 low
Notes:
The change is safe. markRejectedComponent walks only our own tiles, 4-way, from the rejected seed t, so every tile it stamps with floodGen is in the same 4-way component as t. isEnclosed walks that whole component (with no fence limit until a tile outside the fence is popped), so its answer is the same from any seed in the component. Skipping the stamped cluster tiles never skips a component that is actually sealed, and a later floodFillWithGen(floodGen, …) on a sealed component can't reach the stamped tiles, because they aren't 4-connected to it.
The walk stops at [minX-1, maxX+1] × [minY-1, maxY+1], the same fence isEnclosed uses, so it costs at most the bounding box and never floods the open empire. A cluster tile that joins t's component only through a path outside the fence is left unstamped. It then gets its own walk, which fails the same way: that costs time, but the result is still right.
Stale container cluster makes isHoleCluster return true for the wrong reason.
The new early return in checkAndAssignTerritory leaves clusterTerritoryIds[startIdx] at 0. The caller then compares clusterTerritoryIdsRef.ids[i] === clusterTerritoryIdsRef.ids[j] at Line 704. If both ids are 0, the check is true, and isHoleCluster reports a hole.
Before this change, startIdx always received a non-zero id, so this state could not occur.
The state is reachable in the pinch pass (Line 530). Pass 1 or an earlier evaluatePinchCandidates call can capture clusters[j][0]. That makes the container cluster stale. Cluster i has no id yet, so both ids are 0. The pinch pass then skips cluster i as a "hole", and pinched enclaves in it are not evaluated.
Treat an unassigned id as "not a hole" in isHoleCluster.
Proposed fix (Line 704)

Verdict: No correctness issues found. One low-severity cleanup note. Findings: 0 high · 0 medium · 1 low
The switch from 0 to -1 as the "unassigned" sentinel is applied the same way everywhere: the fill(-1) init, checkAndAssignTerritory's guards and startIdx, and the !== -1 check in isHoleCluster. Territory IDs still start at 1, so nothing else changes. The new fallout requirement only narrows the pinch pass. Pinched components without fallout still go through removeCluster / surroundedBySamePlayer as before.

[Low / dead code] isHoleCluster, "Topological Sovereign Guard": the doughnut fallback for the largest cluster can never run
// Topological Sovereign Guard: The sovereign main body can NEVER be
// an interior hole of a cluster with smaller or equal territory area!
if(
clusterSizes&&
largestIndex!==undefined&&
i===largestIndex&&
clusterSizes[j]<=clusterSizes[largestIndex]
){
continue;
}
constjIdx=j*4;
The guard skips every j with clusterSizes[j] <= clusterSizes[largestIndex] when i === largestIndex. That covers every j in both paths:
Area-ranked path: largestIndex is the argmax of clusterSizes, so no cluster is larger.
Fast path (no inscribed box, pinch or fallout): clusterSizes stays all zeros, so 0 <= 0 for every j.
So isHoleCluster(largestIndex, …) always returns false, and the bestIndex / bestArea / bestLength re-selection block after it (around L398–L425) is unreachable. Nothing breaks, because the area ranking plus the bbox-area tiebreak already rule out the hole case. But the code reads as if there's a working fallback when there isn't one.
Suggested fix: either delete the isHoleCluster(largestIndex, …) branch and the new clusterSizes / largestIndex parameters, or keep the fallback reachable and drop the guard. If you keep it, a short comment noting that the area ranking already makes it redundant would help.
On this path largestIndex points to the cluster with the largest clusterSizes value. Every other cluster j therefore has clusterSizes[j] <= clusterSizes[largestIndex]. The new guard at Lines 708-717 skips every j when i === largestIndex. This means isHoleCluster(largestIndex, ...) always returns false. The if body at Lines 398-427 cannot run.
The fast path behaves the same way. There clusterSizes is all zeros, and no box is nested, so the result is also false.
Remove the block. Keep isHoleCluster for the pinch pass. Or, if you want the replacement logic, change the guard so it can fire. Dead code that looks active confuses later readers.

Reviewed incremental range e924351..85c6dcc: the largest-cluster doughnut fallback and the sovereign guard are gone, the territory-ID setup in isHoleCluster moved into initClusterTerritories, pinched secondary clusters now go through the same removeCluster call as unpinched ones, removeCluster picks a captor for each component, and there's a new test and an updated snapshot.
Verdict: No issues found. Checked for bugs and CLAUDE.md compliance. Findings: 0 high · 0 medium · 0 low
Notes:
Removing the isHoleCluster(largestIndex, …) re-selection block doesn't change behaviour. As the last review noted, the guard made it impossible to reach, so this resolves that low-severity finding.
initClusterTerritories does what the old inline setup did: it fills with -1 and stamps clusterIndexMap with c + 1. It still runs at most once per pass, because clusterTerritoryIdsRef.ids is set before it returns.
Pinched secondary clusters no longer need surroundedBySamePlayer (one non-friendly owner on every side). They now go through removeCluster with knownCaptor undefined, exactly like unpinched CLUSTER_SURROUNDED clusters. That matches what main does for any surrounded secondary cluster, and the new two-enemy test covers it. getCapturingPlayer skips friendly neighbours, so allies still can't take the land.
When the captor is null, the pinched path just continues. The component has already been stamped with floodGen by floodFillWithGen, so no walk repeats. The single-cluster and largest-cluster paths still pass a resolved captor, so their behaviour is the same as before.

- Resolve captor per 4-way sub-component in removeCluster to support multi-enemy pinched enclaves without leaking ownership across diagonal boundaries
- Remove unreachable doughnut fallback for largestIndex and prune unused parameters in isHoleCluster
- Add unit test for multi-enemy pinched enclaves and update NationGoldPerMinute benchmark snapshot

// Sovereign invariant ranking: determine the primary territory by measuring the
// largest contiguous 4-way territory area reachable from each border cluster,
When there is no nested bounding box, no pinch and no fallout, largestIndex goes to the cluster with the largest bounding box, with border length only breaking ties. Territory size is never measured here. Only the else branch does what the comment just below it (and the PR description) describes: rank by 4-way territory area, with bbox area as the tiebreak. This fast path is the common case.
The choice matters because the main body and the other clusters are removed under different rules:
The cluster at largestIndex can only be taken through surroundedBySamePlayer, which needs a single enemy on every side.
Every other cluster goes through classifyCluster. That returns CLUSTER_SURROUNDED whenever the bbox of the enemy neighbours covers the bbox of the cluster and there is no open land or shore, no matter how many enemies there are. The unpinched removeCluster path then needs only isEnclosed within the bbox fence of that cluster, and hands the whole territory to getCapturingPlayer.
Example (no fallout, no pinch):
Player P has a compact landlocked core, a 50×50 block. It has about 196 border tiles, a bbox area of 2,500, and is bordered only by enemies A and B.
P also has a separate territory elsewhere: a coastal staircase strip, 2 tiles per step and 60 steps long. That is about 120 tiles, all of them border, with a 61×61 bbox (area 3,721). The steps are joined side by side, so hasDiagonalPinch is false. Neither bbox contains the other, so the fast path runs.
With this PR, the strip becomes largestIndex (3,721 > 2,500). The core is classified CLUSTER_SURROUNDED, isEnclosed succeeds (it is landlocked and enemies act as walls), and all 2,500 tiles go to A or B in one pass. P keeps only the strip.
On main, the core has the longer border (196 > 120), so it is the main body. With two enemies, surroundedBySamePlayer fails and the core is kept.
This is the same kind of false inland annexation the PR sets out to fix, and it is a regression from main for this shape. A long thin arm or a diagonal coastal band easily has a larger bbox than a compact body that holds far more tiles.
Suggested fix: rank by territory area in every branch, and use bbox area only as a tiebreak. Some ways to keep the fast path cheap:
Keep it only for clusters that all belong to the same territory, and fall back to the area flood otherwise.
Accept a cluster as the main body as soon as its 4-way flood reaches more than numTilesOwned() / 2 tiles. Only one territory can do that, so the flood can stop there.
Keep border length (as on main) as the fast-path key.
A test would cover this: two disjoint territories, where the smaller one has the larger bbox and the larger one is landlocked and bordered by two enemies. The larger one should not be annexed.
Also checked, nothing found: CLAUDE.md compliance (determinism, no forbidden Math calls, no layer imports, tests included), generation-counter handling in the area and pinch floods, isEnclosed fence bounds at the map edge, and captor selection (knownCaptor and getCapturingPlayer never pick a friendly player).
This commit removes the shortcut that ranked clusters by bounding box when there was no nested box, pinch or fallout. Now the main body is always the cluster that borders the largest 4-way territory. That fixes a real flaw: in the shortcut, a long thin arm with a big bounding box could outrank a compact core. The flood code is the same as the old slow path, just no longer behind the if. territoryAreas and clusterTileTIds are now always set, so the later clusterTileTIds?.[i] / if (tileTIds && territoryAreas) checks still type-check and behave the same.
test("a compact landlocked core is not annexed when a secondary strip has a larger bounding box",()=>{
constcore=rect(10,10,59,59);
conststrip=(x: number,y: number)=>{
if(x<100||x>160||y<100||y>160)returnfalse;
conststep=Math.floor((x-100)/2);
returny===100+step*2||y===100+step*2+1;
};
paint(union(core,strip));
for(letx=9;x<=60;x++){
for(lety=9;y<=60;y++){
if(core(x,y))continue;
if(y<=35)attacker.conquer(game.ref(x,y));
elsethird.conquer(game.ref(x,y));
}
}
startClusterChecks();
runClusterChecks();
expect(defenderTilesIn(core)).toBeGreaterThan(0);
});
The strip is a diagonal chain of 2×2 blocks that touch only at corners. hasDiagonalPinch flags it (for example, (101,101) and (102,102) are ours, while (102,101) and (101,102) aren't). So before this commit hasPinch was already true, and the code took the area-ranking path, not the bounding-box shortcut this commit removes.
The core is surrounded by two players (attacker for y <= 35, third for the rest). So surroundedBySamePlayer returns null for its cluster, and the core can't be annexed whichever cluster ranks largest.
Suggested fix: use a strip with no corner-only joins, such as a 1-tile-wide L or staircase where each step shares an edge. Surround the core with a single enemy, so that ranking the strip first would actually annex the core. Check that the test fails on 6d58833.

2. Low (performance): the whole-territory area flood now runs on every pass with 2+ clusters again
With the shortcut gone, every removeClusters call for a player with more than one border cluster (any lake, enclave or crater adds one) floods all of their territory. That runs every 20 ticks, or every tick for players under 100 tiles. An earlier review flagged this, and the previous commit had fixed it. The correctness gain is worth it, but this goes against the PR's "no traversals over the whole empire" goal.
Suggested fix (optional): keep a cheap shortcut that can't pick the wrong cluster. For example, skip the flood when one cluster has more border tiles than all the others combined and its box contains theirs. Or stop flooding once a territory's size passes numTilesOwned() / 2, since that territory must be the largest.
Make the holed blob reach isEnclosed in this test.
In the current fixture, blobB has 40 tiles and is the largest defender component. evaluatePinchCandidates skips it before isEnclosed runs. The assertion that blobB survives therefore passes without checking the enclosure rule. A regression in isEnclosed for blobB would not change this test's result.
Do not make blobA the largest component. The same area guard would then skip blobA, and its expected annexation would fail. Instead, add a third defender component larger than 40 tiles. It must share the border cluster with the two blobs, touching them only at diagonal corners, so that it sets maxTerritoryArea without merging into either blob. Keep blobA at 36 tiles so the pinch pass still evaluates it.
Add a spy that records the start tile of each isEnclosed call and assert that one call starts inside blobB. Add this with the fixture change. With the current fixture, the new assertion fails.

Notes:
PlayerExecution.ts: this range only adds comments. It explains why the area ranking does not stop early at more than half the tiles, and why hole clusters are not split into separate 4-way components. No code changes.
NukeSeveredAnnexation.test.ts: the diagonal-blob test now paints mainBody too, and moves the blobs, the pocket and the crater by +100 in x. They still line up with each other: the pocket is inside Blob B, and the crater touches Blob A east edge and sits above Blob B. The compact-core test now uses a solid L-shape with no pinches and a single surrounding enemy. That makes it stricter: the core can no longer survive just because it borders two different players, so only the main-body choice protects it. The attacker-fill loop repeats what paint already does, but it does no harm.
