Each release now posts one Slack message. The result notices reply in its thread, using the ts output of the start post.

  • Failure notices are also broadcast to the channel (reply_broadcast). Success stays in the thread and adds a ✅ reaction to the start notice. This needs the reactions:write scope on the Slack app; the step is non-fatal until it is granted.
  • If the start notice never posted, thread_ts renders as YAML null. The Slack client drops null fields, so notices post to the channel as before. An empty string would be sent as-is, which is why null is used.
  • thread_ts is quoted so YAML keeps the timestamp a string rather than a float.
  • Notices that can only fire before the start notice exists (failed checks or tests, and one-message paths) are unchanged.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Notifications
    • Release successes are posted in the Slack thread started by the release notice, with a ✅ reaction added to that notice when a timestamp is available. Failures are posted in the thread and broadcast to the channel. Without a start timestamp, release updates are posted without threading. Prerelease notices remain single channel messages.
  • Documentation
    • Updated release workflow documentation to describe threaded release updates, channel-broadcast failures, and the success reaction.

Result notices reply in the start notice thread via its ts. Failures
are also broadcast to the channel. If the start post never happened,
thread_ts is null and notices post to the channel as before.

Walkthrough

The release workflow exposes the Slack start-notice timestamp to the notify job. Release success and failure notices use that timestamp when available. Failures are broadcast, while successful releases add a check-mark reaction to the start notice. The release documentation describes these notification behaviors.

Changes: Release Slack notifications

Layer / File(s) Summary
Capture and use the start-notice timestamp
.github/workflows/publish.yml, RELEASING.md
The publish job exposes the start-notice timestamp as slack-ts. The notify job uses it for release success and failure notices when available. Failures are broadcast; successful releases add a check-mark reaction to the start notice. Without a timestamp, release notices are not threaded. The documentation describes these behaviors.

Systems and components

  • observed — RELEASING.md (service) was modified; 1 changed file maps to changed impact.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in RELEASING.md: The “Record” description now specifies where publish results and failures are posted and that success adds a ✅ to the start notice; the previous description only listed Slack start, success, and failure notices.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/workflows/publish.yml: The release publish job adds the start Slack notification’s timestamp as a slack-ts output for downstream jobs.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/workflows/publish.yml: The release-start Slack step gains the slack-start ID, which supplies the timestamp exposed by the publish job.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/workflows/publish.yml: The notify job defines THREAD_TS from the publish job output, quoting a present timestamp for YAML parsing and using null when no start timestamp is available.

Comment thread RELEASING.md Resolved
Success replies stay in the thread, so a reaction marks the
top-level message too. It needs the reactions:write scope on the Slack
app. The step is non-fatal until that scope is granted.
