Each stable release is recorded in the team's Linear release pipeline, and the Slack "published" notice links it. Pre-releases are skipped.

  • PRs: GitHub's commit-to-PR lookup for the commits since the previous release, counting PRs merged into main, so rebase merges count. Linear attaches the issues linked to those PRs.
  • Notes: the GitHub release text. Every #N is written out as a full link to this repo, because Linear matches a bare #N against every repo it knows.
  • Non-fatal: a failure doesn't touch the release, and the Slack notice says recording failed.

The script, .github/scripts/record-linear-release.cjs, is checked with unit tests and with dry runs against this repo's releases.

To switch it on:

  1. LINEAR_ACCESS_KEY is already set. This replaces the commented-out job.
  2. Set the LINEAR_RELEASE_MODE variable to live. Until then the job only logs what it would send.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Stable releases can be recorded in Linear with merged pull requests, release notes, and links to repository pull requests. Slack success notices include a link to the Linear release when available, or indicate if recording failed.
    • Linear release recording remains in log-only mode unless live mode is configured.
  • Documentation
    • Updated release guidance to explain Linear release records, configuration requirements, and Slack notifications.

Each stable release syncs to Linear with the PRs merged since the previous
one, found through GitHub so rebase merges count, and the GitHub release
text as notes, its #N references linked to this repo. Log-only until
LINEAR_RELEASE_MODE is live.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

A new script builds and records stable releases in Linear using GitHub release data and merged pull requests. The publish workflow invokes the script and can include the Linear release URL in the Slack success notice.

Changes: Linear release recording

Layer / File(s) Summary
Release range and PR notes
.github/scripts/record-linear-release.cjs
The script selects merged PRs since an earlier eligible release. It formats PR notes and links GitHub references while preserving code, existing links, and URLs.
Build and record the Linear release
.github/scripts/record-linear-release.cjs
The script builds release input from release metadata, PRs, notes, and links. It logs the proposed input outside live mode. In live mode, it submits the mutation and sets the release-url output.
Publish workflow and release notice
.github/workflows/publish.yml, RELEASING.md
The workflow runs the script for non-prerelease releases and passes its URL and outcome to the notification job. The Slack success notice includes the Linear URL when available, or a warning if recording failed. The documentation describes the recording configuration.

Merge Risk: Low · up to d151a

Linear notes may incorrectly link code, and an off-main release may cause a later release to omit PR links. The impact is limited to release recording.

Systems and components

  • observed — RELEASING.md (service) was modified; 1 changed file maps to changed impact.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in RELEASING.md: The workflow steps now include Linear recording for stable releases, covering merged PRs, release notes, linked #N references, and a link to the record in the Slack success notice.
  • observed — Modified behavior in RELEASING.md: The LINEAR_ACCESS_KEY prerequisite now describes recording stable releases with their PRs and GitHub release text, and says recording is log-only until LINEAR_RELEASE_MODE is live; it replaces the statement that the job is commented out.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/workflows/publish.yml: The notification job now also waits for linear-release to finish; its existing !cancelled() condition remains.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/workflows/publish.yml: The successful-release notification step now receives the Linear release URL through RELEASE_URL.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "ci(release): record stable releases in Linear" matches the main change. The PR adds a release helper script that records stable releases in Linear, and it updates the publish workflow and RELEASING.md to match. The title names the primary change and the scope (stable releases only). It omits the Slack link and log-only mode, which is acceptable for a short title.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 1 files.

A hung Linear or GitHub call would otherwise hold the job, and the Slack
notice that waits for it, until the 6-hour job limit. Linear calls also
give up after 30 seconds.
- Leave #N inside fenced code alone.
- A new tag on an already released commit gets no PRs.
- Fail in live mode without an access key, and when Linear reports a
  failed sync.
- Warn in Slack when the job fails before the step runs.

- A code fence closes only on a line of its own, with the same character
and at least as many; one that never closes runs to the end.
- A re-run of an older version only looks at releases before it.
- JSDoc on the script's functions.
- Fences inside block quotes count, and end with their quote.
- Inline code with longer backtick runs (``like this``) is left alone.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Match the opening fence’s quote depth before closing it.

If an unquoted fenced code block contains a line starting > ````, splitFencesremoves>and treats that line as the closing fence. A later#42in the code block is then rewritten as a PR link in the Linear notes. Requiredepth === fence.depth` in the closing-fence check so the quoted line remains code. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
