Fixes and Closes #10474.

This PR restores the ability to reopen the Scratch Pad after it has been closed, without having to use Reset Layout and lose custom panel arrangements.

The issue happened during the migration from wcDocker to rc-dock. The old docking menu had an Add Panel → Scratch Pad option, but this was lost when the custom context menu was introduced.

Changes

  • Added logic to detect where a closed default panel should be restored.
  • Added Add Panel to the tab context menu when a closable default panel is closed.
  • Restored panels are focused and the layout is saved immediately.
  • Updated query_tool.rst to document the new workflow.

Testing

Added regression tests covering panel positioning, grouped panels, and the full close → Add Panel → reopen flow.

3/3 tests passing, ESLint: 0 errors / 0 warnings.

Summary by CodeRabbit

Walkthrough

The layout adds an Add Panel menu for reopening closed default-layout tabs. It places a reopened tab near its default position when possible. The Query Tool documentation explains how to reopen Scratch Pad.

Scratch Pad reopening

Layer / File(s) Summary
Default docking position
web/pgadmin/static/js/helpers/Layout/index.jsx, web/regression/javascript/sqleditor/ScratchPadReopen.spec.js
The layout finds an open sibling or adjacent tab to determine where to dock a default-layout tab. Tests check sibling lookup and expected docking positions.
Add Panel reopening
web/pgadmin/static/js/helpers/Layout/index.jsx, web/pgadmin/tools/sqleditor/static/js/components/QueryToolComponent.jsx, web/regression/javascript/sqleditor/ScratchPadReopen.spec.js, docs/en_US/query_tool.rst
When enabled, the Add Panel submenu lists closed, closable default-layout tabs. Selecting a tab reopens and focuses it, then saves the layout. The Query Tool enables this option. Tests cover reopening, fallback positioning, and already-open tabs. The documentation describes reopening Scratch Pad from a panel tab’s context menu.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified new path is bounded to panels supplied by the default layout and the current layout's docking and settings-save operations; no new privileged sink is identified in that path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The menu filters candidates by default-layout membership, closability, and current open state rather than accepting arbitrary panel data. Server-side authorization for saved settings was not established by the inspected source.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — A separate ToolView listener also deletes saved tool data on its tool's REMOVE event, limiting what can be inferred from the changed Layout cleanup alone. Its coverage of every removal path was not established.

Thanks Hari. Reopening works, the menu skips tabs that are already open, and a saved layout reloads correctly afterwards, but there are two things to sort out before it can go in:

  1. The Scratch Pad doesn't come back where it was. findDefaultDockPosition returns {refTabId: 'id-query', direction: 'right'} (web/pgadmin/static/js/helpers/Layout/index.jsx:427-433), and openTab passes that tab to rc-dock's dockMove. When the target is a tab, rc-dock (4.0.0-alpha.3) goes through addNextToTab, which only understands after-tab and otherwise inserts before the target tab (rc-dock/lib/Algorithm.js, around lines 160-167). So the pad lands as the first tab in the Query/History group, in front of Query, rather than in its own pane on the right; a quick Jest probe gave that panel's tabs as ["id-scratch", "id-query", "id-history"]. The tests only assert what findDefaultDockPosition returns, so they don't catch it. Targeting the panel instead (e.g. this.find(openAdjTabId)?.parent?.id) should get rc-dock to split it properly; please add a test that checks where id-scratch actually ends up.
  2. The menu shows up outside the Query Tool. getTabMenuItems is shared by every Layout, and the main browser's default tabs (Dashboard, Properties, SQL, Statistics, Dependencies, Dependents, Processes) and the workspace Welcome tabs are all closable, so they now get "Add Panel" too. MainMoreToolbar opens its menu through the same code path (LAYOUT_EVENTS.CONTEXT with BROWSER_PANELS.MAIN), so the ⋮ menu would show "Add Panel" alongside the existing "Open" submenu, which does the same job. Could you make it opt-in, say via a prop that only QueryToolComponent sets?

Smaller points: flatCurrent only walks getLayout().dockbox, so a maximised or floating neighbour isn't found and the fallback may drop the pad into the maximised panel (layoutDockerObj.isTabOpen(id) would avoid that); and the useApplicationState() || {} / deleteToolData?.() change at lines 624 and 629 looks unrelated, so could you say why it's needed or drop it?

Manually tested this branch (pulled it, built, ran locally) — the reopen flow works, but I found a couple of user-visible bugs around where/how the panel comes back, plus some test-coverage gaps and minor cleanups. Details below.

🔴 Functional bugs (found in testing)

1. Scratch Pad reopens on the wrong side — it merges into the Query editor's panel instead of returning to its original top-right slot.
findDefaultDockPosition computes the correct target — { refTabId: <Query>, direction: 'right' } — but the reopen then calls:

openTab({ id, content, ...tab.internal }, targetTabId, 'right'); // targetTabId is a TAB id

In rc-dock 4.0.0-alpha.3, side directions (left/right/top/bottom) need a panel/box target; given a tab target they can't split, so the panel gets dropped into the Query panel (same side) rather than docked to the right. This is the same target-type-vs-direction mismatch raised for the after-tab/middle fallback, but it also affects the directional path out of findDefaultDockPosition — which is the path the Scratch Pad actually takes. Suggest resolving the target to the tab's parent panel (e.g. find(refTabId)?.parent) when the direction is a side.

2. The reopened Scratch Pad loses maximizable and its original width.
In the default layout, size: 75 and maximizable: true live on the panel container, not on the tab:

{ size: 75, maximizable: true, tabs: [ getPanel({ id: SCRATCH, closable: true, ... }) ] }

The reopen reconstructs only the tab (openTab({ id, content, ...tab.internal }, ...)), so those container props aren't carried over — the reopened Scratch Pad is no longer maximizable and doesn't return to its original size. Confirmed in testing.

3. (Consequence) The wrong position gets persisted. saveLayout() runs right after the mis-docked reopen, so the bad layout sticks until the user does a full Reset Layout. Fixing #1 resolves this too.

🟡 Test coverage gaps

4. The tests pass while the real placement is wrong. The main reopen test only asserts the panel exists again (isTabOpen('id-scratch') === true) — it never checks where it landed or whether maximizable/size survived. There's also no test for the actual 'right' directional path the Scratch Pad uses; the after-tab/middle tests both mock findDefaultDockPosition and assert only the arguments to openTab, not the resulting layout. A fix should add a test asserting the final docked position, not just "tab is open".

5. The findDefaultDockPosition unit tests give false confidence. They pass a hand-built flatDefault array and expect a specific result, but the implementation ignores flatDefault (it reads this.defaultLayout). Those tests would pass even with a garbage flatDefault — they don't actually validate the input→output they appear to.

🟢 Code cleanups

6. flatDefault is a dead parameter — threaded through findDefaultDockPosition → findSiblingTab but never read. Remove it (also resolves #5).
7. Inconsistent null-guarding on this.defaultLayout: findAdjacentInBox uses this.defaultLayout?.dockbox while findSiblingTab uses this.defaultLayout.dockbox. Pick one.
8. Yet another hand-rolled "flatten the layout tree" in the reopen callback, when the class already has flatten helpers — worth consolidating.
9. Dead branch in the submenu label: tab.internal?.title || (typeof tab.title === 'string' ? tab.title : tab.id) — tab.title is always a <TabTitle> element, so the typeof check is never true. Simplify to tab.internal?.title || tab.id.
10. The change from const { deleteToolData } = useApplicationState() to … = useApplicationState() || {} with deleteToolData?.(panelId) seems unrelated to the feature — could you explain the motivation? It also silently skips deleteToolData if the hook ever returns falsy.

Nits

11. No afterEach restoring the jest.spyOn spies — relies on global jest config; could leak between tests.
12. data-testid="scratch-pad-area" is set on the test textarea but never used.

Happy to help verify a fix — nice work getting the core flow and the menu wiring in place.

Thanks @dpage and @hiteshjambhale for the feedback I will integrate the required changes.

Dock the panel beside its original neighbour (targeting the panel, not
the tab) and keep the panel's size and maximizable props. Make the Add
Panel menu opt-in via allowAddPanel, set only by the Query Tool. Test the
resulting layout rather than only the computed position.
