Context & Motivation

Following the introduction of realistic directional sun-projected shadows (PR #365), airborne unit shadows are projected onto the terrain ~200+ world units away from their physical 2D $(X,Y)$ ground coordinates depending on altitude and sun angle.

In retail C&C: Generals and Zero Hour, aircraft shadows were static vertical 2D decals positioned directly beneath each aircraft. Players historically relied heavily on this vertical shadow as a visual reference to:

  1. Accurately target ground-targeted abilities/General Powers on aircraft (such as Emergency Repair, Leaflet Drop, Daisy Cutter, etc.).
  2. Easily click-select airborne units whose 3D visual geometry and high altitude make selecting the 3D collision mesh unintuitive or easy to miss.

With realistic shadows, players frequently missed ground-targeted powers and struggled to select flying units.

Additionally, custom animated/static game cursors were failing to load on macOS and Linux (falling back to the operating system's standard mouse cursor) due to an asset root propagation regression during the upstream file system merge and platform-specific gating in SDL3Mouse.cpp.

Changes

1. Tactical Air Unit Ground Indicator & Selection Picking

  • Tactical Ground Reticle:
    • Uses the retail extargeteralpha texture asset present in Textures.big and TexturesZH.big (no loose art assets required).
    • Positioned at the exact $(X, Y)$ ground projection directly below the aircraft on the terrain.
    • Exclusive to the local human player's controllable combat/utility aircraft (obj->getControllingPlayer() == ThePlayerList->getLocalPlayer()), excluding automated support planes (e.g. supply cargo planes, B-52 carpet bombers, A-10 airstrikes) and preventing screen clutter from ally or enemy aircraft.
    • Sized cleanly with a 20% reduced footprint for subtle, non-intrusive in-game feedback.
    • Active whenever an aircraft is flying at or above minimum flight altitude ($\ge 15.0\text{ units}$).
    • Smoothly fades in and out between $15.0\text{ units}$ and $50.0\text{ units}$ altitude (WWMath::Clamp((heightAboveGround - MIN_AIR_HEIGHT) / BLEND_AIR_HEIGHT, 0.0f, 1.0f)).
    • Dynamically colored to match the controlling player/team's color (obj->getIndicatorColor()).
    • Adapts opacity for visual clarity: subtle (~30% opacity) during standard flight, prominent (~70% opacity) when the unit is currently selected.
    • Automatically hidden when landed, destroyed, cloaked, or obscured by fog of war / shroud.
  • Ground Indicator Selection Fallback (W3DView::pickDrawable):
    • Clicking directly on the ground reticle selects the corresponding player airborne unit, resolving 3D selection frustration without interfering with ground unit combat.
  • Configuration & Engine Integration:
    • Added AirUnitGroundIndicator boolean option preference in OptionPreferences and GameData.ini (default TRUE), queried via TheGlobalData->isAirUnitGroundIndicator().
    • Updated decal rendering in W3DProjectedShadowManager::renderShadows to ensure ground decals render when the aircraft is visible or within off-screen bounds (isShownOffScreen).
    • Maintained strict 1:1 parity between GeneralsMD (Zero Hour) and Generals base game.

2. Custom Cursor Loading & Platform Fallback Fix

  • Asset Root Propagation (BIGFileSystem.cpp):
    • Restored TheLocalFileSystem->setAssetRootPath(primaryAssetsDirectory) in BIGFileSystem::init() so loose assets like Data/Cursors/*.ani resolve against the game data path when running with split runtime and data directories on Linux/macOS.
  • Environment & Case-Insensitive Fallback (StdLocalFileSystem.cpp):
    • Added fallback asset root resolution from CNC_GENERALS_ZH_PATH / CNC_GENERALS_PATH in StdLocalFileSystem::init() and broadened case-insensitive path resolution from the asset root across all non-Windows platforms (#ifndef _WIN32).
  • Cross-Platform SDL3 Cursor Loading (SDL3Mouse.cpp):
    • Made first-frame hotspot extraction, bounds clamping, and static color cursor fallback (SDL_CreateColorCursor) cross-platform in both Zero Hour and base Generals.
  • Deployment Scripts (deploy-macos-zh.sh, deploy-macos-generals.sh):
    • Added automatic symlinking of Data/Cursors into ${RUNTIME_DIR}/Data/Cursors when present in the asset path.

Validation

  • Verified clean build of Zero Hour (GeneralsXZH) under macos-vulkan.
  • Verified clean build of Generals base game (GeneralsX) under macos-vulkan.
  • Deployed and verified in-game that both custom cursors and the tactical ground indicator work seamlessly together.
  • Verified worklog updated in docs/WORKLOG/2026-10-DIARY.md.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a ground reticle for eligible aircraft, visible above a minimum altitude and fading as aircraft rise. Its opacity reflects selection. The feature is enabled by default and can be controlled through game settings.
    • Aircraft can now be selected by clicking their ground reticle.
  • Improvements
    • Improved cursor loading on non-Windows platforms, including hotspot handling and a static-cursor fallback when animation is unavailable.
    • Improved asset discovery on macOS with case-insensitive path lookup and cursor asset setup for deployments.

…ction picking

- Add C&C3/RA3-style tactical ground projection reticle directly beneath airborne units (KINDOF_AIRCRAFT) at altitude >= 15 units
- Dynamically blend opacity based on aircraft altitude above terrain, unit selection status, and team/player color
- Implement fallback in W3DView::pickDrawable allowing direct selection of airborne units by clicking their ground indicator footprint
- Add AirUnitGroundIndicator setting in OptionPreferences and GameData.ini (default TRUE)
- Ensure 1:1 cross-platform and base game parity across GeneralsMD and Generals
- Update worklog in docs/WORKLOG/2026-10-DIARY.md

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds a configurable aircraft ground indicator and terrain-based picking. It also updates asset-root resolution, cursor loading, and macOS cursor asset deployment.

Changes: Air Unit Ground Indicator

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure the ground indicator
Core/GameEngine/Include/Common/OptionPreferences.h, Core/GameEngine/Source/Common/OptionPreferences.cpp, Generals/Code/GameEngine/..., GeneralsMD/Code/GameEngine/...
Adds the AirUnitGroundIndicator preference and GameData setting in both game variants. The setting defaults to TRUE, and the preference can override it.
Render and manage the indicator
Core/GameEngineDevice/Include/W3DDevice/GameClient/Module/W3DModelDraw.h, Core/GameEngineDevice/Source/W3DDevice/GameClient/Drawable/Draw/W3DModelDraw.cpp, Generals/Code/GameEngineDevice/..., GeneralsMD/Code/GameEngineDevice/..., docs/WORKLOG/2026-10-DIARY.md
Adds an aircraft ground decal with altitude-based opacity, selection opacity, and indicator coloring. Drawable, shroud, render-object, and option state control its visibility. The decal is released with its render resources. Both game variants update standalone decal queuing. The worklog describes the feature and its rules.
Pick aircraft through the indicator
Core/GameEngineDevice/Source/W3DDevice/GameClient/W3DView.cpp
When drawable raycasting finds no target, terrain picking can return the nearest eligible aircraft whose ground position falls within the candidate radius.

Cross-Platform Cursor Assets

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve platform asset roots
Core/GameEngine/Source/Common/System/BIGFileSystem.cpp, Core/GameEngineDevice/Source/StdDevice/Common/StdLocalFileSystem.cpp
Sets the local asset root from the resolved primary asset directory, including an empty path when the working directory is selected. Enables case-insensitive asset-root traversal on non-Windows platforms and initializes fallback paths from the relevant environment variables.
Load and deploy cursor resources
Generals/Code/GameEngineDevice/Source/SDL3Device/GameClient/SDL3Mouse.cpp, GeneralsMD/Code/GameEngineDevice/Source/SDL3Device/GameClient/SDL3Mouse.cpp, scripts/build/macos/deploy-macos-generals.sh, scripts/build/macos/deploy-macos-zh.sh, docs/WORKLOG/2026-10-DIARY.md
Uses first-frame hotspot handling and a static cursor fallback across the changed platform builds. Logs whether the default normal cursor loaded. The macOS deployment scripts link cursor assets from the selected asset directory.

After changing the cursor asset directory, a macOS redeployment may continue using stale or unavailable cursor assets. The impact is limited to cursor resources, so this is a bounded issue to fix before relying on the new assets.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title follows Conventional Commits format with the valid type feat, the scope graphics, and a clear description of the main ground-indicator and selection-picking changes. It does not contain the @ symbol.

Full details: Platform Isolation

Explanation

PASS. The added game-logic code in Core/GameEngine, Generals/Code/GameEngine, and GeneralsMD/Code/GameEngine only adds preference/configuration fields and calls the cross-platform LocalFileSystem::setAssetRootPath() abstraction. The direct platform changes are confined to Core/GameEngineDevice and SDL device implementations. The existing unistd.h, readlink, and related platform code in changed game-logic files is unchanged by this pull request. No new Win32, Cocoa, or raw POSIX API leaks into game logic.

Full details: Cross-Platform Determinism

Explanation

PASS. The pull request adds no simulation trigonometry or power math that bypasses WWMath. The new indicator code uses fixed scalar arithmetic and squared-distance comparison. The only added division uses the nonzero constant BLEND_AIR_GROUND_INDICATOR_HEIGHT; its result is validated with WWMath::Is_Valid_Float, and rawOpacity is validated before the Int cast. The SDL frame-duration division and cast are unchanged existing code.

Full details: Openal / Miniaudio Parity

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes no OpenAL or MiniAudio source, header, build, or configuration files. The authoritative diff contains graphics, preferences, filesystem, cursor, deployment, and documentation changes only. Therefore, no OpenAL audio modification requires a mirrored MiniAudio change.

Full details: Conventional Commit Standards

Explanation

All 10 subjects in the reviewed range use Conventional Commit syntax and contain no '@'. The merge: incorporate custom cursors fix into feat/air-unit-ground-indicator commit has two parents, so it is a standard merge commit and is explicitly allowed.

Full details: No Hardcoded Local Paths / Sensitive Info

Explanation

No hardcoded personal paths, private environment variables, internal URLs, or workspace paths were introduced. The added macOS fallback uses the standard ${HOME} variable (deploy-macos-generals.sh:122-131, deploy-macos-zh.sh:172-181). Other paths use runtime variables such as CNC_GENERALS_PATH, CNC_GENERALS_ZH_PATH, PROJECT_ROOT, RUNTIME_DIR, and SCRIPT_DIR. Added-line inspection found no /Users/..., /home/..., drive-letter paths, credentials, or URLs.

Full details: Ngmp Protocol Integrity

Explanation

NGMP protocol integrity is preserved. The reviewed range changes only graphics, preferences, filesystem/cursor handling, deployment scripts, and documentation. No files under GeneralsOnline, NextGenMP, or cmake/ngmp.cmake changed. NGMP UI entry points, loading-screen ticking, NextGenTransport, and MainMenu files are also unchanged. The diff adds no GameSpy replacement, Win32 networking API, WebSocket routing, REST, heartbeat, or thread-safety changes.

Remove the redundant indicator state update

The indicator block is reachable only when allocateShadows() enters the template-shadow allocation path and m_shadow remains null. However, updateAirGroundIndicator() creates and updates m_airGroundIndicator independently during drawing. It already applies hidden and shroud state on every draw, so this block does not provide unique behavior.

Suggested fix

- if (m_airGroundIndicator)
-		{	m_airGroundIndicator->enableShadowInvisible(m_fullyObscuredByShroud);
-			if (m_renderObject->Is_Hidden() || !m_shadowEnabled)
-				m_airGroundIndicator->enableShadowRender(FALSE);

Propagate the resolved primary asset directory to TheLocalFileSystem in BIGFileSystem::init so loose files such as Data/Cursors/*.ani can be resolved when runtime cwd differs from the asset root.

Make ANI cursor loading, first-frame hotspot extraction, bounds clamping, and static color cursor fallback cross-platform in SDL3Mouse for both Zero Hour and base Generals. Symlink Data/Cursors during macOS deployment and add diagnostic logging for asset fallback and cursor initialization.

Core/GameEngineDevice/Source/W3DDevice/GameClient/W3DView.cpp:2605-2636
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Align the no-shadow fallback used by rendering and picking.

W3DModelDraw::updateAirGroundIndicator() sizes the decal from sphere.Radius * 1.5f when both template shadow dimensions are unset. W3DView::pickDrawable() instead uses a fixed 50.0f fallback. After the shared 0.80f scale, the picker always tests a 40-unit footprint, while the decal footprint is max(1.2 * sphere.Radius, 20.0f). An eligible aircraft with a bounding-sphere radius above or below the matching threshold can therefore have clicks rejected inside its visible decal or accepted outside it.

Use one shared fallback-size calculation for both paths. The existing selection fallback contract requires clicks within the indicator terrain footprint to select the aircraft.

Add W3DModelDraw::calculateAirGroundIndicatorSize() to share indicator footprint calculation across updateAirGroundIndicator() and W3DView::pickDrawable().
Use W3DModelDraw::DEFAULT_AIR_GROUND_INDICATOR_SIZE (50.0f) as fallback when template shadow dimensions are unset, eliminating disparity between visual decal and click picking.

🟡 Minor · Start the base-game process from its runtime directory. · deploy-macos-generals.sh:153-171

scripts/build/macos/deploy-macos-generals.sh:153-171
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Start the base-game process from its runtime directory.

When run.sh starts outside SCRIPT_DIR, a working directory containing .big files can become the primary asset root. This clears the filesystem fallback, while Data/Cursors remains symlinked under SCRIPT_DIR. Non-Windows lookup then checks only the working directory and misses the custom cursor files.

🟡 Minor · Refresh the cursor link on every deployment. · deploy-macos-generals.sh:128-132

scripts/build/macos/deploy-macos-generals.sh:128-132
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Refresh the cursor link on every deployment.

Both macOS deployment scripts skip ln -sfn when Data/Cursors already exists. A redeployment with a different valid asset root can therefore leave the runtime link pointing to the previous root, so the launcher can load stale or unavailable cursor assets. Preserve unrelated user-managed files, but replace this deployment-owned symlink when it exists.

Suggested fix
- if [[ ! -e "${RUNTIME_DIR}/Data/Cursors" ]]; then
- mkdir -p "${RUNTIME_DIR}/Data"
- ln -sfn "${GEN_ASSET_DIR}/Data/Cursors" "${RUNTIME_DIR}/Data/Cursors"
- echo " Symlinked Data/Cursors from ${GEN_ASSET_DIR}/Data/Cursors"

+ ln -sfn "${GEN_ASSET_DIR}/Data/Cursors" "${RUNTIME_DIR}/Data/Cursors"
+ echo " Symlinked Data/Cursors from ${GEN_ASSET_DIR}/Data/Cursors"

Apply the same correction in scripts/build/macos/deploy-macos-zh.sh, using ZH_ASSET_DIR.

Update cursor symlink creation in deploy-macos-generals.sh and deploy-macos-zh.sh to refresh existing symlinks (-L) or create if not exists (! -e).
Preserves user-managed directories while guaranteeing redeployment updates symlinks when asset roots change.
