Overview

Lets ev-node submit blobs through DA endpoints that cannot sign, such as da-proxy. With da.tx_signer.enabled, the node signs each PayForBlobs with a key from a local cosmos keyring and broadcasts it over Celestia consensus gRPC. Reads still go through celestia-node JSON-RPC at da.address. Off by default.

  • block.WithSubmitter injects a BlobSubmitter into the DA client. Existing callers are unaffected and the root module gains no dependencies.
  • da/celestia implements it on celestia-app's pkg/user TxClient, with no celestia-node dependency. It is a separate module because celestia-app's replace directives do not propagate. Only testapp and evm import it, for aggregator and promotable nodes.
  • Startup fails if the key is missing, its account is not on chain, or da.submit_options sets signer_address.

The DA client's status mapping now also matches the errors celestia-app v10 returns ("too large", "size exceeds maximum allowed limit", "eviction poll timeout"). Previously these mapped to StatusError, so batch halving and not-included retries never kicked in. This also affects the default JSON-RPC path.

Testing

Unit tests, plus docker e2e TestDockerSuite/TestSignedBlobSubmission against celestia-app v10.4.0 and celestia-node v0.34.3, which checks that blobs are included and paid for by ev-node's key. Not covered: a TLS gRPC endpoint.

da/celestia and the apps use replace github.com/evstack/ev-node => ../.. until root is tagged.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added optional local signing and broadcasting of Celestia blob submissions over gRPC. When enabled, nodes can submit through DA endpoints that do not support signing; the feature is off by default.
    • Added signer configuration for gRPC access, keyring, and passphrase, with startup validation. Reads continue through the configured DA endpoint.
  • Documentation
    • Added setup guidance for signed Celestia submissions and reference information for the new configuration options.

Add a BlobSubmitter seam to the DA client so blob submission can be routed
somewhere other than celestia-node's JSON-RPC blob.Submit, e.g. to sign
PayForBlobs locally. Reads keep using the JSON-RPC client.

- da.Config.Submitter; nil keeps the existing blob.Submit path.
- block.WithSubmitter and a variadic NewDAClient(..., opts ...DAClientOption),
  so existing callers compile unchanged.
- pkg/cmd.StartNode accepts DA client options for apps that cannot be
  imported by the root module.

The error-to-status mapping applies to both paths.
Configuration for signing PayForBlobs locally and broadcasting them over
consensus gRPC (grpc_address, grpc_auth_token, grpc_tls, network, keyring
dir/backend/key, worker_accounts, passphrase_file). Config only; it adds no
dependencies to the root module and is disabled by default.

When enabled, validation requires grpc_address, network and key_name,
restricts keyring_backend to file or test, and rejects da.signing_addresses
(which would inject a signer_address the local signer does not use).
grpc_auth_token falls back to da.auth_token since one da-proxy token covers
both endpoints.
…r_accounts

The chain-id comes from the consensus gRPC endpoint, so network is not
needed. Parallel worker accounts write new keys into the operator keyring
and move funds at startup, and ev-node submits sequentially anyway.
celestia-app v10 reports oversized blobs as "too large" and a dropped
transaction as "eviction poll timeout". Neither matched the sentinels
the status switch looked for, so both ended up as StatusError.
…client

Adds a block.BlobSubmitter that signs PayForBlobs from a local keyring
and broadcasts them over consensus gRPC with x-token auth, for DA
endpoints that cannot sign such as da-proxy. Built on celestia-app
pkg/user only; no celestia-node dependency.

The replace to ../.. is temporary until root is tagged.
The submitter is built only for aggregator and promotable nodes.
Runs celestia-app v10.4.0 and celestia-node v0.34.3, funds a test
keyring key, starts testapp with tx_signer and asserts blobs are
included and the signer paid fees.
celestia-app rejects txs over its max size with "transaction size
exceeds maximum allowed limit", which matched no sentinel, so batch
halving never engaged.
…startup

SetupTxClient starts a queue worker that runs until its context is
cancelled, so Close now cancels it. ConfigFromNode rejects signer_address
in da.submit_options, reads the passphrase only for the file backend,
and resolves an empty keyring_dir to the node home.
A failed query returned zero, so the fee assertion passed vacuously.

The new opt-in signing feature has three gaps. A follower node running force inclusion can submit blobs without the signer. A gRPC endpoint that never responds can hang node startup indefinitely. Setting only a maximum gas price can cause transactions to use an underestimated fixed gas limit. These should be fixed before merge, though the feature is disabled by default.

Enable signing for force-inclusion submissions.

The --force-inclusion-server flag enables the server without a node-role check. When signing is enabled on a node that is neither an aggregator nor promotable, the signer is not added to the DA client. The server stores that client, and eth_sendRawTransaction calls daClient.Submit. Such requests can fail against DA endpoints that require signed submissions.

Include force-inclusion servers in the signer condition, or reject this configuration during startup.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Bound startup gRPC queries.

If the endpoint accepts a connection but does not answer QueryAccount, New waits on the node's long-lived command context. grpc.NewClient does not establish the connection, and gRPC supplies no default RPC deadline. Add deadlines to the startup queries and to the queries inside SetupTxClient. Keep the transaction worker's lifetime context separate from any short-lived setup deadline. Otherwise, a stalled endpoint can prevent node startup until the process is cancelled. (grpc.io)

Do not turn a price-only option into a fixed gas limit.

If max_gas_price is set while Gas is unset, this branch sets DefaultEstimateGas and passes it to SetGasLimitAndGasPrice. That replaces the transaction client's dynamic gas estimation with a fixed approximate estimate. Preserve dynamic gas estimation when Gas is unset while still applying the requested price cap. Validate the resulting gas limit against a simulated transaction on each supported network.
