fix(pruner): prune state snapshots in all mode and stop pruning from falling behind - #3469
Conversation
…falling behind - Pruning mode "all" deleted block data but never the per-height state snapshots (/s/<height>), so state grew without bound. Block pruning now also prunes states, keeping the state at the last pruned height so the oldest retained block can still be replayed. - Add Store.PruneStates, which deletes states and records LastPrunedStateHeightKey in a single batch (mirrors PruneBlocks), instead of one write per height. - Metadata mode no longer jumps its state marker to the last pruned block height, which skipped states that were never deleted. - Metadata mode keeps the state for the oldest retained block (previously it deleted it, leaving keep_recent-1 replayable blocks). - Replace the hard 10k per-tick cap with a budget of 4x blocks per interval (min 10k), executed in store batches of at most 10k heights. With the cap, pruning fell behind permanently whenever more than 10k blocks were produced per interval.

Reject non-positive Node.BlockTime when pruning is enabled.
A zero Node.BlockTime passes full configuration validation and reaches pruner.New. When pruning has eligible work, pruneBudget evaluates p.cfg.Interval.Duration / p.blockTime, which raises a divide-by-zero panic. The pruner runs in a separate goroutine, so the panic terminates the node process.

Overview
pruning_mode: alldeleted block data but never the per-height state snapshots (/s/<height>), so oneStateentry per block accumulated forever. The docs already sayallprunes "blocks and state", so this fixes the code to match.Changes
allmode. AfterPruneBlocks(blocksEnd), the pruner now deletes states up toblocksEnd-1. It keeps the state atblocksEndbecause replaying blockblocksEnd+1needs it (replay.go:GetStateAtHeight(height-1)).Store.PruneStates(ctx, height). This is new and mirrorsPruneBlocks: it deletes states in(lastPrunedState, height]and writesLastPrunedStateHeightKeyin the same batch, so each chunk is atomic. Before, the pruner made oneDeleteStateAtHeightwrite per height and then a separate marker write.pruneMetadataused to move its state marker forward toLastPrunedBlockHeightKey, as if block pruning had already removed those states. A node switching fromalltometadatawould never delete states below the last pruned block. The two markers are now tracked separately.metadatamode. It deleted the state atheight - keep_recent, so the oldest retained block couldn't be replayed. It now keeps that state, matchingallmode.calculateBatchSizereturnedmin(4*blocksPerInterval, 10000). Its comment called this a minimum and gave a 36k example, but the code made it a maximum. Whenever the chain produced more than about 10k blocks per interval (for example 100ms blocks with an interval of 17m or more), pruning fell behind forever. The newpruneBudgetismax(4*blocksPerInterval, 10000).pruneInChunksruns it as store batches of at most 10k heights each, checking context cancellation between chunks.Operational notes
allmode have a state backlog starting at height 1. It drains at the budget rate. For 100ms blocks on a 15m interval that is a net 27k heights per tick. No migration is needed.metadatamode now keeps one more state than before (the boundary state).store.PrunergainsPruneStates.test/mocks/store.gois regenerated with mockery v3.4.0, and only the store mock changed.Testing
pkg/store:TestPruneStatescovers deletion, no-ops for lower or equal heights, resuming from the marker, and leaving height and current state untouched.block/internal/pruner:all-mode test now checks state pruning and the kept boundary state.TestPrunerPruneMetadataAfterBlockPruning).go test ./block/... ./pkg/... ./node/...,go vetandgolangci-lintare clean.Summary by CodeRabbit
