fix(submitter): don't halt the node when SetFinal fails during DA backlog - #3473
Conversation
…klog When the DA-included height lags far behind the head, the DA inclusion loop finalizes historical heights one by one. EVM SetFinal resolves each height through HeaderByNumber; once Reth has pruned that history, every retry fails and the submitter reports a critical error that shuts down an otherwise healthy node. - EVM SetFinal: if the block lookup fails but the EL head is at or above the requested height, the block is historical and unavailable, so skip the finalized update with a warning. Lookups above the head, or when the head cannot be read, still return an error. - Submitter: on exhausted SetFinal retries, log and retry on the next tick instead of sending a critical error. The DA-included height does not advance past a height that failed to finalize.

📝 Walkthrough
Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to This change stops a node from halting when finalizing a historical block fails because the execution layer has pruned that history. Transient errors are still returned and retried. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains. A persistent finalization failure can leave the DA-included height stalled, but the PR documents this as an accepted tradeoff. Pre-merge checks |

return apply only when the numbered block lookup error is recognized as pruned
history. Return transient lookup errors instead, even when HeaderByNumber
reports a head at or above blockHeight, so the height remains retryable.

Restrict the historical-block skip in SetFinal to lookup errors that mean the execution layer no longer serves the block: JSON-RPC code 4444 (pruned history, EIP-4444, used by geth and reth) or ethereum.NotFound. Transient lookup failures are returned so the submitter retries the height instead of advancing the DA-included height past it.
Problem
When the DA-included watermark lags far behind the execution/sync head,
processDAInclusionLoopfinalizes historical heights sequentially. EVMSetFinalresolves each height viaHeaderByNumber; once Reth has pruned that history, every retry fails and the submitter callssendCriticalError, shutting down a node that is otherwise healthy and in sync over P2P.Observed on a node with execution and sync at the same height and the DA watermark at ~279552960: the node halted on
SetFinal(279552961).Changes
execution/evmSetFinal: on block lookup failure, read the EL head. If head >= requested height, the block is historical and unavailable — log a warning and skip the finalized forkchoice update; a later height moves the finalized label forward. If the height is above the head or the head cannot be read, return the error as before (EL down still surfaces).SetFinalretries, log andbreak; the next tick retries. The DA-included height does not advance past a height that failed to finalize. No moresendCriticalErroron this path.Behaviour change
Persistent
SetFinalfailures (including forkchoice rejections) no longer halt the node. The signal is a flatDAInclusionHeightgauge plus a per-tick error log — alerting should key off that. Note thatallpruning mode is gated on DA-included height, so ev-node pruning also stalls while finalization is stuck. Not in scope
SetFinalto one call per tick: theExecutor.SetFinalcontract implies per-height calls (e.g.DummyExecutorcleans up per-height state), so this would be a cross-repo contract change.Tests
TestSubmitter_processDAInclusionLoop_setFinalFailureDoesNotHalt—SetFinal(1)fails for all retries, then succeeds next tick; asserts the watermark reaches 2 and no critical error is emitted. Fails onmain.TestSetFinal_UnavailableBlock— below head (skip, no forkchoice call), above head (error), head unreachable (error).Summary by CodeRabbit
