A device that hosts a hotspot and serves its peer link now advertises a small Bluetooth beacon, and a nearby device can fetch the hotspot's password over Bluetooth once both have proven their identities with the same mutual TLS the Wi-Fi link uses. This is the host half of R76's Bluetooth path, stacked on #137. The joining half on Android needs a Bluetooth central, which arrives in the next slice over btleplug once deviceplug/btleplug#495 lands or through a pin on the fork. Until then a system without a central neither scans nor joins, and join_nearby answers Unsupported.

The plan gains decisions 18 to 21 and the full state tables for the beacon and the joiner. The beacon is a legacy advertisement every platform can see, carrying the first 8 bytes of the certificate fingerprint. Scanning runs in the background by default and joining on its own is off unless the application turns it on. Every backend reports one Bluetooth readiness, and the system prompt to turn Bluetooth on only ever runs inside a call the user triggered. host_hotspot now answers the offer together with the beacon's status, so the offer still reaches the application when Bluetooth is off.

The exchange and both state machines are proven in memory against real nodes, and on a Galaxy A35 the demo's beacon showed on its panel while the phone's Bluetooth dump listed the demo's legacy connectable advertisement and its GATT service. Android offers no way to scan from adb without an application, so the other phone sighting the beacon waits for the central. Two connetto-peer tests need the issuer name fix in #139 and pass once the stack is rebased on it.

Nearby devices had no Bluetooth path to discover a hotspot host or receive its offer. The exchange authenticates both devices with certificates over mutual TLS before the host sends the offer, preserving the identity checks used by the Wi-Fi link.

The host advertises the first eight bytes of its certificate fingerprint. Hotspot hosting remains available when Bluetooth is off or beacon advertising fails, with beacon status reported separately. Android supports advertising and GATT exchange. Joining requires a Bluetooth central, and applications must enable autojoin explicitly.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds Bluetooth beaconing and authenticated hotspot-offer exchange. It adds Android Bluetooth peripheral support and integrates Bluetooth readiness, advertising, scanning, and exchange operations into the client. It also updates the Android proof harness and desktop demo.

Changes: Bluetooth beacon and peer exchange

Layer / File(s) Summary
Beacon and authenticated offer exchange
crates/connetto-peer/Cargo.toml, crates/connetto-peer/src/*, crates/connetto-client/Cargo.toml
The peer crate adds beacon encoding based on an eight-byte fingerprint prefix, chunked-stream TLS exchanges, hotspot offer frames, and typed exchange errors. Tests cover trust decisions, protocol versions, timeouts, and chunk handling.
Android Bluetooth peripheral and JNI
crates/connetto-peer-android/android/src/main/AndroidManifest.xml, crates/connetto-peer-android/android/src/main/kotlin/dev/connetto/peer/*, crates/connetto-peer-android/src/android.rs, crates/connetto-client/src/bluetooth/android.rs, crates/connetto-client/src/hotspot/android.rs
The Android plugin handles Bluetooth permissions, readiness prompts, advertising, GATT events, and notifications. The client JNI backend maps plugin state and events; the hotspot JNI helper can load either plugin class.
Client Bluetooth orchestration and APIs
crates/connetto-client/src/bluetooth.rs, crates/connetto-client/src/builder/native.rs, crates/connetto-client/src/enrolment/*, crates/connetto-client/src/hotspot.rs, crates/connetto-client/src/lib.rs
The client runs the Bluetooth machine with the hotspot machine, adds Bluetooth and beacon state and operations, and routes host requests through the Bluetooth command channel. Hotspot hosting returns Hosted, which includes beacon status. Enrolment tests use the Bluetooth command channel.
Android proof, demo, and design records
crates/connetto-test-harness/src/bin/connetto-android-proof.rs, examples/dioxus-desktop-demo/src/main.rs, plans/master-implementation-plan.md
The Android proof harness adds a Bluetooth mode and checks the advertising set and GATT service. The demo displays Bluetooth and beacon state, and the implementation plan records the Bluetooth exchange and lifecycle design.

Full details: Git Dependency Pin Stays Out Of Commits

Explanation

Cargo.lock is modified in the reviewed range (+6/-28). The repository still declares git dependencies without rev or tag, including diesel-sqlite-session in crates/connetto-client/Cargo.toml and crates/connetto-web/Cargo.toml, plus branch-based git dependencies in the root and other manifests. This breaks the invariant that a modified lockfile must not accompany unpinned git dependencies.

Full details: Crate Readme Is The Crate Documentation

Explanation

crates/connetto-client/src/lib.rs is changed in the reviewed range, but it lacks #![doc = include_str!("../README.md")]. crates/connetto-client/README.md is absent in both base and head, so the crate documentation invariant remains broken. crates/connetto-peer/src/lib.rs already contains the directive, and its Rust fence is not annotated ignore or no_run.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

A call that arrives while a prompt runs is never answered.

When self.prompting is Some, prompt_for pushes the new waiter into action_waiters and starts nothing. apply_prompt answers only batch.pending, so the new waiter stays in action_waiters until some later, unrelated action starts. Example: a second fetch_offer or enable_bluetooth while the first prompt is up. That caller hangs until its own outer timeout and then gets TimedOut, even though the prompt it waited on already finished.

apply_prompt has a second defect. With Ready, it calls begin_join_exchange for every pending Fetch or Join. Each call overwrites JoinerState::Exchanging and drops the earlier caller's reply. It also skips the Busy rule that begin_manual enforces.

Add waiters to the running batch. In apply_prompt, start one exchange and answer the rest Busy.

Proposed fix

+            }
+        }

In apply_prompt, answer BluetoothError::Busy to a Fetch or Join when self.joiner is already Exchanging.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

A finished exchange is torn down before its last chunks are notified.

The offer task writes its chunks into the bridge's unbounded queue. It then shuts down and sends reply. In the same tick, this loop drains only what the bridge has already moved into outbound and then reads Ok from reply. The caller then removes the exchange and calls peripheral.disconnect(device).

If the bridge has not forwarded everything, the queued offer chunks are dropped together with outbound_rx. This can happen on a multi-thread runtime, or when the bridge task is scheduled after the runner. The joiner never gets a complete Offer and fails at EXCHANGE_BOUND.

The invariant is that every byte the host task wrote reaches notify before the disconnect. Defer a successful end until outbound.try_recv() returns TryRecvError::Disconnected. The bridge drops its sender only after its queue is empty and the stream's tx is gone.

Removing by ascending index shifts later indices.

done holds indices in ascending order. Each self.pending_join.remove(index) shifts every later element down by one. If two joins settle in the same tick, the second removal takes the wrong JoinPending. That answers the wrong caller and marks the wrong host tried. It can also panic when an index runs past the end.

Two joins can be pending at once. A finished Kind::Join exchange leaves JOIN_BOUND + MARGIN in pending_join, and the joiner becomes Idle at once, so a second join can start and finish inside that window.

A panic here ends the runner. The runner is inside the client pump's tokio::join!, so the panic takes the whole pump down.

The beacon hands out the peer port as it stood when the hotspot started.

HostState::Hosting { offer } stores port from (self.peer_port)() at start. Decision 14 lets host_hotspot run before the device holds a certificate. In that case the stored port is None.

The beacon starts later, once the device serves. hosting_offer still returns the stored offer, so the Bluetooth exchange sends the joiner port: None. The joiner then joins with no gateway dial, and no link forms.

Command::Host already refreshes the port for this reason (Line 405). The invariant from the design is that the offer's port is present while the device serves. Refresh it here too.

The passphrase is not reliably wiped on drop.

The doc on passphrase says the value is "zeroed on drop". The code does not keep that promise:

  • fill(0) just before clear() and deallocation is a dead store. The optimizer can remove it.
  • wire_passphrase clones the secret into a String that nobody wipes.
  • PeerFrame::Offer { passphrase, .. } also holds the secret in a String that nobody wipes.
  • The joiner reuses the frame's String buffer through passphrase.into_bytes(). The serialized copy is never wiped.

Use zeroize::Zeroizing<Vec<u8>> for the field, or call Zeroize::zeroize in drop. Remove the claim from the doc for the transient copies that cannot be wiped.

The doc comment states the wrong verifier rule.

The doc says the issuers share a subject DN. It also says the link completes "once the verifier disambiguates lists by the issuer's key, not its DN". The verifier matches lists by issuer name. PR #139 makes the test pass by giving each issuer a distinct subject name. The inner comment at Lines 2503-2504 repeats the shared-DN claim.

State what the test defends: the dialer keeps a list signed by a sibling issuer under the same root, and the link completes.

Based on learnings: "the connetto-peer verifier matches revocation lists to certificates by issuer name, not by issuer key... Do not describe the verifier as matching lists by key in comments for crates/connetto-peer/src/tests.rs."

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

A full inbound channel ends the exchange as if the reader were gone.

Broken invariant: an exchange ends on its reader's close and not on backpressure.

exchange.inbound.try_send(bytes).is_err() and sender.try_send(bytes).is_ok() treat TrySendError::Full the same as Closed. Both channels have a capacity of 64. poll() drains every queued chunk in one synchronous pass, and the TLS task cannot read between those sends. At MTU 23 a chunk carries 20 bytes. One TLS 1.3 flight with a certificate chain is about 1.5 to 2 KB, which is more than 64 chunks. If one flight arrives between two looks, the 65th chunk returns Full. The machine then tears down a healthy exchange: the host disconnects the device, and the joiner marks the host tried.

Fix: handle Full separately from Closed. Keep the overflow in a VecDeque<Vec<u8>> on HostExchange and on JoinerState::Exchanging. Flush that queue before new chunks on each tick. End the exchange only on TrySendError::Closed.

host_hotspot can hang while Bluetooth is Ready and the beacon never starts.

Broken invariant: every host_hotspot caller gets an answer. This includes the hotspot's own error.

answer_hosted chooses BeaconDecision::Wait when the state is Ready and self.host is not Advertising. It then returns before it reads any offer, because hosted.beacon is None. tick_host starts the beacon only if hosting and serving are both Some and peripheral.start succeeds. In these reachable states the beacon never starts, so the caller is never answered:

  • The device holds no certificate yet, so serving is None. Decision 14 lets host_hotspot run before enrolment.
  • The hotspot fails, for example with MissingPermission, NoChannel or TimedOut. hosting then stays None, and the Err waits behind the beacon.
  • peripheral.start keeps failing.

This conflicts with the stated contract that the offer stays available when the beacon is not up.

Fix: wait on the beacon only while the offer is Ok and the device is hosting and serving. In every other case, answer at once. Send the hotspot's Err without a beacon outcome. For an Ok offer that the beacon cannot cover, resolve a refusal such as BluetoothError::Failed("the device does not serve its peer"). The beacon must not hold back the offer.

Update answer_hosted and its reply loop so BeaconDecision::Wait is used only for
a successful offer when the device is hosting and serving; send hotspot errors
immediately, and resolve successful offers that cannot be covered by the beacon
with a refusal. Pass the serving state into answer_hosted and ensure beacon
startup failures cannot leave the caller unanswered.

bluetooth_proof swallows a failed bluetooth_off when the proof succeeds only through and.

result.and(off) returns off's error when result is Ok. That part is correct. When both fail, the proof error wins, and the cleanup failure is dropped without a trace. The invariant "every run ends with Bluetooth off" then fails silently, and the phone stays in an unknown state for the next run.

Log the cleanup error before the proof error takes precedence.

The proof grants the three Bluetooth permissions without an API level check.

BLUETOOTH_SCAN, BLUETOOTH_CONNECT and BLUETOOTH_ADVERTISE exist from API 31 only. On a device below Android 12, pm grant fails for an unknown permission. The ? then aborts the proof before hosting starts. The learning requires gating such permissions on the API level.

Read ro.build.version.sdk and grant these permissions only when it is 31 or more.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Autojoin restarts the exchange with the same host while its join is pending.

Broken invariant: autojoin hands one host's offer to the join seam once per attempt.

A successful Kind::Join exchange does the following:

  • It pushes a JoinPending.
  • It sets the joiner to Idle.
  • It leaves the host's tried flag false.

joined stays false until the network is up. That can take up to JOIN_BOUND + MARGIN while the system approval dialog is shown. On the next tick, Idle moves to Scanning, strongest_untried_host returns the same host, and a new exchange starts. Each exchange that completes calls (self.join) again, so the hotspot machine gets repeated join requests for one network. pending_join also grows with one entry per completed exchange.

Skip autojoin while a join is pending.

An exchange whose GATT connection never completes never ends.

Broken invariant: every joiner exchange ends by EXCHANGE_BOUND.

begin_join_exchange sets deadline and task_reply: None. CentralBackend::connect returns (), so a connect failure cannot be reported. The None => None arm skips the deadline check. If the host leaves range before Connected or Disconnected arrives, the joiner stays in Exchanging indefinitely:

  • Every later fetch_offer and join_nearby call answers Busy.
  • Autojoin and the scan stay stopped.
  • The manual caller never gets an answer.
