sort: handle compression subprocess failures #14951

The GNU test tests/sort/sort-compress-proc.sh currently fails.

Compression subprocesses that exit early may terminate sort with SIGPIPE,
and intermediate merge write failures may return an incorrect exit status.

This issue tracks the fix for the sort/sort-compress-proc.sh GNU test failure.
