fix: Fallout 2 download and a transient manifest-code failure no longer dropping a depot - #2188
Conversation
…the file Fallout 2 installs "Fallout 2 Depot New Base" (38414) and "Depot New English" (38415) — every package grants both — and 38414 declares `master.dat` as a DIRECTORY while 38415 ships it as a 317.74 MiB FILE. On a case-insensitive volume only one can exist, and whichever is laid down second fails: mkdir returns EEXIST over the file, or the file's open returns EISDIR over the directory, and the depot fails with it, taking the run down. (The legacy pre-2020 depot 38411 declares the same folder in upper case, `MASTER.DAT`.) The file wins, at plan time: after every manifest of the run is resolved, a path that is a file somewhere and a directory elsewhere loses the directory — and everything under it, in every depot, since a child of that path could not be written anyway — with a `depot-clash path=… kept=file depot=…` line. A directory is only a container, the file is the form the game can read, and it is what a Windows install converges on (the directory cannot be created over the file). The probe sample, the sweep's ownership set and every write plan see the reduced manifests, so nothing downstream tries to place a dropped entry. The write path applies the same rule to whatever is already on disk, so an install left in the wrong shape by an earlier attempt repairs itself instead of failing: a directory in a file's way is removed (reusing the stat `prepare` already does — no extra syscall), a file in a directory's way is unlinked, and a symlink entry clears either. Tests: 255/255, zero warnings — the clash pass (an exact folded-path clash drops the directory and its child in every depot including an upper-case copy; a non-clashing folder is untouched) and both disk transitions (a file replaces a directory with contents; a directory replaces a stale file). compileLegacyDebugKotlin + JavaWithJavac clean; libgndownload.so rebuilt.

Include installed depots in conflict resolution.
If a file depot is already installed and a conflicting directory depot still needs downloading, the resume check skips the file depot before resolved is built. This call then sees no file conflict. The directory write can fail against the installed file or replace it, while the file depot remains marked installed. Include skipped depots’ paths in the conflict decision, or retain the effective conflict decision across runs.

Delay directory removal until the write can proceed.
prepare deletes the directory before write_depot_sequential checks available space or starts the layout pass. If the space check fails, the old directory tree is gone and no replacement file exists. Account for the replacement during preflight, then remove the directory after the checks succeed and report removal errors.

Eight distinct review findings (13 threads, 5 duplicated by the second bot), all valid. Every one is about the clash repair being right in the run that introduces it and wrong in a neighbouring case. - Installed depots join the decision. The resume check skips a depot that is already installed at the requested build, so its manifest never reached the clash pass — and a directory depot in the same run could then replace the installed FILE (deleting content the store still records as installed). Every depot the store records as installed is now loaded from `completed/` (no key needed: those manifests are already filename-decrypted) and its files participate. That also covers an INSTALL, which filters installed depots out in Kotlin before the plan is built. - Children are found without an explicit directory entry. `master.dat/x.pak` can be listed on its own, with no `master.dat` directory entry to key off, and it is just as unwritable under the file. Each entry's folded ancestors are checked now (O(depth)), instead of a prefix list derived from declared dirs. - `trusted` requires the shape to still be that file. The delta could call a file unchanged while the disk held a directory, a truncated copy or nothing; `prepare` used to delete the directory and the run then skipped the file's jobs and its finalize, leaving the path missing. The trusted set is now applied after the per-file stat, only to files that are a regular file of the manifest's size, and the job filter runs afterwards against the set actually trusted (so a mismatched file keeps its chunks). - The directory removal waits for the free-space preflight. It used to run inside `prepare`, before the guard: a failed preflight left the old tree deleted and no replacement file. It is recorded from the same stat and performed after the guard, with failures propagated instead of ignored. - Recursive removals are contained. `path_is_safe` validates the manifest's spelling, not the disk, so a symlinked ancestor could have sent `remove_dir_all` outside the install directory. All three removal paths resolve the parent and refuse anything that escapes the install root. - A symlink that resolves to a directory is left alone in `create_directory` (it may be another depot's entry; `create_dir_all` accepted it before), and only a file or a dangling link is replaced. A symlink standing where a file must go is unlinked, not recursed through. Tests: 259/259 (+4), zero warnings — installed-depot protection, ancestor clash without a directory entry, the trusted-shape gate (intact / truncated / directory / missing), the symlinked-ancestor refusal (external tree survives), symlink-to-directory kept, directory replaced by a symlink entry. Two older fixtures were inconsistent with the stricter rules and were fixed rather than weakened: the trusted fixture wrote 23 bytes for a 24-byte manifest, and the directory-replacement test now asserts `prepare` leaves the tree for the preflight. compileLegacyDebugKotlin + JavaWithJavac clean; .so rebuilt.
…o code Two findings from utkarshdalal#2187's review. Both concern code that utkarshdalal#2187 introduced and that was merged as-is. A zero manifest request code is not always "this depot has none". The lookup swallowed every exception and returned 0, so one transient RPC failure made `resolveDepotForDownload` report the depot unavailable — and unavailable depots are skipped, letting the run finish as installed without those files. The helper now answers three ways: a code, 0 (Steam answered 0 for every app asked — skip with the reason, which is what utkarshdalal#2187 set out to do), or null (no app answered). A null is not evidence of anything, so the depot is still tried with code 0: a manifest already on disk needs no code and a CDN fetch that does need one fails with the real auth error instead of dropping the depot. The mid-run refresher maps null to 0 as well, which the engine already reads as "keep the current code". The decision is a pure function (`pickManifestRequestCode`) so it is covered without a Steam client: owner's code wins, owner-zero + app-code falls back, both-zero is a definitive absence, and a failed lookup is not an absence. Six unit tests; the module had none for this path. The 401/403 recovery order is now a tested state machine. It was three nested if-blocks inside the fetch loop, which cannot be exercised without HTTP and a real CDN on port 80/443. `manifest_auth_step` states the rule one place — the request code once per fetch, then a host token once per host, then the host really rejected auth — and `refreshed_request_code` states when a refresh is worth retrying (nonzero and different). The loop keeps the exact previous behaviour, including asking for a token in the same pass when the code could not be improved. Three tests: code-before-token, the one-refresh limit, and absent/unchanged/improved codes. Not changed: `code_refresher` is still called on the first 401 even though the caller fetched the code moments earlier. Skipping that needs a freshness signal threaded through JNI for one RPC on an already-failing path, and it is the ordering that makes utkarshdalal#2187 work when the caller's code is stale. Tests: cargo 262/262 (+3), zero warnings. ManifestRequestCodeTest 6/6 under testLegacyDebugUnitTest. compileLegacyDebugKotlin + JavaWithJavac clean; .so rebuilt for both ABIs.

Provide keys for installed depots and ignore stale manifests for current depots.
installed_manifest_paths calls load_cached_manifest(cfg, depot_id, manifest_id, &[]). Completed manifests retain raw CDN bytes, so encrypted filenames can fail decryption and the installed depot contributes no file paths to the clash check.
Looking up the key in Rust's depots list does not fix the already-installed case. Kotlin builds that list only from resolvedDepots; an UpToDate depot is excluded before its key is fetched and before it is added to depotsJson. Pass keys for installed depots through a separate native input, or pass already-decrypted installed manifests.
Also exclude depot IDs already present in resolved before loading cfg.installed_depots(). Otherwise a readable previous manifest can cause drop_paths_shadowed_by_files to remove a directory from that depot's current manifest. The current manifest must be authoritative.

Review of the previous two commits, five findings, all valid. A directory entry that is a symlink used to be kept unconditionally, on the grounds that `create_dir_all` accepts it and it may be another depot's entry. Keeping one whose target lies outside the install tree hands the manifest's files to that target: `write_depot` then writes beyond the root, which every removal path already refuses. The link is now kept only while it resolves inside the root (`resolves_inside`), and replaced by a real directory otherwise — the manifest's kind still wins. The code lookup concluded "no code" too eagerly. A zero from the owning app plus a FAILED request for the downloading app returned 0, which skips the depot — the exact silent drop this path was added to prevent. 0 is now concluded only when every candidate answered 0; any failure with no code makes it null, and a null depot is still tried. The candidates are also asked lazily now: the loop stops at the first code instead of always spending the fallback app's Steam round trip on every depot resolution and auth refresh. Two test fixtures did not test what they claimed: - `dangling` was a regular file, so the dangling-symlink branch of `create_directory` was never taken. It is a real dangling link now, and the test asserts the link is gone rather than shadowed; - the trusted fixture wrote a 23-byte payload while its chunk said `cb_original: 24`. The chunk now derives from the payload. README documents the containment rule for a symlinked directory entry. Tests: cargo 263/263 (+1: a link to an outside directory is replaced and the external tree is untouched), zero warnings. ManifestRequestCodeTest 6/6. compileLegacyDebugKotlin + JavaWithJavac clean; .so rebuilt for both ABIs.

The newest review round, on 2c7a2c3. The P1 one is real and marks a gap this series left open: the containment check only ran where something was about to be REMOVED. `create_directory` therefore called `create_dir_all` on an entry that did not exist yet without looking at its ancestors, and the manifest need never declare the ancestor — `alias/newdir`, where `alias` is a link to somewhere outside, was created outside the install directory. Every file open has the same hole through `make_parent_dirs` (mkdir follows the link, and so does the open). `ensure_parent_within` became `ensure_ancestor_within`: it resolves the NEAREST EXISTING ancestor and requires it under the resolved install root, since the components below it do not exist and so cannot be links. An install dir that does not exist yet is allowed — everything inside it is about to be created. It now runs before every creation: `create_directory` (before the stat, not just before a replace), `create_symlink`, and `make_parent_dirs`, which carries the install root through `DepotFiles::base` so a file whose parent the manifest never declares is checked too. One canonicalize per file creation, on the first open only. The candidate lookup was extracted (`firstManifestRequestCode`) so the lazy loop is testable, and four tests now assert what the round trip is for: the fallback app is not asked once the owner issues a code, it is asked when the owner only answers 0 or fails, and an all-failed lookup ends with no code and no issuing app. That last case was also wrong before: `from` was taken from the first null answer. Tests: cargo 264/264 (+1: a directory under an escaping ancestor is refused and nothing is created through the link), zero warnings. ManifestRequestCodeTest 10/10 (+4). compileLegacyDebugKotlin + JavaWithJavac clean; .so rebuilt.

Check the final path component as well as its ancestors.
ensure_ancestor_within starts at path.parent(). It never checks path itself. Suppose a regular-file path in the manifest is already a symlink on disk, and the symlink points to a regular file outside the install root. Then the following happens:
DepotFiles::preparecallsfs::metadata, which follows the link. It sees a regular file, soblocking_dirstaysfalseandclear_blocking_dirsdoes not remove the link.acquirecallsOpenOptions::open, which also follows the link. The writer then writes chunk data into the external file.set_file_modechanges the mode of the external file.complete_chunk/finalize_remainingcallset_len, which truncates or extends the external file.
The new checks in create_directory already replace directory links that resolve outside the root. Regular-file paths need the same treatment. In make_parent_dirs, unlink a symlink at path if it does not resolve inside target_dir. The writer then creates a real file in its place. create_symlink removes the entry after this call anyway, so this extra step does not change its result.

Ok(())
}Based on learnings: the writer should "reject paths whose components resolve to symlinks ... and open/create final targets with O_NOFOLLOW (or equivalent no-follow semantics)".

Description
Fallout 2 could not be installed at all. Its packages grant Fallout 2 Depot New Base (38414) and Depot New English (38415), and the two disagree about what
master.datis: 38414 declares it as a directory, 38415 ships it as a 317.74 MiB file. A case-insensitive volume can hold only one of them, so whichever depot is laid down second fails —mkdirreturnsEEXISTover the file, or the file'sopenreturnsEISDIRover the directory — and the depot takes the whole run with it. (The pre-2020 depot 38411, which older appinfo still lists, has the same name in upper case as a file.)The file wins. After every manifest of the run is resolved, and before anything else consumes them, a path that is a file in one depot and a directory in another loses the directory — together with everything under it, in every depot, since a child of that path could not be written anyway — and it is logged:
A directory is only a container, the file is the form the game can read (the Fallout engine opens
master.datas an archive), and it is what a Windows install converges on — Valve's own client cannot create the directory over the file either. Paths only clash when they fold to the same name, so a run with no clash is untouched. The probe sample, the removed-content sweep's ownership set and every write plan see the reduced manifests, so nothing downstream tries to place a dropped entry.The write path applies the same rule to what is already on disk, so an install left in the wrong shape by an earlier attempt repairs itself instead of failing: a directory in a file's way is removed once the free-space preflight has passed (so a failed preflight leaves the old tree instead of deleting it), a file in a directory's way is unlinked, and a symlink entry clears either — a symlink that resolves to a directory is left alone, since it may be another depot's entry. Depots the store already records as installed take part in the decision even when the press does not select them, so a run can never replace a file an installed depot owns, and a file the delta calls unchanged is only trusted while it is still the regular file of the manifest's size on disk, so a truncated, missing or directory-shadowed path is revalidated rather than skipped.
Verified on device: Fallout 2 installs;
master.datlands as a ~317.7 MiB file with nomaster.dat/folder, and the game launches.A manifest request code that could not be fetched no longer costs a depot. The lookup swallowed every exception and returned 0, so one transient RPC failure marked the depot unavailable — and unavailable depots are left out of the run, which could then finish as installed without their files. It now answers three ways: a code from the first app that issues one;
0only when Steam answered 0 for every app asked (skip it, with the reason — every host would answer 401); and nothing when a request failed and no app produced a code, in which case the depot is still tried without a code, because a manifest already on disk needs none and a fetch that does need one fails with the real auth error instead of the depot quietly missing. The 401/403 recovery order is a tested state machine as well: the request code is refreshed at most once per fetch, before any host is written off, then a host token once per host, and only then does the host count as rejecting auth.cargo test --release264/264, zero warnings — the plan-time pass (an exact folded-path clash drops the directory and its subtree in every depot, including an upper-case copy, while a non-clashing folder likesound/musicis untouched; children of a file are dropped even when no directory entry declares the parent; an installed depot's file is protected), both disk transitions (a file replaces a directory that has contents; a directory replaces a stale file), the trusted-shape gate (intact, truncated, directory, missing), and the symlink rules (a symlink to a directory inside the tree is kept, one that resolves outside it is replaced, one standing where a file must go replaces it, a dangling one is cleared, a removal that would leave the install dir through a symlinked ancestor is refused, and a directory the manifest never declares is refused when its ancestor is such a link).ManifestRequestCodeTest(10 tests) covers the code-lookup decision and its lazy candidate loop undertestLegacyDebugUnitTest.compileLegacyDebugKotlin+compileLegacyDebugJavaWithJavacclean;libgndownload.sorebuilt for both ABIs.Recording

Fixes Fallout 2 installs failing when two depots disagree about what
master.datis: "Fallout 2 Depot New Base" (38414) declares it a directory, "Depot New English" (38415) ships it as a 317 MiB file. On a case-insensitive volume only one can exist, so whichever depot is written second fails withEEXISTorEISDIRand aborts the run.The file wins. After all manifests are resolved, a directory shadowed by a file of the same folded path is dropped — together with its subtree, in every depot — and logged (
depot-clash). Installed depots join the decision so a run never replaces a file an installed depot owns. The write path applies the same rule on disk, so an install left in the wrong shape by an earlier attempt repairs itself instead of failing. Runs without a clash are untouched.Also fixed
