fix(history): preserve writer progress and complete SDK event snapshots - #1493
Conversation
Capture event rows and stream-size receipts in one synchronous SQLite read transaction, close the database before filesystem validation, and verify the projection generation and invalidation state before accepting the snapshot. Separate transient concurrent changes from repairable cache damage so readers fall back to authoritative history instead of starting rebuild storms. Keep SDK and CLI event pages available when optional repair races or contends. Add an optional lock retry ceiling that remains effective when PM_LOCK_WAIT_MS requests a longer wait, preserving existing lock defaults and event cursors. Retain explicit errors for unreadable or corrupt authoritative history. Cover suspended-reader progress, native SQLite contention, invalidation preservation, repair failure and cursor continuation; include the native regressions in the Windows cohort. Preserve packed Node/Bun single-winner acceptance while distinguishing legal lock contention from a settled duplicate conflict, and run the unchanged real-baseline check in the sequential lane. Track implementation and measured mixed-load evidence in pm-gh1485, pm-xj80p9 and pm-58zon0. Keep timestamp-based late-commit cursor ordering under the existing pm-10l1vm owner. Full repository validation and reviewed closeout follow on this branch.

Set the optional projection SQLite busy timeout to zero and route native contention before BEGIN or metadata reads through the authoritative append and invalidation protocol. Prevent commit contention from holding writers for five seconds after an authoritative append has completed. Add native shared-reader, reserved-writer and exclusive-writer regressions. Pre-fix controls reproduce a 5009ms delay and locked-database failure; the revised protocol preserves both history records and rebuild recovery. Factor write-contention classification to retain the existing complexity cap and document snapshot, validation, lock and fallback boundaries. Close and release pm-gh1485, pm-xj80p9 and pm-58zon0 with structured evidence, linked verification and review provenance. Generate their three Unreleased entries with latest pm-changelog 2026.10.16. Preserve qualified Node26 startup admission failures under their existing owner without weakening any gate. Validation includes 113 affected tests, linked 64/49/20-test cohorts, all four typecheck configurations, packed npx/bunx acceptance for nine packages, terminal defect evidence, graph and history integrity, docs, secrets and audit. Final mixed cohorts each deliver 5000 observations with zero drift and maxima of 1647ms and 1188ms against the unchanged 2000ms observation budget.

A post-append SQLite conflict invalidated the cache and immediately requested full repair. That repair could hold the projection lock across a complete history scan, queueing later authoritative writes. Ordinary indexed appends also lacked an observable progress state, so readers could mistake a paused commit for settled projection damage. Use the token-owned append lease as progress evidence and preserve committed native-contention markers until a zero-wait recovery probe clears. Writers make no retries for the optional projection lock and publish invalidations instead. Repair publication rejects concurrent changes, yields while building large projections, and cleans captured markers outside its publication lock. Route SQLite-less writers through the same invalidation protocol. Otherwise a later indexed append could certify a current byte-size receipt while omitting the middle producer's fact. Preserve authoritative errors, portable recovery, public cursor shapes and the existing quality thresholds. Add deterministic controls for paused appends and repairs, returning native contention, expired leases, large multi-stream rebuilds and omitted facts. Update concurrent-write tests to require safe refusal and complete repair. Record live evidence and structured closure for pm-gh1485 and pm-f7shxf, retain prior delivery evidence for pm-xj80p9 and pm-58zon0, and regenerate the changelog using the latest pm-changelog package. Validation: all 388 focused tests, linked 70-test and omitted-fact cohorts, four typecheck projects, complete static pipeline and terminal tracker gates pass. Separate traced/untraced 100-reader cohorts deliver all 5,000 facts at 1,154/1,212 ms maximum against 2,000 ms. Real Node/Bun SDK consumers preserve three complete cross-runtime facts. Required observability checks pass with 243 paired current-version sessions and no unmatched current-version starts. Full final-head hosted coverage and analyzer checks remain required to merge.

…tries Verify each incremental projection base before advancing its byte receipt and move the derived cache to generation 6 so older incomplete projections heal. Retain incompatible or damaged caches as untrusted state until safe replacement, preserving authoritative appends on platforms that cannot unlink an open cache. Share a five-second automatic repair cooldown after refused publication or repair failure, while retaining complete authoritative fallback and quiet repair. Cover unavailable SQLite, merged streams, legacy receipts, current and legacy native contention, suspended appends, failed callbacks and optional stat errors. Correct schema fixtures to use the actual append owner purpose, and clarify the SDK lock option example and active versus stale-owner retry behavior. Require the coverage aggregate to run and explicitly admit successful shards, so failed or skipped shards cannot leave a passing skipped required context. Keep diagnostic artifacts after threshold failure and exercise the admission command against success, failure, cancellation, skipped and missing outcomes. Refresh seven-day-eligible Greptile 3.6.2 without enabling paid review services. Include structured closure, verification and released claims for pm-gh1485, pm-xj80p9, pm-58zon0, pm-f7shxf, pm-0p4aal and pm-8jhc84. Generate and verify the changelog through the latest pm-changelog 2026.10.16 package. Validation: 467 focused tests and four typecheck projects pass; diagnostic index coverage has no uncovered statements, functions or branches. The full local run has two integration failures and no global coverage verdict; both affected files pass 41 isolated tests with the installed npm module exposed. Static prefix and tail checks pass except qualified Node26 CLI budgets. Unchanged main also fails qualified admission; record both observations under pm-bj7rq0 without relaxing budgets. Final hosted full coverage, Windows, static and analyzers remain required.

Exact-head CI blocker at
Please update the contract expectation to match the intended admission condition, preserving checksum-before-execution and uploader-success checks, then obtain passing final-head shard and aggregate coverage. Do not relax the new admission guard to satisfy the old expectation. Independent isolated source-level reproduction confirms the mismatch. The actual admission shell accepts success and rejects failure/cancelled/skipped/missing results; fixture-only verifier controls accept approved bytes and reject corrupt bytes before chmod. This was not a full local Vitest run and establishes a CI-contract mismatch, not a history-data-loss regression. At 01:21 UTC all 38 exact-head checks were terminal: 33 success, these 2 failures, 2 skipped and 1 neutral. |
The coverage aggregate now runs after failed shards and explicitly rejects their outcomes. Its pinned Codecov verifier therefore also requires successful shard admission, but the older upload contract still expected only !cancelled(). This made shard 3 fail in run39084972483 while the repaired required aggregate correctly reported failure instead of skipping. Align the existing expectation with successful admission while preserving its checksum execution controls, immutable assets, quiet logs and exact-head uploads. Document four shared workflow assertion helpers in response to the reviewer coverage warning. No production runtime, workflow permissions or threshold changes are needed in this revision. Record the failed-head evidence and structured final closure of pm-0p4aal, release its claim, and regenerate the package-owned changelog. Both workflow contract suites pass all 24 tests, and the separate real-shell admission control also passes. Repository docstring quality passes. Required CI jobs other than coverage passed on 9fc5031; DeepScan remained pending. The revised head must pass fresh coverage and required analyzer checks before merge.

History readers held projection writer locks across filesystem validation, delaying authoritative appends. Optional repair could queue writers or repeatedly rebuild during ongoing writes, while SQLite-less producers and merged history could leave a size-certified cache missing facts.
Readers now capture rows and size receipts in one SQLite transaction, close before asynchronous validation, and check generations, invalidations and append leases. Writers fail fast on active projection contention and preserve authoritative progress through invalidation. Generation 6 rejects legacy incomplete projections, incremental writes verify their prior size receipts, and potentially contended caches remain untrusted until safe replacement. Refused repairs share a five-second cooldown; complete authoritative fallback remains available and quiet periods permit index recovery.
This combined delivery also qualifies packed Node/Bun concurrent creates and the real-baseline lane, makes the required coverage aggregate reject unsuccessful shards, aligns verified Codecov upload contracts, and refreshes seven-day-eligible Greptile 3.6.2. No quality threshold, workflow permission or paid service is added or relaxed.
Delivered PM scopes, each with structured closure, linked verification and released ownership:
Verification on 1287ec6:
Local Node26 verification recorded qualified CLI budget failures. A paired unchanged-main run also fails admission, without isolating the cause of individual differences; evidence remains under pm-bj7rq0. No budget changed. Late-timestamp cursor ordering remains separately tracked by pm-10l1vm. Full repair cooldown bounds retry frequency rather than index availability during continuous writes.
The full review of final commit 1287ec6 completed at 02:11 UTC with no actionable code comments and zero unresolved threads. Docstring coverage passes at 81.25%. The remaining scope warning requests splitting changes around issue #1485; the six documented scopes stay together as explicitly requested. Sourcery, Greptile and Cubic remain unavailable because of quota or trial limits, which are not approvals. Required DeepScan success is mandatory before merge.
