What changes

Three fixes to the end-of-run tally, each its own commit.

  1. Assertions made with delayed: false are counted and reported. The matcher always registers the assertion; immediate mode additionally validates it on the spot (raising once, not again at teardown). Before, immediate assertions never reached Reporting.notify, so a suite running in immediate mode ended on 0 verified … NOTHING WAS VERIFIED and its failures were absent from the HTML report.
  2. A capture that vanishes before the comparison is a difference, not a crash. Comparison#find_difference returned failed_by = "missing_image" (a String) and two callers index it as a Hash, raising TypeError. failed_by is now always a Hash; quick_equal? returns a proper [false, result] pair for that case; the HTML report shows the entry as an error (no capture to diff) instead of inferring a pass from the missing diff keys.
  3. The tally never counts an unprocessed comparison as verified. Reporting.count forces each comparison (verdict) before reading its result; a comparison that raises costs one row and one warning naming the screenshot, not the whole test's tally.

Why merge

The summary line and the HTML report are the only two places that say whether a run verified anything. After this PR they are correct for immediate mode, for fail_on_difference = false, and for a capture deleted mid-run.

Drawbacks

  • Code paths that previously called SnapDiff.reset without verifying first (e.g. with fail_on_difference = false) now run one comparison per screenshot at teardown and write diff artifacts for differing ones. That is the cost of a truthful summary; the normal path pays nothing extra (the comparison is memoised).
  • failed_by consumers that compared against the string "missing_image" must read failed_by[:missing_image] instead. No such consumer exists in lib/ or test/.

Evidence

  • bin/rake test:unit: master 812 runs; this branch 820 runs, 0 failures; [snap_diff] Could not tally warnings during the suite: 0.
  • Full suite in the CI image (jetthoughts/cimg-ruby:4.0-chrome, cuprite): 863 runs, 0 failures.
  • End-to-end, Cucumber integration (which sets delayed = false), two scenarios, one with a real diff: master prints 0 verified, 0 changed … NOTHING WAS VERIFIED and writes no report; this branch prints 2 verified, 1 changed, 0 new (not verified). and writes snap_diff_report.html with the failing entry.
  • The repo has no Cucumber coverage (cucumber is commented out in gems.rb). A subprocess test like test/integration/summary_line_test.rb driving cucumber would pin item 1; it needs the gem as a dev dependency, so it is left as a suggestion.

Summary by Sourcery

Correct end-of-run screenshot tallies and reports across immediate assertions, deferred comparisons, and missing captures.

Bug Fixes:

  • Count and report assertions validated with immediate mode.
  • Treat captures missing before comparison as reported differences instead of comparison crashes.
  • Run pending comparisons before tallying results so unprocessed differences are not counted as verified.

Enhancements:

  • Ensure immediate assertions are registered while preventing duplicate teardown failures.
  • Report missing comparison inputs clearly in default and HTML reports, and isolate tally failures to the affected screenshot.

Documentation:

  • Update the architecture documentation to describe assertion registration and immediate validation behavior.

Tests:

  • Add coverage for immediate assertions, deferred tallying, vanished captures, isolated tally errors, and HTML error reporting.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Immediate screenshot assertions are now included in verification totals and reports, while failures still surface during the test.
    • Missing captures are reported as comparison failures with clear error messages instead of causing a TypeError.
    • When fail_on_difference is disabled, changed screenshots are still included in summaries and reports without failing tests.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified that screenshot assertions are registered for reporting, including assertions validated immediately.

RetriggerView in GreptileConfidence Score: 5/5

The PR appears safe to merge; no new actionable issues were found.

Summary

This PR fixes screenshot counts and reporting:

  • Immediate screenshot checks now appear in run reports.
  • A vanished screenshot is reported as a comparison error.
  • Run totals count only comparisons that return a verdict.

The earlier, unnumbered missing-capture finding is fixed: HTML entries now carry an error and omit stale diff links. No new actionable issues were found.

`assert_matches_screenshot(..., delayed: false)` validated the assertion
on the spot and never added it to the session registry. Only the
registry reaches `Reporting.notify` at reset, so an immediate assertion
was invisible to the end-of-run tally and to every reporter: a suite run
with `SnapDiff.config.delayed = false` ended on "0 verified ... NOTHING
WAS VERIFIED", and a mismatch raised inside the test but never made the
HTML report.

The DSL now registers every assertion and, for the immediate path, also
calls `validate!` right away. `validate!` marks the assertion so the
registry's teardown pass treats it as done; without that, a mismatch
would fail the test twice (once in the body, once in `verify`). The flag
is set in `validate!` only, so the delayed path (`session.verify`, which
re-raises on repeated calls) is unchanged.

Not changed: what gets registered. Captures without a baseline still
return nil from the matcher and never become assertions; that is a
separate change.

Reviewer's Guide

The PR makes end-of-run summaries and HTML reporting reflect every registered assertion and only comparisons that actually ran. Immediate assertions are registered and safely memoized, missing captures become reportable differences instead of type errors, and tallying evaluates pending comparisons while isolating failures to the affected screenshot.

📝 Walkthrough

Assertions are registered whether validation is immediate or delayed. Teardown tallying runs comparisons and records results. Missing captures are reported as differences with errors that identify the absent image.

Changes: Assertion reporting and comparison

Layer / File(s) Summary
Register and validate assertions
lib/snap_diff/dsl.rb, lib/snap_diff/screenshot_assertion.rb, docs/architecture.md, test/unit/reporter_interplay_test.rb, CHANGELOG.md
The DSL registers every assertion and validates immediately when configured. Validated assertions do not raise the same failure again during later validation. Tests cover immediate assertions reaching reporters and appearing in totals.
Tally comparisons during teardown
lib/snap_diff/reporting.rb, test/unit/diff_test.rb, test/unit/reporter_interplay_test.rb, CHANGELOG.md
Teardown calls different? for each comparison, updates verified and changed totals after successful comparisons, and warns when a comparison raises. Tests cover tallying without prior verification and continuing after an error.
Report missing image inputs
lib/snap_diff/comparison.rb, lib/snap_diff/reporters/default.rb, lib/snap_diff/reporters/html.rb, test/unit/compare_api_test.rb, test/unit/reporters/html_reporter_test.rb, CHANGELOG.md
Missing-image failures use a named missing_image value. The reporters identify absent inputs and show available artifacts. Tests cover comparisons and HTML output when a capture is missing.

</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**Missing captures poison quick checks**

When a capture disappears before `quick_equal?` runs and the caller later invokes `different?` on the same comparison, `quick_equal?` destructures the `ComparisonResult` returned by `find_difference(quick_mode: true)` as a pair, storing its `meta` Hash in `difference` and returning `nil`. A later `different?` treats that Hash as a result and raises `NoMethodError`, so the comparison still crashes for callers that quick-check before asking for the verdict.

Make the missing-image quick-mode path return the expected `(equal, difference)` pair, or have `quick_equal?` handle a missing-image result without storing its metadata as the comparison result.
</issue_to_address>

       # Step 1 of the layered strategy documented on this class: byte-identical
</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**Missing captures appear as passes**

When a missing-image comparison is recorded by the HTML reporter, `HTML#failure_entry_for` treats this failed result as an ordinary pixel difference, producing no `diff`, `heatmap`, `dimensions_changed` or `error` field. The report template’s `status` therefore labels the entry `pass`, so the HTML report contradicts the test failure.

Represent missing-image failures explicitly in the HTML entry and render them as failures with a message naming the missing input.
</issue_to_address>

### Comment 3

       # Step 1 of the layered strategy documented on this class: byte-identical
</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**External callers miss missing-image failures**

When an external caller checks `failed_by` against the former string for a comparison whose capture disappeared, `ComparisonResult#failed_by` now returns a Hash instead of the former string, so callers matching `"missing_image"` silently miss the failure.

Preserve the old value or provide a documented migration or versioned contract.

…ot a crash

Comparison#find_difference answers "an image is missing" with a null
difference whose failed_by was the String "missing_image". Every reader
indexes failed_by with a Symbol (Comparison#dimensions_changed?,
Reporters::Default#generate), and String#[] with a Symbol raises
TypeError, so `different?` crashed on a capture that disappeared between
capture and comparison (two tests writing the same screenshot name, a
cleanup racing the run).

failed_by is now a Hash like the other failure reason
({missing_image: true}). Three readers had to follow:

- quick_equal? destructures find_difference's answer into [equal, result]
  and first stats both files for identical_files?. A missing input now
  skips the stat and gets a proper [false, result] pair; before, the bare
  Struct splatted into its fields and the next `different?` raised
  NoMethodError.
- `different?` runs the default reporter, which tried to annotate images
  that do not exist. It gets an annotation-free message in the same style
  as the dimension change one: which input is missing, plus the one left.
- The HTML entry carries that message as its error. The page infers
  "pass" from absent diff keys, so without it a vanished capture rendered
  green.

Not changed: when a comparison runs, and what any other failure reason
looks like.
A Comparison is lazy: it does no pixel work until something asks whether
it differs. Reporting.count read the memo (`difference&.different?`), so
a comparison nobody ran counted as verified and matching.

The gap opens when teardown does not validate. With the legacy
`fail_on_difference = false`, verify_screenshots! returns before calling
validate, so a differing screenshot ended the run as "1 verified,
0 changed", with no diff files and no report entry.

count now asks `compare.different?`, which runs the comparison once and
is a memo read on the normal path, where validate already forced it.

Forcing a comparison can raise, so count rescues per assertion: the
screenshot that cannot be compared is warned about by name and left out
of the tally, and the other screenshots of the same test still count.
Before, the one rescue in notify dropped the whole test from the summary
with a message that named nothing. The two diff_test.rb mocks that
counted `different?` reads now expect the extra read.

Cost: a suite that resets without validating now pays one comparison per
screenshot when the run is tallied -- the same cost the default modes pay
at teardown.

Not changed: the record modes, validate, or what the legacy flag does to
the test result (it still never fails one).

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Populate the error message before reading it.

If a missing-image comparison has only run quick_equal?, difference is set but error_message is nil. HTML#record reaches this method without calling processed, so .lines raises. The rescue path lists a generic rendering error instead of the missing input and available baseline. Call compare.processed before reading error_message.
