The Dimensions have changed failure still prints its two images as bare absolute paths, in the format #264 replaced for every other failure. Nothing says which file is the baseline except the order. It's the failure the README warns about when the browser isn't pinned ("every comparison then fails with Dimensions have changed").

Before / after (real output, same failure)

Before:

Screenshot does not match for 'header': Dimensions have changed: 80x80 => 80x60
/home/me/app/doc/screenshots/header.base.png
/home/me/app/doc/screenshots/header.png
spec/system/header_spec.rb:12

After:

Screenshot does not match for 'header': Dimensions have changed: 80x80 => 80x60
  baseline: doc/screenshots/header.base.png
  actual: doc/screenshots/header.png
spec/system/header_spec.rb:12

The change

  • build_error_for_different_dimensions reuses feat: make the failure message legible #264's artifact_lines, limited to baseline and actual: same labels, same alignment, same root-relative paths as every other failure.
  • Only those two. Images of different sizes are never annotated, so any .diff / .heatmap.diff files on disk under that name are left over from an earlier same-size failure. Listing them would point at a diff of a different capture.

Not changed

Evidence

  • test/unit/reporters/default_test.rb: a real 80x80 → 80x60 comparison, with leftover annotations on disk, produces exactly the headline plus the labelled baseline: / actual: block;
  • Mutation check: listing all five artifacts turns the test red, with the three leftovers listed.
  • rake test:unit: 786 runs, 0 failures. standardrb: 181 files, no offenses.

Summary by Sourcery

Align dimension-change failure messages with standard artifact labelling while avoiding misleading stale annotations.

Bug Fixes:

  • Label baseline and actual image paths in dimension-change failures, matching other screenshot failure messages.
  • Preserve unrelatable paths instead of raising an error when rendering failure artifacts.

Enhancements:

  • Restrict dimension-change output to the two input images so stale annotation files are not reported.

Tests:

  • Add coverage for labelled size-change output and stale annotation files.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Size-change error reports now show the baseline and actual images that exist, with paths relative to the project root when possible.
    • Paths that cannot be made relative are shown as provided. Leftover annotation and heatmap files from earlier runs are omitted from the report.
    • Dimension changes continue to be shown in the error message, such as 80x80 => 80x60.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 4/5

Restore the path fallback before merging so comparisons across Windows drives still return a result.

Summary

Size-change failures now label the baseline and actual images using the shared artifact formatter.

  • Size-change failures label the baseline and actual images.

Reviews (2) · Last reviewed commit: "fix: drop the display_path guard nothing..." · Reviewed by Greptile

The "Dimensions have changed" message still printed its two images as
bare absolute paths, in the format snap-diff#264 replaced for every other
failure: no labels, so only the order said which file was the
baseline.

It now reuses snap-diff#264's artifact block, limited to baseline and actual.
Images of different sizes are never annotated, so any .diff or
.heatmap.diff files on disk under that name are leftovers from an
earlier same-size failure and must not be listed. The headline is
unchanged; the README quotes it.

Rendering these paths routes the size-change message through
display_path for the first time, so display_path now keeps a path it
can't relate to the root (another Windows drive) as given instead of
raising, as ScreenshotAssertion's call-site rendering already does.

Reviewer's Guide

Dimension-change failures now use the same labeled, root-relative artifact formatting as other failures, listing only baseline and actual screenshots to avoid stale annotations; path rendering also safely falls back for incompatible roots, with regression tests and changelog documentation.

On Windows, comparing images on different drives can fail instead of reporting a dimension mismatch. This is a narrow API case; the PR is mergeable if the limitation is accepted or the reporter is made to retain the original paths.

If this path starts with .. and raises error, looks like we passes wrong params and we should find this asap. Could you share how have you got to this? What case have you found that you think we should hide the error?

Agreed, it shouldn't. Removed; a misconfiguration should surface.

@oboxodo please check the comments

config.root= always expands the root and artifact paths are expanded
before relative_path_from, so the "different prefix" ArgumentError the
rescue swallowed needs either a root the config API cannot produce (the
removed test stubbed one) or artifacts on another Windows drive than the
root, which nothing here can test and no user has reported. If it ever
raises, a misconfiguration should surface, not be hidden.

display_path is back to exactly what master has; size changes now share
it with every other failure, guard-free.

Thanks for the review! You're right on all three: I let my AI agent be overly defensive with that guard, adding it without a real case behind it. My last commit removes it, so display_path is back to exactly what master has.

#303 added the same guard to ScreenshotAssertion#display_path; happy to drop that one too in a follow-up if you'd like them consistent.

  • P1 Comparisons across drives fail lib/snap_diff/reporters/default.rb:162 ▶

If the images are on a different Windows drive from SnapDiff.config.root, removing this fallback makes relative_path_from raise ArgumentError. The public SnapDiff.compare method accepts those paths, and the exception escapes processed, so callers lose the comparison result and failure message. Restore the rescue ArgumentError fallback that prints the original path.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep cross-drive dimension-mismatch paths reportable.

SnapDiff.compare accepts existing files without requiring them to share the configured root. For different dimensions, artifact_lines calls display_path, which calls relative_path_from. On different Windows drives, Ruby raises ArgumentError, so the comparison raises instead of returning its dimension-mismatch report.

Rescue that path-conversion error and retain the original path.

IMHO the bots' cross-drive point applies equally to same-size failures on master (display_path has no guard there either), so it's not introduced here. Removed per review; if a Windows user hits it, it deserves its own issue.
