Dependency Bump Evaluation

Version change: @types/node 22.20.5 -> 26.6.5 (major)
Semver bump type: major (spans 4 major versions: 22 to 26)

Changes:

• Node.js type definitions updated to match Node.js 26 API surface
• Buffer type is now generic (Buffer) instead of plain Buffer
• undici-types transitive dependency bumped from ~6.21.0 to ~8.9.0
• Stream types now expose toAsyncStreamable as a private name in declarations
• Some @ts-expect-error suppressions are no longer needed (underlying type issues resolved upstream)

Breaking changes: Yes — 4 TypeScript compilation errors detected in CI:

1. lib/network/kmip/transport/TransportTemplate.ts:135 — string | NonSharedBuffer is not assignable to Buffer | undefined (Buffer type became generic)
2. lib/network/kmip/transport/TransportTemplate.ts:179 — Property errors does not exist on type Error (AggregateError typing changed)
3. lib/storage/metadata/file/RecordLog.js:1 — Declaration emit requires private name toAsyncStreamable from node:stream (stream type internals exposed)
4. lib/network/http/server.ts:445 — Unused @ts-expect-error directive (previously suppressed error no longer occurs)

Security concerns: None — this is a devDependency (type definitions only) with no runtime impact

Impact on codebase: Significant. The project has 68+ TypeScript files importing Node.js built-in types, with heavy usage of http, stream, crypto, Buffer, and tls types. The Buffer generics change and stream declaration changes affect core modules.

Additional note: NodeJS.Timer in lib/storage/metadata/mongoclient/MongoClientInterface.ts:274 is deprecated in @types/node v26 — should be changed to NodeJS.Timeout.

CI Status: Tests (Node 22, Node 24) and prettier all fail at the build step due to TypeScript compilation errors

Recommendation: BREAKING CHANGES

Notes: This bump requires code changes to fix 4 compilation errors before it can be merged. The fixes are straightforward:

• Add explicit type annotations or casts for the Buffer/NonSharedBuffer issue
• Use AggregateError type assertion or check for the .errors property
• Add explicit return type annotation to resolve the RecordLog.js declaration emit issue
• Remove the now-unnecessary @ts-expect-error directive in server.ts

Consider whether the project actually needs Node 26 types given CI runs on Node 22 and 24. An alternative is to pin @types/node to a version matching the supported Node.js versions (e.g., @types/node@^22).
