  • Fixes GHSA-w5hq-g745-h8pq: v3(), v5(), and v6() did not validate that writes would remain within the bounds of a caller-supplied buffer, allowing out-of-bounds writes when an invalid offset was provided. A RangeError is now thrown if offset < 0 or offset + 16 > buf.length.

Dependency Bump Evaluation

Version change: 11.1.1 -> 14.0.3 (3 major version jumps)
Semver bump type: major (x3: v12, v13, v14)

Changes:

  • v12.0.0: Remove CommonJS support, drop Node.js 16, update to TypeScript 5.2
  • v13.0.0: Make browser exports the default
  • v14.0.0: Expect global crypto (requires Node.js 20+), drop Node.js 18, minimum TypeScript 5.4.3
  • v14.0.1–v14.0.3: Bug fixes (v1 nsecs overflow, v7 seq alignment, CITGM fix)

Breaking changes:

  • CommonJS removal (v12): This is the highest-risk change. The project compiles to CommonJS ("module": "commonjs" in tsconfig.json) and 7 files use require('uuid'). Node.js >= 22 supports require(esm) natively, which should handle this transparently, but this is an architectural change worth verifying.
  • Global crypto requirement (v14): Project requires Node.js >= 22, where crypto is globally available. No impact.
  • TypeScript >= 5.4.3 (v14): Project uses TypeScript ^5.6.3. No impact.
  • Drop Node.js 18 (v14): Project requires Node.js >= 22. No impact.

Security concerns:

  • v14.0.0 fixes GHSA-w5hq-g745-h8pq: out-of-bounds writes in v3(), v5(), and v6() when an invalid offset is provided. This codebase only uses v4() so is not directly vulnerable, but the fix is still good to have.
  • Install script change: prepare script modified (standard build step for uuid — not a supply chain concern).

Impact on codebase:

  • Only uuid.v4() is used across 12 files — no usage of v3(), v5(), v6(), or any removed/changed APIs
  • 7 files use require('uuid') (CJS pattern), 5 files use import (ESM pattern, compiled to CJS by TypeScript)
  • All explicit version requirements are satisfied (Node.js >= 22, TypeScript >= 5.6.3)
  • The CJS-to-ESM transition via Node.js require(esm) interop is the only runtime risk

Recommendation: REVIEW REQUIRED

Notes:

  • CI checks are still in progress — wait for all checks to pass before merging, particularly the test suite which will validate that require(esm) interop works correctly with the compiled CommonJS output.
  • If CI is green, this should be safe to merge. The only API used (v4) has no breaking changes across any of the major versions.
  • Consider migrating the 7 remaining require('uuid') calls to ESM import syntax in a follow-up to align with uuid's ESM-only distribution.
