Problem

ROB-1743: self-hosted runner calls https://api.robusta.dev/api/config/supabase-keys, Cilium drops it and raises an alert. The runner falls back to the token's key and keeps working.

The runner fetches the key from ROBUSTA_API_ENDPOINT before every sign-in: at startup and on every JWT re-sign-in, with 3 attempts each time. That env var defaults to SaaS. Generated runner values only started setting it on 2026-05-01 (relay#501 / ROB-3778), so self-hosted values generated before then leave it on the default. SaaS relay only holds keys for SaaS stores, so the call could never return a key that works for a self-hosted store.

Change

fetch_supabase_api_key now skips the request when ROBUSTA_API_ENDPOINT is Robusta SaaS and the token's store_url isn't (robusta.dev, *.robusta.dev, *.supabase.co count as SaaS). The runner signs in with the token's key, as it already did after the failed fetch.

Unchanged: SaaS stores in every region, staging, and self-hosted runners whose endpoint points at their own backend all still fetch. If SaaS storage ever moves to a new domain, runners would skip the fetch and use the token key, which is the pre-ROB-1161 behavior.

Not in this PR

Same root cause (the runner's ROBUSTA_API_ENDPOINT left on the SaaS default), not covered here:

  • Version check (/api/runner/get_info): once at startup when ENABLE_TELEMETRY is on, which is the default.
  • Holmes Slack bot check (/api/holmes/integrations/slack/runner): when a Slack sink sends a finding.
  • EU/AP SaaS installs with pre-May values: they fetch the key from the US relay, get a key for the wrong store, and fall back to the token key. They'll stop signing in once EU/AP disable the legacy keys. One possible fix: when ROBUSTA_API_ENDPOINT is unset, derive it from ROBUSTA_TELEMETRY_ENDPOINT or RELAY_EXTERNAL_ACTIONS_URL, which the generator has set for longer.
  • Eager fetch: __connect calls the relay before checking KEY_CACHE, so the 24h cache never saves the HTTP call. Holmes checks the cache first.

Testing

  • tests/test_supabase_key_fetch.py: self-hosted stores make no request; SaaS stores (US, EU, supabase.co, trailing-dot host) and a self-hosted endpoint still fetch; a malformed ROBUSTA_API_ENDPOINT falls back instead of raising. The self-hosted and malformed-endpoint cases fail without the fix.
  • tests/test_supabase_key_fetch.py + tests/test_supabase_dal_sign_in.py: 24 passed.
  • Not run against a live self-hosted install.

Generated by Claude Code

The runner asks ROBUSTA_API_ENDPOINT for its Supabase api key on every
connect, and that endpoint defaults to api.robusta.dev. Self-hosted
runners whose values never set it went out of the cluster to Robusta
SaaS at startup and on every JWT re-sign-in, so egress policies (Cilium
at Infineon) blocked and alerted on it, three times per connect with
the retries.

SaaS relay only holds keys for SaaS stores, so that request could never
return a key for a self-hosted store. Skip it when the endpoint is
Robusta SaaS and the token's store_url is not (robusta.dev or
supabase.co); the runner signs in with the token's key as before. A
self-hosted endpoint, or a SaaS store in any region, still fetches.

Walkthrough

fetch_supabase_api_key now receives the store URL and skips requests to a Robusta SaaS relay when the store is not classified as SaaS. SupabaseDal.__connect passes the store URL. Tests cover URL classification, relay behavior, failures, and retries.

Exercise the routing through SupabaseDal.__connect.

test_does_not_reach_saas_for_a_self_hosted_store calls fetch_supabase_api_key directly. The sign-in fixtures bypass SupabaseDal.__init__ with SupabaseDal.__new__. A regression that passes the SaaS relay URL from __connect can therefore leave both tests passing.

Add an integrated connection test with a self-hosted self.url and SaaS ROBUSTA_API_ENDPOINT. Assert that no request is made and that __login receives the token key fallback.

Classifying the URLs ran urlparse outside the fetch's try, so a
ROBUSTA_API_ENDPOINT with an unmatched "[" raised at startup instead of
falling back to the token key as it did before. A malformed URL now
counts as not SaaS, which sends it down the fetch and its fallback.

Hostnames are also compared without a trailing dot, so
sp.robusta.dev. is still a SaaS store.

what will happen in that case in other regions if no ROBUSTA_API_ENDPOINT will be set? will it still fallback to us?

Yes, same as before this PR. With ROBUSTA_API_ENDPOINT unset the endpoint is https://api.robusta.dev. An EU/AP store (sp.eu.robusta.dev) is a SaaS host, so should_fetch_keys_from_saas returns True and the runner still asks the US relay. The US relay's /api/config/supabase-keys only validates that account_id is a UUID and returns its own store's key (or a 500 if that key isn't publishable). Signing in to the EU store with that key fails, and the runner falls back to the token's key.

This PR only skips the call when the store isn't Robusta SaaS at all, so EU/AP behavior is unchanged. Values generated since 2026-05-01 (relay#501) set ROBUSTA_API_ENDPOINT to the region's API. Older EU/AP values don't, which is the gap listed under "Not in this PR". It matters once EU/AP disable the legacy keys, because then the token key fails too.

Possible fix: when ROBUSTA_API_ENDPOINT is unset, derive it from ROBUSTA_TELEMETRY_ENDPOINT or RELAY_EXTERNAL_ACTIONS_URL, which the generated values have set per region for longer. I can add it here or in a follow-up.
