role="button" on
inside
violates axe aria-allowed-role and list rules, which breaks downstream a11y test suites (e.g. antd CI on every component rendering Pagination). Remove the invalid role while keeping all a11y improvements from #690: aria-label, aria-current, aria-disabled and keyboard activation.

Valid concern — this is exactly the tradeoff #690 tried to solve when it added the role. However, role="button" on an
inside
is not allowed by ARIA in HTML, so the v1.5/1.6 markup cannot ship in any axe-gated downstream: antd's CI fails 5 test jobs over aria-allowed-role + list on every component rendering Pagination (ant-design/ant-design#58604).
Moving focus/handlers onto a real inside the
cannot be done unconditionally, because itemRender returns arbitrary nodes (links, icons, null) that cannot be nested inside a . The dual-path approach — native only when the default render is used, li-as-control otherwise (also suggested by CodeRabbit below) — is a sound future direction, but it changes the DOM/CSS contract for the default case (downstream styles target the li directly) and doubles the behavior matrix, so I'd keep it out of this compliance-fix patch.
This PR restores the pre-1.5.0 state (a bare focusable
, which shipped for years) while keeping every #690 improvement — aria-label, aria-current="page", aria-disabled, Enter/Space activation — so assistive-tech users get strictly more information than v1.4.x, without the spec violation.
Happy to follow up with the dual-path in a separate PR if that's the preferred direction.

Same reasoning as my reply on the Pager.tsx thread — the itemRender API contract prevents moving focus/handlers onto an inner control in this patch; the dual-path native-button direction is proposed there as the follow-up.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

src/Pagination.tsx:474-505
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Move to #728 |

🤔 Background
#690 (v1.5.0) added
role="button"to the
pager items to improve keyboard support and labels. However,role="button"is not an allowed role for
inside
/
, so the markup now violates axe rules:aria-allowed-role: "ARIA role button is not allowed for given element"list: "
and
must only directly contain
,or<template>elements" (therole="button"override drops the implicitlistitemsemantics)💥 Impact
Downstream projects running axe-based a11y tests on anything that renders Pagination fail CI. Example: ant-design/ant-design#58604 — all 5 test jobs red with 1740
aria-allowed-roleviolations across pagination / list / table / transfer / config-provider suites.🔧 Fix
Remove the invalid
role="button"from all five
sites (page items, prev, next, jump-prev, jump-next) while keeping every a11y improvement from #690:aria-labelon all itemsaria-current="page"on the active itemaria-disabledon prev/nexttabIndex+ Enter/Space activationThe net markup is strictly more accessible than pre-#690 (no role, no labels, no Space-key support) and axe-compliant again.
An alternative would be rendering a real
inside each
(WAI-ARIA APG pagination pattern), butitemRenderaccepts arbitrary custom content, so the li-as-control pattern avoids nested interactive elements.✅ Verification
