plain-forge now works with plain-parser 0.2.0, the release that reads the current ***plain syntax, and makes sure users get it.
What a user sees
npx plain-forge install and npx plain-forge update check the installed plain-parser. When it is older than 0.2.0, they upgrade it with uv. When uv cannot do that, for example because the parser came from pipx, they print the command to run. A parser that is already 0.2.0 or newer is left alone. --skip-plain-parser works for update too.
Health check
When the installed parser rejects the current syntax, plain-healthcheck and check-plain-env now say that plain-forge needs plain-parser 0.2.0 or newer and name the upgrade command.
Before it works end to end
Nothing. plain-parser 0.2.0 is on PyPI since today.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Installation and updates now check whether plain-parser supports the required syntax and attempt to upgrade outdated versions. If an upgrade is unavailable or fails, upgrade guidance is provided.
The update command now supports --skip-plain-parser to bypass the parser check and upgrade.
Documentation
Updated setup guidance to explain the minimum parser version and how installation and updates handle outdated versions.

Walkthrough
The installer checks whether plain-parser supports --tests-folder and attempts to upgrade older versions. The update command now performs this check unless --skip-plain-parser is set.
ensurePlainParser checks whether plain-parser check --help includes --tests-folder. If the parser is outdated, it attempts uv tool upgrade plain-parser and checks syntax support again. Tests cover current, upgraded, and failed-upgrade outcomes. Guidance and CI fixtures describe or exercise the parser requirement.
Run parser checks during update bin/cli.mjs, test/cli.test.mjs, AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, README.md
cmdUpdate checks or upgrades the parser unless --skip-plain-parser is set. CLI help, tests, and documentation describe this behavior.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 673b3
Users with pinned outdated parsers may remain unable to use the current syntax after following the displayed upgrade command.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 673b3
Automatic repair can target a different parser installation from the executable that failed its compatibility check. This creates a limited ownership and failure-containment risk for other projects sharing that installation. The explicit skip option, post-upgrade check, and existing healthcheck failure gate reduce exposure.
Retained concerns
Low · architecture · inferred: The repair target is not bound to the executable that failed compatibility detection. If PATH selects an outdated pipx installation while a separate uv-managed installation exists, install or update can attempt to upgrade that separate environment without repairing the selected parser. Other projects using the uv-managed installation can consequently be affected. The post-upgrade probe detects continued incompatibility but does not prevent this ownership mismatch.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The new mutation runs with the caller's existing authority and targets the configured uv tool environment, not a project-specific parser. Its practical reach can include other projects using that parser installation; the inspected flow adds no separate privilege-escalation mechanism.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The healthcheck retains a stronger syntax probe and an explicit failure gate: incompatible parsers must produce FAIL, specifications must not be rewritten to satisfy old syntax, and every top module must parse successfully before the healthcheck passes. These are skill instructions rather than an enforced installer transaction.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — A failed upgrade or failed post-upgrade probe remains visible through an outdated result and manual guidance. The CLI does not consume that result, so successful content refresh and parser readiness remain distinct states.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Bind automatic repair to the resolved parser executable and its owning tool environment. When ownership cannot be established, leave existing environments unchanged and provide manager-specific manual guidance.

Add a test for an upgrade that succeeds but leaves the PATH parser outdated.
The upgradePlainParser recheck is not covered by any test. The "upgrades an old plain-parser with uv" test passes even if the recheck is removed. Its fake uv tool upgrade handler sets h.upgraded = true, so the help output changes to NEW_HELP in the same run. The test asserts only { status: "upgraded" }, which a version that returns upgraded whenever uv exits 0 would also return. The failure-path test uses uv tool upgrade with status: 1, so it exits before the recheck runs. No test covers a successful uv exit combined with a parser that still lacks --tests-folder.
This case can occur when uv upgrades its own copy of plain-parser while an older copy, such as a pipx install, still comes first on PATH. Without the recheck, plain-forge reports success and continues with a parser that rejects the current syntax.

Review comment at @test/python-tools.test.mjs around lines 54 - 67:
Add a test alongside “upgrades an old plain-parser with uv” that makes the
upgrade command succeed while the `plain-parser check --help` handler continues
returning `OLD_HELP`. Assert that `ensurePlainParser` reports `outdated`,
records the upgrade command, and logs the suggested command, so the test
verifies the `upgradePlainParser` recheck detects that the PATH parser remains
outdated.

Test update with and without the skip flag.
This helper adds --skip-plain-parser to every update, so these integration tests never exercise the new parser check. Add controlled CLI tests for both paths, including an already-current forge install.
As per coding guidelines, “When changing install/update/uninstall behavior, update test/cli.test.mjs accordingly — it is the spec for this CLI.”

Review comment at @test/cli.test.mjs at line 621:
Update the CLI test argument helper so it does not unconditionally append
--skip-plain-parser to install and update invocations; let tests control whether
the flag is present. Add integration coverage for both parser-check paths,
including an install of an already-current forge.
