Summary

On compact screens (the compact variant: up to 800px tall or under 1024px wide), e.g. Poki's 1031×580 frame:

  • Smaller header: the desktop nav bar renders at 3/4 scale (zoom: 0.75), 66px tall instead of 88px. The zoom goes on the inner <nav>, not the sticky host, so the host's top offset below a header ad isn't scaled. The account menu's dropdown is portaled to body and positioned from the trigger's on-screen rect, so it still lines up.
  • Solo under the hero card: the Solo/Tutorial row sits under the main lobby card only (column 1) instead of spanning the whole row.
  • Both lobbies are back: the lobby column now runs down beside Solo/Tutorial (row-end-4), so the teams and special cards both show and are taller. This undoes Show only the teams lobby card on compact screens #6167's teams-only rule.

Phones (below sm) and larger screens are unchanged.

Test plan

Headed Chromium against a local dev server:

Viewport Nav height Lobby cards (each) Solo row
1031×580 (Poki on 1080p) 66px (was 88) 236×119, both shown (was teams only) under the hero, 472px wide
1133×744 (iPad mini landscape) 66px 236×152 (was 116) under the hero
744×1133 (iPad mini portrait) mobile bar 232×195 (was 159) under the hero
1920×1080 88px 286×159, unchanged full row, unchanged
390×844 mobile bar stacked, unchanged unchanged
  • npx vitest run tests/client: 5010 passed. npm run typecheck, oxlint and oxfmt are clean.

On compact screens (styles.css):
- the desktop nav bar renders at 3/4 scale (88px -> 66px tall);
- Solo/Tutorial sit under the hero lobby card instead of spanning the
row, and the lobby column runs down beside them, so both secondary
lobby cards are back (#6167 had dropped the special one) and taller.

Walkthrough

Compact layouts now keep the teams and special lobby cards in separate rows and adjust game-mode grid placement based on hero-slot presence. The desktop navigation bar now uses 0.75 zoom on compact screens.

Changes

Game mode layout

Layer / File(s) Summary
Compact game mode grid
src/client/GameModeSelector.ts
The teams and special lobby cards occupy separate rows. When the hero slot is present, Solo/Tutorial uses one column and the lobby section ends at grid row 4. Without the hero slot, the existing full-width placements remain.

Desktop navigation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Compact navigation scale
src/client/components/DesktopNavBar.ts
The navigation bar applies compact:[zoom:0.75] on compact screens. The comments distinguish the bar from its sticky host.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the two main changes: a smaller header and Solo placed under the hero card for compact screens. The changeset matches both. The title is short and specific. It does not name the restored lobby cards, but that is a secondary point.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description states the compact-screen target, the 0.75 zoom on the inner nav, the Solo row placement, and the restored lobby column. These match the file summaries for GameModeSelector.ts and DesktopNavBar.ts. It also gives a test plan. The description is related to the changeset.

🤖 Claude Code Review

Verdict: Looks good. No issues found (0 critical, 0 major, 0 minor).

I checked for bugs and for compliance with CLAUDE.md:

  • src/client/GameModeSelector.ts: On compact screens, the lobby section is pinned to column 2 and spans rows 2–3 (sm:col-start-2 sm:compact:row-end-4). The Solo/Tutorial row (sm:row-start-3 sm:compact:col-span-1!) auto-places into column 1, so it sits under the hero card. When there is no hero slot, the old full-width layout stays. Removing the max-height:700px rule correctly brings back both teams and special cards in their row-start-2/row-start-3 slots inside the section grid.
  • src/client/components/DesktopNavBar.ts: compact:[zoom:0.75] sits on the inner <nav>, which is lg-only, so the sticky host offset is unaffected and phones are unchanged.
  • No new user-visible text, so no i18n changes are needed. No engine packages are touched.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Keep both lobby cards legible on short compact screens.

At a viewport around 900×400 with a hero slot, row 2 is only 160px tall. Row 3 adds 56px, but the heading and grid gaps leave roughly 80px per secondary card. Each card clips its contents, so the player-count badge and labels overlap the top pill. Let the compact lobby area grow to a minimum card height and allow the page to scroll rather than fitting both cards into the fixed-height rows. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
