NodeProfile::from_env() read any value other than production or sandbox as development. Production, prod or production (trailing space) therefore booted the permissive profile — stub trust ports allowed, ALLOW_UNSIGNED_PLUGINS=true honoured — with nothing said.
Now:
unset or empty: development, unchanged (the documented default; an empty value is a blanked template variable);
anything else: the node refuses to start, and the error quotes the value so a stray space is visible.
from_env() returns a Result, built on NodeProfile::parse(Option<&str>), which takes the raw value so it is tested without touching the process environment. A value that is not valid UTF-8 is refused too, where it used to be read as unset. dpp-node and dpp-vault propagate the error with context; both call it before anything is served.
Not changed
An unset NODE_PROFILE still means development. The runbook's guidance depends on it and it is a separate decision.
a_misspelled_profile_is_refused_and_named: eight spellings, each refused, the value in the message. Seen to fail with the refusal arm replaced by Ok(Development).
just check green locally (run without a pipe, exit 0).
The two binaries' ? on the new Result is checked by the compiler; there is no process-level test that boots a node with a bad value.
Breaking
A deployment that sets NODE_PROFILE to anything outside the three words must fix the spelling or unset it. Recorded under Breaking in the changelog. There are no production users yet.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Configuration
NODE_PROFILE now accepts only development, sandbox, or production. Any other nonempty value causes the node to stop with an error identifying the invalid value.
Unset or empty values continue to select development. Update misspelled or unsupported values, or unset the variable, to avoid startup errors.
Documentation
Updated developer and production guidance to describe the accepted values and startup behavior.
NODE_PROFILE now accepts only development, sandbox, or production. Unset and empty values still select development; other values return an error. Both startup callers propagate the error, and the changelog and operational guides document the validation.

Summary
Profile parsing and validation crates/dpp-types/src/trust.rs, CHANGELOG.md
NodeProfile::parse and NodeProfile::from_env reject values other than the three exact profile names. Unset and empty values select Development. Tests cover accepted values, defaults, and rejected spellings. The changelog documents the validation and migration guidance.
Startup error propagation and guidance crates/dpp-node/src/main.rs, crates/dpp-vault/src/main.rs, docs/guides/DEVELOPER-GUIDE.md, docs/ops/PRODUCTION-RUNBOOK.md
Both startup callers add Invalid NODE_PROFILE context to parsing errors. The developer guide and production runbook document the accepted values and startup behavior.
Strict profile validation works, but the guides should clarify that an empty value still selects development. Add environment-path tests to protect rejection of unsupported and non-Unicode values. Remaining concerns are bounded documentation and coverage gaps, not demonstrated startup failures.

The changed files and commit introduce no ADR reference, non-public repository name or path, pricing or contract terms, vendor lead time or negotiation status, or real company/individual in a non-public arrangement. The PR description contains only public project and issue references. The quote mentions refer to error-message quoting, not commercial terms.

Explanation
Issue #540 requires exact parsing, the unchanged unset and empty defaults, an error naming NODE_PROFILE with the received value and accepted values, testable raw-value parsing, startup rejection in both binaries, and updates to .env.example, the developer guide, the production runbook, and the NodeProfile doc comment. The diff implements the parser and error, updates both binaries, adds parser tests, and updates the latter three documents and the doc comment. It does not update .env.example, which contains no NODE_PROFILE guidance. It also adds no process-level startup test for the required bad-value behavior in dpp-node and dpp-vault.
Resolution
Add NODE_PROFILE guidance to .env.example and add automated startup tests that set an invalid value and verify both dpp-node and dpp-vault fail before serving.

Add a test that pins the NODE_PROFILE environment path.
The new tests call only NodeProfile::parse (crates/dpp-types/src/trust.rs:309-311). No test calls NodeProfile::from_env, and no test sets NODE_PROFILE. The NotUnicode arm of from_env (crates/dpp-types/src/trust.rs:117-124) is also untested. A change that maps an unsupported or non-Unicode value back to Development would pass the current suite.
The current mapping is correct. This is an uncovered regression, not a present startup failure.
The path instruction for crates/**/*.rs requires a committed #[test] that pins changed behaviour. The parse tests cover the profile rules. They do not cover the environment read or the non-Unicode refusal, so this requirement is only partly met.
Do not set NODE_PROFILE in the test process. cargo test runs tests on shared threads, so two tests that change the same variable can race. dpp-types does not declare serial_test.
Run the environment check in a child process instead. The parent test starts the test binary with Command::env("NODE_PROFILE", ...). The child calls from_env and reports the result, and the parent asserts it. This leaves the parent environment unchanged. Cover the valid, unsupported, and non-Unicode cases. The harness design is left to the author.

Review comment at @crates/dpp-types/src/trust.rs around lines 309 - 311:
Extend the NodeProfile tests to exercise the from_env environment-reading path,
which the current parse-only tests do not cover. Use a child-process test
harness to set NODE_PROFILE without changing the parent test process, and assert
the outcomes for valid, unsupported, and non-Unicode values.
Pin the full UnknownProfile message in the rejected-spelling test.
The current message contains NODE_PROFILE=, `development`, `sandbox`, and `production`, so the production behavior is correct. The loop at trust.rs:331-332 checks only the quoted bad value and `production`. A change that drops the variable name, development, or sandbox would still pass. The test name a_misspelled_profile_is_refused_and_named describes the naming, but the assertions do not check it.

Document that an empty NODE_PROFILE starts as development.
The new runbook sentence at docs/ops/PRODUCTION-RUNBOOK.md:122 says any value not exactly development, sandbox or production stops boot. An empty value is accepted as development, so the sentence is inaccurate for that case. Add the empty-value exception to the sentence.
