chore: deprecate renderNs() and processInner() ahead of 7.0 - #656
Conversation
7.0 makes both methods private on C14nCanonicalization and ExclusiveCanonicalization. Mark them @deprecated, and print a DeprecationWarning when one is called from outside process() or overridden in a subclass. process() keeps calling them, so an override still takes effect in 6.x. Review comments at @src/utils.ts:
- Line 645: Update the `process()` cleanup around `canonicalizationsInProcess`
to preserve tracking while an outer call remains active: remove the instance
only when this invocation added it, or track nested-call depth, so an inner
`process()` call cannot trigger a false deprecation warning during the outer
call.

A subclass that called process() from inside process() left the instance looking as if it were outside process() once the inner call returned, so the outer call's next processInner() printed the deprecation warning for a caller that used neither deprecated method. Refs #618.
7.0 makes
renderNs()andprocessInner()private onC14nCanonicalizationandExclusiveCanonicalization, and drops the prefix-name fallback that #615 kept for callers of the oldrenderNs()signature. Nothing in 6.x says so:renderNs()carries only@api private, and both methods are in the published types. This PR is the 6.x deprecation that has to come first.@deprecatedon both methods of both classes, namingprocess()as the replacement.DeprecationWarning,XML_CRYPTO_CANONICALIZATION_INTERNALS, once per process, when either method is called from outsideprocess(), or when a subclass overrides one.Nothing changes for a caller of
process(), and no output changes.How the warning tells an outside caller from the library
process()has to keep callingthis.renderNs()andthis.processInner(): routing it through private copies would stop a subclass's override from taking effect, which is a behavior change in a minor. So the methods can't warn on every call. Instead:process()records that it is running for the instance, and the two methods warn only when it isn't. That is a direct call from outside. Aprocess()call nested inside another on the same instance leaves the outer call's record in place, so a subclass that callsprocess()from one of its own methods gets no warning for that.process()warns when the instance'srenderNsorprocessInneris not the class's own. That is an override, and it is detected whether or not the override callssuper.The four internal call sites in each class carry
eslint-disable-next-line deprecation/deprecation, as the internal call insigned-xml.tsdoes. They go away with the tag in 7.0.Tests
The warning has no test, like the other deprecations. Five tests pin what 6.x still has to honor until the methods go private, two for each class and one more for
C14nCanonicalization:processInner()called directly returns whatprocess()returns.process()uses a subclass's override ofrenderNs().process()returns the same canonical form when a subclass calls it again from inside it.Checks
npm run build && npm test && npm run lintpass (555 tests).process()on all four canonicalization classes prints nothing. A directprocessInner()call prints the warning, and so doesprocess()on a subclass that overridesrenderNs(). A subclass that overrides onlyrenderAttrs()and callsprocess()from it prints nothing; before the nested-call fix it printed the warning.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
Summary by CodeRabbit
renderNs()andprocessInner()are deprecated and scheduled to become private in version 7.0. Useprocess()instead.
