Adds get_chat_settings(), update_chat_settings(body) and reset_chat_settings() to Index. They call GET, PATCH and DELETE on /indexes/{uid}/settings/chat.

API documentation: https://www.meilisearch.com/docs/reference/api/settings/get-chat

Related issue: #1288

Changes:

  • A chat path in config.py.
  • Three Index methods and code samples.
  • Four tests in tests/settings/test_settings_chat_meilisearch.py.
  • A fixture that restores the previous chatCompletions flag value after testing.

Local test results (run on October 18 and re-run on October 19, same results):

  • Four new tests passed against Meilisearch 1.55.0 Community. All four failed on unmodified main with AttributeError for the missing methods.
  • Full suite: 390 passed, 5 skipped, 2 failed. Both failures were inlineRule tests requiring Enterprise Edition and failed the same way on unmodified main.
  • ruff and mypy passed on Python 3.10.12.
  • Other Python versions, tox and CI were not run.

AI disclosure: An AI assistant prepared the implementation, tests and this description, and ran the local checks reported above.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for retrieving, updating, and resetting chat settings for an index. Updates can configure a chat description, document template, template size limit, and search result limit.
    • Added a Meilisearch example demonstrating how to retrieve chat settings, update them with a description, document template, 400-byte template limit, and search limit of 5, and reset them. The example enables the chatCompletions experimental feature before updating settings.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to a01bb

This change adds index methods to get, update, and reset chat settings, along with examples and tests. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 251b2

The new methods reuse the existing index routing, credentials, HTTP transport, and asynchronous task model. No new privilege escalation or alternate service destination was identified. Server-side authorization and concurrent-update guarantees remain unverified, and the tests temporarily change a server-wide feature flag.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The intended production mutation scope is the selected index on the configured Meilisearch service. Effective access still depends on the configured identity and remote authorization. The test feature toggle has broader server-level scope than the index settings it enables.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — No introduced privilege-escalation or alternate-destination attack path was identified in the inspected wrappers. Caller-controlled settings enter the existing authenticated transport as request data, rather than selecting new credentials or a new service. This does not establish the security of remote processing.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — Authorization, settings-schema validation, feature enforcement, and task application remain across the SDK-to-server trust boundary. The new methods add no local enforcement for those controls; the server implementation needed to verify them is outside the inspected evidence.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The new feature fixture restores its snapshot after ordinary test execution but has no locking, cleanup retry, or process-interruption recovery. Its exposure is bounded by the existing privileged test harness, which already deletes all indexes on the configured instance. The default endpoint is localhost, but an environment variable can redirect it; exclusive test-instance ownership is therefore an operational assumption, not a verified guarantee.

Hi @imranrkhan13, and thanks for your interest 🙌

Can you open a single PR to implement all features related to the chats API?

Take a look at how it was implemented in the JS SDK: meilisearch/meilisearch-js#1988

Closing this in the meantime.
