What & why

GitHub's macOS pool is the org's scarcest, and PRs queue on it. The macOS test leg now runs on runs-on: getmac, and PRs skip the osx-arm64 CLI build, whose only consumer, the macOS app build, PRs already skip. Pushes to main and tags still build both on macos-latest: GetMac VMs cannot resolve GitHub's results service, so cache and artifacts fail there, and those builds hand their binaries on as artifacts.

Where to look

GetMac VMs start jobs with TMPDIR empty, which crashes dotnet's first named mutex. The new step sets /private/tmp only when it is empty: the suite's socket paths need a short, symlink-free root, so not runner.temp. A macOS-only AOT publish break now shows up on main rather than on the PR.

Verification

On GetMac: 22,298 tests passed, 123 skipped, in 7m 17s. Cache restore and the report upload fail with ENOTFOUND; the upload is continue-on-error, so the job stays green without reports.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Updated macOS build and test configuration, including a fallback temporary directory when none is set and revised runner selection.
    • Apple Silicon CLI builds run on pushes and are omitted from pull-request builds.

Signed and release jobs stay on macos-latest: they load Apple signing and release
secrets, and GetMac is a third-party runner with no documented secret handling.

📝 Walkthrough

The CI configuration uses GetMac for the macOS test matrix, sets TMPDIR to /private/tmp when it is empty, and changes when the CLI runtime identifier list includes osx-arm64.

Changes: CI workflow updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
macOS test runner
.github/workflows/ci.yml, .github/actionlint.yaml
The test matrix replaces macos-latest with getmac. A macOS-only step sets TMPDIR to /private/tmp when TMPDIR is empty. The actionlint configuration assigns the getmac label to self-hosted-runner.
CLI runtime identifiers
.github/workflows/ci.yml
The CLI runtime identifier expression includes osx-arm64 on pushes and omits it on pull requests. The desktop job’s explanatory comment is removed.

Move macOS PR tests to GetMac and skip unused macOS builds

⚙️ Configuration changes 🕐 10-20 Minutes

AI Description

• Run macOS tests on GetMac to reduce contention for GitHub-hosted macOS runners.
• Set a short, symlink-free TMPDIR when GetMac leaves it empty so dotnet tests can start.
• Skip macOS CLI and app builds on PRs; retain both on pushes for artifact consumers.

High-Level Assessment

Keep the split: GetMac can run the tests, while artifact-producing macOS builds need GitHub-hosted runners. Skipping both builds on PRs preserves their CLI-to-app dependency without consuming a macOS runner for an unused artifact.

Route macOS tests to GetMac and limit macOS builds to pushes

• Changes the macOS test matrix leg to GetMac and supplies /private/tmp only when TMPDIR is empty. PRs omit osx-arm64 from the CLI build, matching the existing desktop exclusion; pushes continue both macOS builds on GitHub-hosted runners.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🔵 Trivial

Preserve diagnostics when GetMac cannot upload artifacts.

The PR reports ENOTFOUND for the artifact upload. continue-on-error: true keeps the job green but drops all per-test reports for this leg. Provide a reachable fallback or add a visible job-summary warning when the GetMac upload is unavailable.

The PR objective reports this failure.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Harden checkout before using the third-party runner.

The new getmac leg executes pull-request code on a third-party runner. actions/checkout@v7 persists GITHUB_TOKEN in .git/config by default, and the workflow relies on default token permissions. Test code can read the persisted token. Pin checkout to a reviewed commit SHA, set persist-credentials: false, and declare the smallest permissions required by checkout and artifact upload.

The zizmor diagnostics and PR objective support this finding.

Suggested checkout hardening
- - uses: actions/checkout@v7
+ - uses: actions/checkout@<reviewed-full-commit-sha> # v7
+ with:
+ persist-credentials: false
