Nothing in the recipe removed /var/lib/apt/lists, so every full archive and the rootfs.ext4 image carried the uncompressed Packages index and the English translations, about 88 MB on trixie. The indexes only disappeared from the final cpio because crush.sh wipes /var. The clean step could not drop them either, as the initramfs step still runs apt-get download against them inside the image. Configure apt right after debootstrap to skip translations and store the indexes compressed, which is what the Debian container images do, and remove the indexes in the clean step before the archives and the image are created. The initramfs script now fetches its own index, about 21 MB on disk, and removes it again once apt is no longer needed. The later purge and autoremove steps work without an index. Validated with a trixie amd64 build: the full archives contain an empty /var/lib/apt/lists and the initramfs step completes. Signed-off-by: Denys Fedoryshchenko <denys.f@collabora.com>
