Change service visibility on the host task - #1205
removeService() hides a service with ble_gatts_svc_set_visibility() from whatever task the application calls it on. That function moves the service's attributes between ble_att_svr_list and ble_att_svr_hidden_list with no lock, while the host task walks ble_att_svr_list to answer ATT requests (ble_att_svr_find_by_handle(), ble_att_svr_find_by_uuid(), the Find Information and Read By Type responses). A walk that meets an entry mid-move can follow its ha_next into the other list. This is the race raised in the #1202 review; as noted there, ble_hs_lock() is not available here, and a lock taken only by the writer would not stop the host-side readers.
This change runs the visibility change on the host task instead, so the move and the walks never overlap:
NimBLEServer::setServiceVisibility() posts the call to the host's default event queue and waits on a semaphore for it. The semaphore is counting, so a host that runs the event before the caller starts waiting is not missed.
On the host task itself (a callback calling removeService()), and before sync, it calls ble_gatts_svc_set_visibility() directly as before.
NimBLEDevice::host_task() records its task id for that check.
NimBLEDevice::deinit() marks the host as stopping before nimble_port_stop(), and the request is queued under the same lock only while it is not. nimble_port_run() never runs what is queued after its stop event, so a request is either ahead of the stop and runs, or is refused with BLE_HS_EOS.
removeService() goes through it. No public API changes.
The wait has no timeout, like the other host waits in the library (NimBLEUtils::taskWait(…, BLE_NPL_TIME_FOREVER)). It can deadlock only if the caller holds a lock that a callback running on the host task is waiting for.
If #1202 lands, its two new calls (the re-hide in start() and the show in addService()) should go through the same function; whichever merges second can switch them.
Testing:
ESP32-S3 peripheral that hides and shows services on state changes, macOS (CoreBluetooth) central, with this change applied on top of a fork branch that also carries Show a hidden service to connected centrals and announce the change #1202 and routes its calls through the new function. Arm and disarm over BLE with the services hidden and shown: both completed, no crash, before and after the stop guard.
Built against this base commit; not run on hardware at this base.
Not tested: the race itself, which never showed on the bench; non-ESP32 ports.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved reliability when changing a service’s visibility during removal. Visibility updates are now handled safely across different execution contexts, and failures are reported to the caller. Requests made while the host is stopping also receive an error instead of proceeding, helping callers identify when an update could not be completed.
ble_gatts_svc_set_visibility() relinks a service's attributes between the
host's attribute lists without ble_hs_lock(), while the host task walks
the same list to answer ATT requests. removeService() called it from the
application task. It now runs on the host task: a caller on another task
posts it to the host's event queue and waits; the host task itself, and
any caller before sync, call it directly.

Walkthrough
Arrr, NimBLE tracks the host task and its stopping state. Service visibility changes run directly or through a queued host-task event, and the caller receives the operation’s result.
Arrr, NimBLEDevice records the host task while nimble_port_run() is active. Deinitialization marks the host as stopping and clears that state if stopping fails.
Service visibility scheduling src/NimBLEServer.h, src/NimBLEServer.cpp
Arrr, removeService uses setServiceVisibility. The method applies changes directly before host synchronization or on the host task. Otherwise, it queues the request and waits for its result. Semaphore initialization failure returns BLE_HS_ENOMEM; a stopping host returns BLE_HS_EOS.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 063c1
Service visibility changes now run on the host task, and a shutdown no longer leaves a caller waiting indefinitely. The only remaining gap is that a service removal racing with a shutdown can be silently ignored. This is a narrow edge case and does not block merging.

nimble_port_run() runs queued events only up to its stop event, and
deinit() cleared m_synced only after nimble_port_stop() returned, so a
removeService() racing deinit() could queue its event behind the stop and
wait forever. deinit() now marks the host as stopping before the stop is
queued; setServiceVisibility() checks the mark and queues under the same
lock, so its event runs before the stop or is refused with BLE_HS_EOS.
The event handler is now a named, documented function.
