Add Characteristic Aggregate Format Descriptor (0x2905) support for Peripheral device - #1054
This PR adds full support for the Characteristic Aggregate Format Descriptor (UUID 0x2905) when operating as a BLE peripheral.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Empty Aggregate Format descriptors are now populated when the server starts with the handles of nonzero Presentation Format descriptors on the same characteristic. Characteristics without registered handles, without an Aggregate Format descriptor, or with an already populated Aggregate Format descriptor are left unchanged. This ensures connected devices can access the available presentation format information.
This looks really good, only issue I have is the changes to the core files. This would make the api incompatible with the esp-idf version of NimBLE, maybe there's another way.
@h2zero I don’t have much experience with ESP-IDF yet. Could you provide more details about the issue so I can explore alternative ways to address it?
Honestly, I was hesitant to modify ble_gatts directly, since changes are introduced there from time to time. At the moment, the approach I took felt like the most straightforward way to fix the problem.
I try to avoid modifying the stack code unless it's to address something that won't break the API with the esp-idf repo. I maintain a separate cpp wrapper for esp-idf: https://github.com/h2zero/esp-nimble-cpp since the NimBLE stack is included already in esp-idf, whereas in this repo it is provided.
So in this case the 2905 class would not work with esp-idf as it would not have those core changes that are needed and the API would no longer be the same for both repos.

Walkthrough
Arr, NimBLEServer::start() now fills eligible empty 0x2905 descriptors with nonzero 0x2904 descriptor handles after GATT registration.
After GATT registration, startup skips services and characteristics with zero handles. For each remaining characteristic, it fills an empty 0x2905 descriptor with nonzero handles from its 0x2904 descriptors. Existing nonempty values remain unchanged, matey.
h2zero/NimBLE-Arduino#1202: Arr, changes when hidden services receive handles, which relates to this change’s use of descriptor handles after GATT registration.

BLE clients can receive an empty, stale, or incomplete aggregate handle list when descriptors are hidden, GATT is rebuilt, or the configured value capacity is too small.

Arrr, make the configured range and error message agree.
The guard accepts values through 255, but the #error says the maximum be 128. Thus configurations from 129 through 255 compile while contradicting the diagnostic. Update the message to 255, or tighten the condition to > 128 if that be the intended limit.

On CodeRabbit's second point (a deleted 0x2904 still in the aggregate), I'd like to fix it, and found a second defect next to it.
Dangling pointer.m_vAggregatedDescriptors holds raw 0x2904 pointers. Deleting one (removeDescriptor(d, true), or deleting its characteristic or service) frees it in resetGATT(), and initValue() then calls getHandle() on freed memory at start().
Stale handles after a reset.initValue() clears the list after the first start(), so every later start() sees an empty list and leaves the old value. When a reset moves handles (a deleted service or characteristic before this one), the 0x2905 value keeps pointing at the old ones.
Proposed fix: the aggregate stores descriptor IDs instead of pointers, and resolves them against the live tree on every start().
NimBLEDescriptor gets a private m_id from a counter, assigned at construction.
NimBLE2905 stores std::vector<uint32_t> ids in add2904Descriptor() order.
start() collects the live descriptors once and passes them to initValue(), which looks each id up there. A deleted descriptor is simply absent, a new one allocated at a freed address has a different id, and a hidden one has handle 0 and is skipped as before.
The list is no longer cleared, and the value is set on every start(), empty included.
No public API change, no hooks in the delete paths, +4 bytes per descriptor. It compiles on top of this branch; I couldn't run it end to end yet because my application's BLE layer doesn't build against the current master (the characteristic callback signatures changed).
feat/aggregate-format-2905 is the branch of h2zero/NimBLE-Arduino#1054,
which upstream rebased onto a master whose characteristic callbacks blex
does not build against. avionix carries the 0x2905 commit blex was built
on, plus the hidden-service fix of #1202.
@srgg, I have updated this, removed the extra class and files and just set the value instead unless already set by the app. Please let me know if there are any issues with it.

Thanks, dropping the stored pointers removes the dangling-pointer case entirely. Two things in the new version:
The value is filled once.start() skips a 0x2905 whose value is not empty, so after the first start() it is never recomputed. A later reset that moves handles (a service or characteristic deleted ahead of this one), or a 0x2904 removed or hidden afterwards, leaves the 0x2905 listing the old handles.
One way to keep "an app-supplied value wins": remember that the value was auto-filled, refill it on every start() while that is so, and include hidden services in the pass (their handles are valid while they stay registered).
Minor: if the app gives the 0x2905 a maxLen smaller than two bytes per 0x2904, append() logs val > max and the list is cut short.
Correction to point 2: a service cannot be hidden at the first start() — removeService() returns early while the service has no handle yet. The real case is narrower: a characteristic with a 0x2905 added to a service that is already hidden, a reset while it stays hidden (the pass skips it), then a show in place (#1202) leaves that 0x2905 empty. Otherwise a hidden service's 0x2905 is just not refreshed, which point 1 already covers.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
I feel like there's one more case to consider. Currently start() fills a 0x2905 descriptor only if its value is empty, but resetGATT() doesn't clear it
If a service, characteristic, or descriptor before the characteristic is deleted, the handles after it shift on reset. On the next start(), the 0x2905 descriptor still has its old value, so it gets skipped and keeps referencing outdated 0x2904 handles. The same issue occurs if one of the characteristic's own 0x2904 descriptors is deleted.
Maybe we could track which 0x2905 values were auto-generated and clear only those in resetGATT(). That way, the next start() would rebuild them with the correct handles without affecting values the application explicitly set.

NimBLE master returns NimBLEGattStatus from onRead/onWrite, hands onWrite
the value before storing it, takes callbacks by reference and drops
NimBLE2905; start() fills an empty 0x2905 instead. Write handlers read
the passed value, since getValue() still holds the previous write.
avionix-next is h2zero/NimBLE-Arduino#1054 plus the hidden-service fix
(#1202).
Maybe we should just override the app set value for now, I can't see any reason the app would set this itself and it could always do so after start() if desired.
