Description

Fixes #306.

An incorrectly sized waveform table was sent to the device even though the upload protocol requires 512 high-resolution and 32 low-resolution values. Non-real or NaN values could also fail conversion after the command had already started.

Validate the shared upload boundary before changing channel state or writing commands. Require a one-dimensional, 512-value table of finite real voltages. Custom function results go through the same check, and their waveform mode is committed only after validation. Valid tables keep the existing voltage clipping and serialization.

Validation

  • 44 waveform tests passed: direct/function-generated malformed tables leave both device calls and channel state untouched; SI1/SI2 valid float/integer/object uploads retain exact framing, clipping and input preservation; built-in sine/triangle functions remain supported.
  • The new tests reproduce 34 failures on unchanged main; six valid-upload controls pass there.
  • Current-branch hardware-independent tests: 62 passed, including the existing Pico SCPI transport suite.
  • Compatibility with the five earlier contribution patches: 109 tests passed, plus seven CLI accumulator cases passed in the combined checkout.
  • Changed-file Black, Flake8, Bandit and pydocstyle pass. Wheel/source distribution build successfully with the existing Flit backend.
  • Sphinx documentation builds successfully: the fresh baseline and initial fix each had seven warnings; the later fresh build has seven warnings, matching the fresh baseline.

No physical PSLab is connected, so the hardware integration suite and live firmware behavior have not been certified. The tests inspect the actual command calls through a mocked ConnectionHandler. No dependencies or protocol framing changed for valid inputs.

Implemented and tested with Codex assistance.

Review follow-up: native real arrays retain their dtype; object/string arrays are converted to real floats before finiteness checks. Unsupported values now raise the documented ValueError before device writes or state changes. Eight added cases reproduced the initial PR defect and pass after the fix.

Boolean-dtype tables are explicitly rejected too: the existing channel setter cannot serialize them consistently. Direct and function-generated Boolean regressions confirm ValueError occurs before state changes or device calls.

Object-array follow-up: reject Python bool and NumPy bool_ elements before converting an object array to floats. Four added cases (direct/function-generated, all-Boolean/mixed object arrays) fail on the previous PR head and pass after the fix; valid numeric object arrays still pass.

Summary by Sourcery

Validate waveform tables at the upload boundary before modifying channel state or communicating with the device.

Bug Fixes:

  • Validate waveform uploads before device commands or channel state changes, rejecting malformed, non-finite, complex, and boolean tables.
  • Apply the same validation to custom and built-in waveform function results while preserving valid upload behavior and waveform mode updates.

Enhancements:

  • Document waveform table validation requirements and errors.

Tests:

  • Add hardware-independent coverage for invalid tables, state and device-call isolation, valid upload framing, clipping, input preservation, and built-in waveform support.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Waveform uploads now reject inputs that are not one-dimensional, contain anything other than 512 finite real values, or use unsupported formats. Invalid inputs are rejected before they can affect device settings or trigger an upload.
    • Valid custom waveforms retain their input values and are uploaded with the expected command format.
  • Documentation
    • Waveform input requirements are now clearly specified.

October 31 source-audit repair: reject complex-valued elements inside object arrays before float conversion can silently discard their imaginary components. Two new input representations (NumPy complex scalar and zero-dimensional complex array), through both table and custom-function loaders, fail on the prior head and pass after b34a78f. The checks assert no device calls or channel-state changes. Independent review also exercised zero-imaginary complex values and valid real/numeric-string object controls. Current 62 software-only tests, Black/Flake8/Bandit/pydocstyle, wheel/source build and Sphinx build pass (seven documentation warnings). Focused waveform-module line coverage increased from 35% to 38%; this is not full-project or hardware coverage. AI-assisted diagnosis, implementation and independent review.

Reviewer's Guide

Waveform uploads now validate a one-dimensional 512-value table of finite real voltages before changing channel state or writing to the device. Function-generated uploads use the same boundary, while valid uploads retain existing clipping, serialization, protocol framing, and built-in waveform behavior.

Walkthrough

Waveform table loading rejects invalid dimensions, non-real values, and non-finite values before changing channel state or sending device commands. Tests cover invalid inputs, valid uploads, and built-in sine and triangle waveforms.

Changes: Waveform table validation

load_function passes the waveform mode to _load_table. _load_table validates that a table is one-dimensional and contains exactly 512 finite real values before changing channel state or writing to the device. Tests cover rejected inputs, valid upload framing and state, and built-in waveform uploads.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to b34a7

No actionable merge-blocking issue is established by the supplied evidence. The change appears ready to merge subject to normal checks.

Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 9ea22

The change rejects malformed waveform tables before changing channel state or starting an upload. Valid inputs retain the existing voltage limits, device commands, and channel authority. No material security risk introduced or worsened by this PR was identified; physical-device behavior remains unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed upload path remains bounded to the supplied device connection and its existing SI1/SI2 channel selection. Tightening accepted waveform data does not introduce a new device target, privilege, or command family. Exposure through external applications is not established by repository-local evidence.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Caller-supplied tables and custom-function results pass through the same shape, conversion, and finiteness controls before library-managed channel mutation or device commands. This strengthens the data-to-device boundary; it does not sandbox the caller-supplied function, which still executes before result validation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Channel state and device acceptance remain non-atomic: local table and mode are committed before transmission and acknowledgement, with no rollback in the uploader. Write or acknowledgement failures can therefore leave local state ahead of device state. The merge base has the same ordering, so this is pre-existing behavior, not a PR-introduced concern.

Explanation

The changes satisfy issue [#306]. _load_table validates one-dimensional 512-value tables containing finite real values before device writes. It rejects malformed, non-finite, complex, boolean, and unsupported values with ValueError. load_function uses the same validation path and commits waveform mode only after validation. Tests cover state preservation, zero device calls, valid 512/32 framing, clipping, input preservation, and built-in functions.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 25.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 4 functions across 2 files.

<issue_to_address>
**Object tables fail validation inconsistently**

When a 512-element table or custom-function result has a string or object dtype, `np.isfinite(points)` raises `TypeError` instead of the documented `ValueError` for unsupported values; it also rejects object arrays containing finite real values, so callers get the wrong exception and cannot upload those tables.

Safely convert supported real-valued inputs before checking finiteness, and raise `ValueError` for inputs that cannot be converted to real values.

Also at `pslab/instrument/waveform_generator.py:310`.

The source audit found an additional object-array case: NumPy complex scalars and zero-dimensional complex arrays could be converted to real floats with a warning and then uploaded. Fixed in b34a78f by rejecting complex-valued object elements before conversion. Four new table/function regressions fail the previous head and pass on the fix, asserting no device calls or channel-state changes. All 62 hardware-independent tests pass; Black, Flake8, Bandit, pydocstyle and package builds pass. Sphinx builds with seven warnings. No physical hardware or firmware run is claimed. AI-assisted implementation and independent source/test review.
