Mastodon sends FEP-7aa9 FeatureRequest activities without an actor, so Fedify answered them with 400 Missing actor before any listener ran. Instead of another type-specific exception, the inbox now records who it authenticated independently of actor, and lets listeners decide what that authorizes. #1291 explored a FeatureRequest bridge; its review threads informed this implementation and its regression tests.

Fixes #1289 and #1290.

Bind authentication to the parsed activity

InboxContext.authentication lists the HTTP request signers and the LDS/OIP document signers separately, so a relay's HTTP signature never stands in for the author of a forwarded document. Principals come only from the verification attempt that produced the dispatched activity, not from observation records. Verification that succeeds without verifying any proof authenticates nobody. isActorAuthenticated() does the comparison, matching FEP-ef61 portable IDs canonically.

Reloading remote contexts between parses could make verification and dispatch interpret the same document differently. A request-scoped context snapshot now memoizes every context response, so verification, dispatch, and the expanded view exposed to listeners agree. The snapshot travels inside the queued message, so workers and retries replay the same interpretation without loading contexts again; an expanded-view digest guards the replay. Storing it externally was rejected because its lifetime would not follow the message.

Typed parsing drops anonymous and blank-node values, so the inbox checks the expanded view to decide whether actor is absent: an actor that ID accessors cannot read still counts as declared and never falls back to a principal.

Opt-in per listener

Actorless activities reach only listeners registered with allowActorless, and only with an authenticated principal sharing the activity ID's origin. Existing listeners assume an authenticated actor; delivering actorless Undo or Delete to them could let any signer act on objects they match only by object.

Authorization in featureInteraction

featureInteraction.verifyRequest() takes ctx.authentication and checks that the request matches the one Fedify authenticated, including every actor, object, and instrument value. The collection is always fetched from its ID, through an internal lookupObject() observer that sees the candidate actually returned, so web collections keep their origin check and portable ones their proof policy. Its owner is the single attributedTo value of that document. Embedded collections are no longer trusted, since anyone could attribute someone else's collection to themselves.

Queue size

Inlining the snapshot grows messages, so MessageQueue.maxMessageSize lets the inbox process an oversized activity in-request instead of losing it. The check uses a conservative estimate chosen to exceed Deno KV's structured serialization size. Workers now use the configured idempotency strategy, so in-request and queued processing share records; older worker records are still honored.

Mastodon sends FEP-7aa9 FeatureRequest activities without an actor, so
Fedify rejected them with 400 Missing actor before any listener ran.
Rather than adding another activity-specific exception, the inbox now
records who it authenticated independently of the declared actor, and
binds that evidence to the exact JSON-LD interpretation it verified.

Inbox and queue:

- Every JSON-LD processing step of a delivery goes through a
request-scoped context snapshot, so a mutable remote context cannot
give verification and dispatch different meanings. The snapshot is
stored in queued inbox messages, and workers and retries replay it
without loading contexts again; an expanded-view digest guards it.
- InboxContext.authentication exposes the HTTP request signers, the
LDS/OIP document signers (all proofs, DID authorities for portable
actors), and the expanded activity. isActorAuthenticated() compares
  actors, canonicalizing FEP-ef61 portable IDs.
- InboxListenerSetters.on() takes an allowActorless option. An
activity that declares no actor at all reaches such a listener only
if a principal was authenticated and its ID shares that principal's
origin. Anonymous or blank-node actors still count as declared.
A successful verification of zero proofs is not authentication, and
an owner's proof is preferred to a relay's Linked Data Signature.
- Context.routeActivity() provides evidence too, and dispatches the
  object it verified or fetched.
- MessageQueue.maxMessageSize lets the inbox process an activity
in-request when its message would not fit the queue; Deno KV
declares it. Queue workers now honor the idempotency strategy.
- A key whose owner document cannot be fetched for now is reported
as a retryable key fetch failure, so that an outage does not let a
relay's signature supersede an author's proof.

featureInteraction.verifyRequest() always fetches the featured
collection from its ID (web origin or FEP-ef61 proof policy, exactly
one attributedTo counted on the expanded document), never trusting an
embedded collection, and binds the request to the authenticated
interpretation. A request without an actor is accepted only when the
collection owner was authenticated. lookupObject() gains an internal
observer that reports the candidate actually returned.

No actionable issue remains in the reviewed changes; the PR is mergeable after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 123f1

Actorless handling remains opt-in, and FeatureRequest verification checks the authenticated owner of the authoritative collection. The main remaining risk is upgrade and rollback compatibility: older workers reject newly admitted actorless messages, while older queued messages cannot supply the new authentication evidence.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: Authentication-dependent inbox workflows need coordinated producer, worker, and backlog transitions. A head producer can accept an actorless activity that a base worker rejects without dispatch or retry. Conversely, legacy messages processed by head workers have empty authentication evidence, so listeners newly requiring that evidence can reject previously accepted backlog. These transitions fail closed, but can lose or interrupt consent workflows during mixed-version operation or rollback; an actual deployment sequence was not supplied.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — An authenticated remote sender gains actorless reachability only to opted-in listeners. Referenced objects remain attacker-controlled inputs, so application-level exposure depends on those listeners' ownership checks. The inspected FeatureRequest verifier checks the authoritative owner; deployed tenant and asset scope was not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The inspected controls counter relay-signer substitution and embedded-owner spoofing: document principals take precedence over HTTP principals, and actorless FeatureRequests require the fetched collection owner to match authenticated evidence. These checks did not establish an introduced authorization bypass.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Successful verification of zero proofs does not authenticate an actorless activity. Worker admission independently requires verified evidence, current listener opt-in, and principal-origin matching.
  • observed — The expanded digest checks interpretation consistency, not authenticity of the serialized principal list. Queue contents remain trusted; that trust assumption and processing without worker-side signature re-verification already existed at the base. Deployed queue write permissions were not established.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Listener failure can repeat partially completed effects, and concurrent deliveries can pass separate deduplication reads before the success marker is written. This non-atomic processing pattern predates the PR; authentication-sensitive listener effects still need application-level idempotency.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define worker-first rollout, legacy-backlog handling, and drain or recovery requirements before rollback. Document that queue write authority conveys inbox-processing authority; if a deployment crosses an untrusted queue boundary, protect the complete message and principal evidence with authenticated integrity.

🚀 New features to boost your workflow:
  • 📦 JS Bundle Analysis: Save yourself from yourself by tracking and limiting bundle sizes in JS merges.

The verified view of an inbox activity serialized every context
response the delivery's snapshot had recorded for its policy, including
those loaded by other steps such as parsing key documents. Queued
messages carried responses they never needed, which also made them
reach maxMessageSize, and be processed in-request, sooner.

The view now records the URLs its own expansion requests and keeps only
those entries. The snapshot loader also drops a response's `tag`:
jsonld.js caches a context tagged "static" across operations without
asking the loader again, which would leave it out of the recorded URLs
and out of the snapshot.

The new entries referred to FEP-7aa9 without defining the link, so the
generated changelog escaped the brackets and showed them literally.
Sacho's links front matter only takes reference numbers, so the
fragments define the link in their bodies, as other FEP references
do. CHANGES.md keeps a single definition of each label, so the copy in
the 2.4.0 section gives way to the new one.
