feat: offer a remote from the profile preview menu - #1308
The profile page has a Remote button when you can message someone, but the profile preview (the hover card on names and avatars) didn't, so starting a remote meant opening the profile first. Now the card's ⋯ menu starts with Remote @handle whenever the profile would show the button, and it opens the remote with them.
Changes
The preview endpoint returns canPush with the same rule as the profile: you can message them and the remote isn't restricted or closed. It's always false for guests.
UserSafetyMenu takes canPush and puts Remote @handle above Mute and Block, with a separator. Only the preview passes it, since the profile already has its button.
After a mute, unmute, block or unblock from the preview's menu, the preview reloads its data, so it doesn't reopen with a remote, Block or Mute left over from before. Raised by CodeRabbit.
The knowledge base mentions the new place to start a remote.
Validation
Local, on 1d497bff (based on 97678785, the latest production):
composer test:lint and composer test:types pass, type coverage is 100%.
Pest passes all 5,132 tests at 100% coverage.
Every Node and .tsx unit test passes.
New tests cover canPush in the preview when they follow you or not, when they pushed to you first, for an admin, with remotes off on either side, with a block either way, and for guests, plus the menu offering the remote only when canPush is true, and the preview reloading after a mute or block from its menu. They all fail on production.
In Chrome, choosing the item opens /remotes/@demo-reader, and the card closes. After blocking from the card, reopening it shows Unblock and no remote.
Visual evidence
The preview's open ⋯ menu in Chrome (2x), production (92fb6b5f) vs this branch, signed in as a regular (non-admin) local user. demo-reader follows them; demo-stranger doesn't.
Layout shift is 0 at every viewport and theme, from page load to the open menu. Recaptured on 1d497bff after rebasing: the same menus, and still no layout shift.
Device verification
The preview only opens on devices that can hover, so there's no phone capture: on touch screens, names and avatars link straight to the profile, which already has the button. Checked in desktop Chrome only.
Independent review
A separate, read-only reviewer agent (given the task, the repo guidelines, the diff and these captures) returned CODE: PASS and VISUAL: PASS for 61ff5bbd..1e5925b1, media 5d9c9716, and again for the rebased 97678785..1d497bff, checking that the code is unchanged and that nothing new in production changes who can be messaged. It checked canPush against the conversation page's own rules for guests, yourself, blocks either way, remotes off on either side, someone who doesn't follow you, an existing conversation and admins; that the card closes when the item opens the remote; and that the reload after a block or mute refreshes the cached preview even when the page remounts. It didn't run Pest, which ran separately (above).
Profile previews now show a link to a conversation when messaging is available, based on the relationship and access settings.
After a successful mute or block action, the preview refreshes to reflect the updated relationship.
Documentation
Clarified where to find the Remote control: on a developer’s profile or in the menu on their hover card on a computer. The navigation entry remains documented.

Walkthrough
The preview response now includes canPush. The preview menu uses this value to show or hide a conversation link. Successful menu actions trigger a preview refresh. Tests cover eligibility, link rendering, and refresh behavior. The knowledge base clarifies where the Remote control is available.
The controller sets canPush to false for guests. For authenticated viewers, it checks messaging eligibility and push access. Feature tests cover follow relationships, prior pushes, admin status, remote settings, and blocking.
Render the link and refresh preview data resources/js/components/user-preview.tsx, resources/js/components/user-safety-menu.tsx, tests/Unit/FollowState.test.tsx, KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md
The preview passes canPush and a relation-change callback to the safety menu. When canPush is true, the menu renders a conversation link and separator. Successful menu actions invoke the callback, which refetches preview data. Tests cover link visibility, callbacks, and refetching. The knowledge base clarifies the Remote control’s locations.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 1d497
The documentation change is mergeable with awareness that preview relation actions may remain stale after a failed refresh and an older response may replace a newer post-block view.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 1e592
The new shortcut retains fresh server-side conversation authorization, so an outdated menu entry does not grant conversation access. Remaining uncertainty concerns stale preview state after interrupted refreshes and its lifetime across sign-in changes.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The inspected change expands navigation to an existing viewer-to-partner conversation destination, not the set of conversations the viewer is authorized to access. No additional principal or privileged execution identity is introduced along this path.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — Retaining or manipulating a true canPush value can expose the shortcut but is insufficient to bypass the inspected conversation boundary. After a block, current canMessage policy denies the destination even if refresh failure or response ordering preserves the old menu entry.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The conversation route is inside the authenticated route group. ShowConversationRequest checks canMessage and denies as not found before the controller retrieves conversation data. canMessage checks the viewer's remotes setting, self-targeting, and blocks in either direction.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The preview cache is keyed by URL rather than viewer identity. The inspected logout cleanup clears other client caches and the server invalidates the session, but these blocks do not explicitly clear the preview Map. Whether every supported sign-in transition destroys that Map remains unresolved; cross-user disclosure was not established.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Consider explicit viewer-scoped cache invalidation and latest-request guards for relation-dependent previews. These would strengthen presentation-state isolation and recovery without replacing server-side conversation authorization.

Exercise the resolved refetch and assert the updated preview.
This test never resolves fetch, and the test harness uses no-op useState setters. It only checks the request URL. Use a stateful render with a resolved PreviewData fixture, then assert that the rerendered menu uses the fixture’s relation fields and canPush.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Prevent older preview responses from replacing the refresh.
An opening fetch can remain in flight while cached data lets the viewer block the user. If the post-block fetch completes first, the older response can then overwrite both state and cache with the pre-block snapshot. The menu can show Block and Remote again.
Order or invalidate preview requests before they update state or cache.

This needs the opening request to outlast opening the menu, confirming the block, and the block's round trip, so I'd rather not add request ordering for it.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@raz-iacob Understood. The race requires the opening response to arrive after the post-block refresh. I accept your decision to leave request ordering out of this PR.
Invalidate both preview state stores when relation refresh fails.
After a successful block, a failed refresh leaves data.canPush true and preserves the cached snapshot. Clearing only cache does not hide the mounted Remote action. Updating only data does not prevent the stale action from returning when the preview reopens.
Invalidate both stores on failure. Reopening the preview can then retry the request.

@raz-iacob Understood. scheduleOpen fetches fresh data on each open, even when cached data exists, so reopening retries the failed refresh. The stale Remote action can remain until a refresh succeeds, but I respect your decision to keep the current behavior.
