  • A few minutes after a reply is approved, Tom reads the direct replies of the thread and opens a merge conflict when two people clearly take opposite sides. He reads a thread at most once an hour, leaves his own replies out, and a commit gets one conflict at most.
  • The two replies show on the commit page between git conflict markers. For 24 hours, readers accept one side; the two authors can't vote, and counts stay hidden until you pick or voting closes. Then the side with more votes is kept.
  • Hidden when a reader can't see one of the replies (block, mute), and admins can switch it off from operations, which also hides the conflicts already open.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Eligible commit discussions can display panels highlighting two clearly opposing replies.
    • Signed-in readers can choose a side during the 24-hour voting period. Votes are final, and the reply authors cannot vote.
    • Vote totals are visible to voters, reply authors, and everyone after voting closes. Panels show the outcome when voting ends.
    • Conflicts are hidden if either reply isn’t visible, and administrators can disable the feature.

Walkthrough

Adds automated detection of disagreements between approved replies and a 24-hour voting period. Eligible readers can choose a side. The change adds conflict display to commit pages, feature controls, and documentation.

Changes: Merge conflict detection and voting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Conflict and vote data
app/Enums/*, app/Models/Commit.php, app/Models/MergeConflict*.php, database/migrations/*, database/factories/MergeConflict*.php
Adds conflict and vote tables, model relationships, side and feature enums, and factory definitions.
Conflict detection and dispatch

Approved commits dispatch a delayed job. The job checks eligible replies with ConflictSpotter and creates a conflict when the result identifies two replies by different authors. Tests cover dispatch and detection conditions.
Conflict visibility and voting API
app/Queries/MergeConflictQuery.php, app/Actions/CreateMergeConflictVote.php, app/Http/Requests/CreateMergeConflictVoteRequest.php, app/Http/Controllers/MergeConflictVoteController.php, app/Http/Controllers/CommitController.php, routes/web.php, tests/Feature/Controllers/MergeConflictVoteControllerTest.php

Suggested reviewers: mnapoli, nunomaduro

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 4d522

Resolve the rollback and missed-conflict paths before merging. Readers who leave a voting page open can also see an outdated winner, while closed conflicts with no votes do not show their final counts.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 4d522

The new workflow checks reader eligibility, hides inaccessible replies, and prevents duplicate votes. A narrow deadline transition can leave displayed closed results subject to an in-flight vote. No broader access bypass or privileged action was established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: Closed results are not write-final. Deadline eligibility is checked during request authorization, but persistence neither rechecks the deadline nor conditions insertion on an authoritative acceptance time. A request authorized immediately before closure can insert afterward, and subsequent closed-result queries count that vote. Normal closed requests are rejected and duplicate votes are constrained; the remaining exposure is an in-flight transition affecting the displayed community result.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected authority is bounded to selecting existing replies for a social conflict record and recording one choice per authenticated user per conflict. The classifier path does not provide arbitrary record selection, executable output, or repository merge authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported concern is deadline finality: an eligible request may pass authorization before closure and persist afterward, changing a result displayed as closed. This requires an in-flight timing overlap; it does not establish that an author, unauthenticated reader, or reader already denied visibility can vote.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Server-side authorization checks parent visibility, both-side disclosure, and non-author/open eligibility before controller execution. Block and mute filtering is inherited from the existing commit query. Test assertions explicitly reject closed, disabled, blocked, muted, and deleted-side requests in stable states; these assertions were inspected, not executed.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Disabling the feature is a subsequent-read and authorization control, not cancellation of already-running classification or an atomic barrier around vote persistence. An in-flight detector can finish creating a record, but the query gate still hides it while the feature remains disabled.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define the authoritative ballot acceptance time and enforce it at persistence, with result aggregation honoring the same rule. Exercise a request crossing the deadline so closed-result finality is an explicit lifecycle guarantee.

Major · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win

Add a down() method for both tables.

If an operator runs migrate:rollback, Laravel skips this migration’s missing down() method but removes its migration record. Both tables remain, and the next migration attempt tries to create them again. Drop merge_conflict_votes first, then merge_conflicts, in down(). (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Skipping this one, none of the migrations in this repo have a down() method, so I'm keeping it consistent.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Refresh the conflict when voting closes.

After closes_at, the server returns the final vote counts. This component changes to Closed from useNow(), but it does not refresh mergeConflict. A reader can therefore remain on the page and see Closed without the final counts or winner.

Refresh the mergeConflict page prop when the local state becomes closed, and copy that prop into local state.
