Summary

Implements the remaining gap from #5814 (and the unfinished restart piece of #5823): training restarts restore each task's logical data-source cursor and the shared selection RNG, so the next batch matches an uninterrupted run.

Design

  • Backend-neutral payload under deepmd/dpmodel/train/data_progress.py (data_progress checkpoint key).
  • Per data source state_dict / load_state_dict:
    • LMDB: (epoch, batch_index) of the next consumed batch; identity fields (world_size, seed, nframes, batch_size) reject incompatible restarts.
    • directory/HDF5: per-system (set_count, iterator, batch_order) so restore does not re-draw the shuffle RNG.
  • Prefetch/decoder read-ahead is excluded from the cursor; seek rebuilds the sampler position without decoding.
  • Resume-capable checkpoints (include_optimizer=True) store progress; deployment/EMA snapshots omit it.
  • Missing data_progress keeps the legacy restart behaviour.

Tests

source/tests/common/dpmodel/test_data_progress.py covers mid-epoch and epoch-boundary LMDB restarts, distributed shard restore, prefetch cursor isolation, directory/HDF5 restore, multi-task independent cursors, RNG round-trip, and legacy no-op.

Checklist

  • Mid-epoch LMDB restart matches uninterrupted frame IDs
  • Epoch-boundary reshuffle preserved
  • Distributed ranks restore consistent cursors / disjoint shards
  • Directory/HDF5 restore matches coords
  • Old checkpoints without progress remain loadable

Refs #5814

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Training checkpoints now preserve data-loading progress and random-number state, allowing resumed training to continue from the saved position.
    • Progress restoration supports directory-based and LMDB datasets, multiple training tasks, and positions within an epoch. Saved sampling settings are checked against the current data source.
    • Checkpoints without saved data progress continue to start data iteration from the beginning.

Persist each task's logical data cursor and the shared selection RNG in
resume-capable checkpoints so a mid-epoch restart yields the same next
batch as an uninterrupted run for LMDB and directory/HDF5 sources.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Training checkpoints now include training-data progress when optimizer state is saved. Restart runs restore per-task data-source cursors and shared RNG state. LMDB and directory-backed sources provide state save and restore methods.

Changes

Training-data progress

Layer / File(s) Summary
Progress payload and RNG state
deepmd/dpmodel/train/data_progress.py, deepmd/utils/random.py, deepmd/dpmodel/train/__init__.py
Progress helpers collect and restore supported per-task state and shared RNG state. The training package exports the helpers.
LMDB cursor persistence
deepmd/dpmodel/utils/lmdb_data.py, deepmd/pt_expt/utils/lmdb_dataset.py, source/tests/common/dpmodel/test_data_progress.py
LMDB iterators save the next batch position independently of prefetch progress. LMDB systems verify sampling identity before restoring. Tests cover mid-epoch and boundary resumes, prefetch, ragged epochs, and distributed ranks.
Directory-data cursor persistence
deepmd/utils/data.py, deepmd/utils/data_system.py, source/tests/common/dpmodel/test_data_progress.py
Directory data saves and restores the set cursor, frame iterator, and shuffle order. The system saves per-source state and the selected source. Tests compare resumed data with uninterrupted iteration.
Trainer checkpoint integration
deepmd/pt_expt/train/training.py, source/tests/common/dpmodel/test_data_progress.py
The trainer saves progress with optimizer checkpoints and restores it for restart runs. Tests cover independent task cursors and RNG restoration.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to d34a2

Progress is currently wired into checkpoint save and restart, but no test verifies the next batch across that full round-trip. The change is mergeable with a focused trainer restart test as follow-up.

LmdbBatchSampler advances on __iter__, so after prefetch opens the next
epoch len(sampler) at wrap observes epoch+2. Capture the length when
_iter_epoch opens a non-logical epoch and apply it on wrap so ragged
mix:N resume keeps the same next batch.

Satisfy TID253 by importing deepmd.pt_expt inside the helper instead of

Add a trainer-boundary restart test for data progress.

The helper tests do not cover the trainer checkpoint boundary. A regression that omits DATA_PROGRESS_CHECKPOINT_KEY during checkpoint writing or skips restore_training_data_progress during restart can leave the current tests passing while changing the next batch.

Add this case to the trainer restart tests: save with include_optimizer=True, restart through get_trainer(..., restart_model=...), and compare the next batch with an uninterrupted run.
