What does this PR do?

Adds Playwright end-to-end smoke tests for the frontend landing-page call to action and dark/light theme toggle, including checking that the theme preference persists after reload. The tests run against Vite in a dedicated E2E mode with a test-only Logto mock and mocked or blocked network requests, so they require no Logto account, backend, database, or API keys. Adds a separate GitHub Actions workflow to run the suite and upload Playwright artifacts if it fails.

Closes #63

How we tested it?

  • cd LiveEditFronten && npm run e2e- passed, 2 tests.
  • cd LiveEditFronten && npm run build -passed; Vite reported its existing large-chunk warning.
  • Focused TypeScript check for the new Playwright and Vite configuration files-passed.
  • The full frontend TypeScript check was not clean: it reports existing errors in __tests__/example.test.tsx because Testing Library and Jest dependencies are not installed.
  • npm test was not run; the frontend does not have a configured test script.

Checklist

  • We ran the relevant tests locally (pytest in LiveEditBackend, npm test in LiveEditFronten)
  • We added or updated tests where it makes sense

This PR adds automated browser tests and CI configuration without changing the UI.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added links to sponsor the project and view its repository, including a live star count.
  • Tests
    • Added automated browser checks for the sign-in flow and theme selection, including verifying that the selected theme remains after reloading.
    • Browser tests now run automatically for pull requests and updates to the main branches. Failure reports and test results are saved for review.

- Add @playwright/test and an npm run e2e script.
- Configure Playwright to start Vite in a dedicated E2E mode.
- Mock Logto only in E2E mode; leave normal authentication unchanged.
- Stub API and GitHub requests and block other external requests in smoke tests.
- Verify the landing-page call to action and theme persistence across reloads.
- Add a GitHub Actions workflow to install Chromium, run E2E tests, and upload Playwright reports and test results on failure.
- Ignore generated Playwright report and test-result directories.

Walkthrough

The frontend adds Playwright smoke tests for the landing page and theme persistence. E2E mode uses a Logto mock and configured request interception. A GitHub Actions workflow runs the tests on pull requests and pushes to main or master.

Changes: Frontend E2E

Layer / File(s) Summary
Playwright runner and CI
LiveEditFronten/package.json, LiveEditFronten/playwright.config.ts, .github/workflows/frontend-e2e.yml, .gitignore
Adds the Playwright dependency and script, configures browser tests and artifacts, runs E2E tests in GitHub Actions, and ignores generated reports and results.
E2E app configuration
LiveEditFronten/vite.config.ts, LiveEditFronten/index.tsx, LiveEditFronten/e2e/mocks/logto.tsx
In E2E mode, Vite resolves @logto/react to a mock. The app renders the provider with fallback values when needed.
Browser smoke tests
LiveEditFronten/e2e/smoke.spec.ts, LiveEditFronten/components/LandingPage.tsx
Intercepts API and external requests, tests the landing-page sign-in flow and theme persistence, and places the theme toggle after the Sponsor and GitHub links.

Explanation

The title clearly describes the main change: adding Playwright end-to-end smoke tests for the landing-page call to action and theme persistence. It is longer than preferred but remains specific and relevant.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #63 coding requirements, from the supplied summary and diff metadata:

  1. Playwright suite against Vite with backend calls mocked, no API keys, database, or Logto account [#63]: e2e/smoke.spec.ts mocks /api/* responses. It aborts other external requests. e2e/mocks/logto.tsx replaces @logto/react in e2e mode through vite.config.ts. Compliant.
  2. Test 1, landing page main call to action [#63]: the smoke spec checks that the call to action opens sign-in. Compliant.
  3. Test 2, theme toggle changes data-theme on <html> and persists through reload in localStorage key app-theme [#63]: the spec switches from dark to light and checks persistence after reload. The summary does not name the data-theme or app-theme assertions explicitly. The reported run passed 2 tests. Compliant on the supplied evidence.
  4. e2e script and playwright.config.ts that starts the web server [#63]: package.json adds "e2e": "playwright test". playwright.config.ts starts the app in E2E mode on port 4173 with strictPort. The summary does not confirm whether the server command is vite dev or vite preview. The issue asks for npm run dev. The Vite dev server behavior is inferred from the PR description. Compliant on the supplied evidence.
  5. Separate CI job that installs browsers, runs the suite, and uploads the report on failure [#63]: .github/workflows/frontend-e2e.yml runs on pull requests and pushes. It installs Node.js 20 and Chromium, runs npm run e2e, and uploads the Playwright report and results on failure. A new workflow file is a separate job. Compliant.
  6. Stretch goal, authenticated chat flow with /api/chat mock [#63]: the issue labels this as a stretch goal. The PR does not implement it. The Logto mock is groundwork only. This is not a required objective for this PR.

No unmet coding requirement is found.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

LiveEditFronten/components/LandingPage.tsx changes the production landing page. Per the summary, the header now shows a GitHub Sponsor link and a repository star link with a live star count. The count comes from a GitHub repository API request on mount. The ThemeToggle is also moved to the end of the header controls. Issue #63 covers test infrastructure only. It excludes calls to any external API from the tests. Adding a runtime GitHub API fetch to the app does not support the smoke suite. The smoke spec mocks that request only because this change exists. The PR description states the PR changes no UI. This contradicts the LandingPage change. Other changes support the issue: index.tsx (E2E-mode LogtoProvider with fallback config), vite.config.ts (@logto/react alias in e2e mode), playwright.config.ts, e2e/mocks/logto.tsx, e2e/smoke.spec.ts, package.json, the CI workflow, and .gitignore.

Resolution

Remove the GitHub Sponsor link, the repository star link, the star-count fetch, and the header reorder from LiveEditFronten/components/LandingPage.tsx. Restore the header to its prior state. Remove the GitHub star-count mock from e2e/smoke.spec.ts. If the sponsor or star feature is wanted, move it to a separate PR with its own issue. Then update the PR description so it matches the diff.

Limit credentials available to the E2E job.

actions/checkout@v4 persists credentials for later steps by default. This job runs dependency installation and tests, but neither needs authenticated Git access. Set persist-credentials: false and grant only contents: read to the workflow. This also prevents repository settings from giving the job broader default token permissions. (github.com)

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Do not reuse an unverified server for E2E tests.

If Vite preview is running on port 4173, Playwright reuses it instead of starting the server with --mode e2e. The tests then run against an app without the Logto mock and can fail for the wrong reason. Set reuseExistingServer to false, or verify the existing server’s mode before reuse. (playwright.dev)
