feat(example): replace expo-example with a new example app - #354
Replaces apps/expo-example with a new iOS example app in apps/example. It is built as a product, not a playground: native tabs, onboarding, and a chat that follows the Vercel v0 and Margelo write-ups. The app also hosts the harness tests.
The app
Chat:
Runs on Apple Intelligence, or on Qwen3.5 2B or Gemma 4 E2B with llama.cpp.
Replies stream as Markdown (react-native-enriched-markdown), and reasoning shows in a row you can collapse.
You can attach photos for models that can see.
Each reply can be copied, shared or regenerated, and past chats are in a history screen.
The list is KeyboardAwareLegendList, and the reply that is streaming lives in memory, so it is saved once when it ends.
Voice: Apple speech recognition transcribes you live, the chat model answers, and Apple's speech model reads the answer out.
Search: notes are ranked by meaning with Apple's embeddings, and "Ask in Chat" answers from the closest ones.
Onboarding and settings:
Onboarding is a set of pages, then a feature picker, then a setup screen listing models by runtime with their sizes and download progress.
Settings is a SwiftUI form.
The brand icon and the Forest accent are applied.
In the iOS Simulator:
Voice hears a scripted question and Search matches shared words, because speech recognition and embeddings need a device. Both screens say so.
llama.cpp runs on the CPU there, because loading on the simulator's GPU crashes its Metal driver.
Repo changes
apps/expo-example is deleted. The new app keeps the com.callstack.ai.example bundle id, the harness configs and scripts, and the opt-in CORE_AI=1 and PCC=1 builds that the device tests use.
The Core AI download helper moves to harness/core-ai/storage.ts, the only place that uses it.
The harness now loads llama's image projector on the CPU in iOS simulators, which fixes the llama tests crashing the app there.
README, CONTRIBUTING, AGENTS.md, DESIGN.md and the website's Core AI models page point to apps/example.
The ADK, Core AI vision and generation, json-ui and dev-tools demos are removed with expo-example.
Testing
bun run test:harness:simulator on an iPhone 18 Pro simulator (iOS 27):
All 21 test files pass.
On the first run, the 6 llama files crashed the app; with the CPU fix, all 19 llama tests pass.
The one failure on the first run was a TLS error while downloading a model, which passed on the rerun.
Every screen was checked by hand in the simulator: onboarding, Chat with Apple Intelligence and with Qwen, Voice, Search, Settings, and dark mode.
Not tested:
Device harness tests.
The microphone and Apple embeddings on a device.
Attaching photos.
Gemma.
Known issues
A Release build for the simulator fails to compile in @react-native-ai/apple, which can't find SpotlightSearchTool (AppleLLMImpl.swift:1211). A device Release build is untested. This comes from the package, not this change.
Open branches that edit apps/expo-example will need rebasing onto apps/example.
New iOS-first app next to expo-example, built on expo-router native tabs.
Onboarding picks features and sets up models, settings is a SwiftUI form,
and chat uses LegendList with keyboard-controller, anchored scrolling,
a floating glass composer and streaming markdown. Replies are saved once
when they finish instead of on every chunk.

…beddings
The Simulator cannot run Apple's speech recognition or embeddings, so it
hears scripted questions and matches shared words instead, and says so
on screen. Real devices are unaffected.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Onboarding now walks through each feature and the privacy story before
setup. Models are grouped by runtime with download sizes, settings gain
data controls, chat gets starter suggestions, and search can answer a
query in chat from the closest notes.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ator
Reasoning models stream their thinking into a collapsible row, chat caps
it so small models still answer, and voice skips it. The Simulator's Metal
driver crashes when llama.cpp loads the vision projector, so llama runs on
CPU there. Replies keep single line breaks, and the search stand-in hashes
words with FNV-1a to avoid collisions.

…/example
The showcase app becomes the example app and hosts the harness tests.
It takes over the bundle id, the harness configs and scripts, and the
opt-in CORE_AI and PCC builds. The Core AI hub download helper moves
into harness/core-ai, its only user.

The pull request replaces the previous Expo example with a new app at apps/example. It adds onboarding, model setup, chat, voice, and semantic note search. Project documentation and harness references now point to the new app location.
Moves the example app to apps/example, updates project and harness references, adds app configuration and instructions, and removes the previous app files. The new entry point uses Expo Router, and Metro no longer applies Rozenite.
Adds persisted onboarding and enabled-feature state, feature selection and setup screens, tab navigation, settings, and shared UI and theme components.
Model adapters and readiness apps/example/src/adapters/*, apps/example/src/store/models.ts, apps/example/src/components/FeatureRequirements.tsx, apps/example/src/components/RequirementRow.tsx, apps/example/src/simulator.ts, harness/core-ai/*, harness/llama/helpers.ts, harness/apple/pcc.device.harness.ts
Adds Apple and llama.cpp language-model adapters, model availability and download state, and feature-readiness displays. Harness helpers use updated storage paths and device-dependent projector GPU settings.
Chat state and generation apps/example/app/(tabs)/chat/*, apps/example/src/chat/*, apps/example/src/store/chats.ts, apps/expo-example/src/screens/ChatScreen/*, apps/expo-example/src/store/chatStore.ts, apps/expo-example/src/tools.ts
Adds chat history, message composition and rendering, image attachments, streaming responses, regeneration, and persisted chat state. Removes the previous chat screen, store, tool integrations, and related components.
Voice transcription and playback apps/example/app/(tabs)/voice/*, apps/example/src/voice/*, apps/expo-example/src/components/RecordButton/*, apps/expo-example/src/components/adapters/llamaSpeechSetupAdapter.ts
Adds live transcription, model response streaming, and speech playback. Simulator transcription uses scripted questions.
Notes and semantic search apps/example/app/(tabs)/search/*, apps/example/src/search/*
Adds sample and user notes, embedding and cache handling, semantic ranking, and note-management UI. Simulator searches use keyword embeddings.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 202df
Model changes can interrupt replies, and microphone startup failures can appear successful. Resolve the model lifecycle risk before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 202df
The inspected flows require user interaction and have limited authority. No newly introduced remote disclosure or privilege escalation was established. Microphone behavior during navigation, concurrent startup, and native cleanup failures remains insufficiently verified, so the change is not assessed as minimal risk.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The inspected sources concern one app installation's notes, conversations, microphone input, and spoken output. They do not demonstrate cross-tenant or service-wide authority. Audio privacy remains dependent on recording lifecycle and native-provider behavior.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Microphone startup requires granted recording permission. Startup checks whether the hook unmounted while permission or recorder startup was pending and attempts cleanup rather than returning a successful listening state.
observed — Onboarding is enforced by a route guard, whereas feature selection hides tab triggers. Hidden-route deep-link behavior was not verified, and feature visibility should not be interpreted as an established authorization boundary.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Both the base recorder and replacement leave asynchronous startup without an in-flight guard while retaining recording resources in shared references. The head adds unmount cleanup. Concurrent native-start behavior and capture termination on tab focus loss remain unresolved, so an introduced or worsened privacy failure was not established.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Give each recording session explicit ownership across starting, listening, stopping, and cleanup. Serialize startup, define whether capture may continue after focus loss, and retain ownership until native termination is confirmed. This would strengthen lifecycle guarantees; it is not a verified new vulnerability.

- Composer keeps the draft when a message isn't sent
- The model menu is disabled while a reply generates, and model switches
run one at a time, unloading the previous model first
- Regenerating deletes the photos of the messages it drops
- Search results are tied to the notes they were ranked from
- Voice creates its abort controller before stopping, so a tap or leaving
cancels the answer, and stop releases everything when the recorder fails

VoiceScreen can start recording while its native permission request is pending. If Settings hides Voice before that request completes, the cleanup in useLiveTranscription runs before the recorder and audio context are stored. The continuation can then start resources after unmount.
This is a narrow lifecycle race. The source does not establish that the full tab-to-Settings workflow usually outlasts the permission callback.

… cleanup
- The composer keeps photos and explains when the model can't see them
- Voice closes its audio stream once, even when cleanup and stop overlap,

Add a shared Settings control to enabled feature screens.
Voice-only onboarding can start when Voice is ready. Search-only onboarding can also start when embeddings are ready, even when no chat model is selected. The hidden Chat tab removes the only current in-app Settings control in both flows. Users therefore cannot enable another feature or configure a model after onboarding.
Add one shared Settings control to the enabled feature screens. A single shared control resolves both paths; separate Voice and Search controls are not required.

Add one shared Settings control to the enabled feature screens in the NativeTabs
layout, keeping it available when the Chat tab is hidden so Voice-only and
Search-only users can open Settings. Avoid adding separate Settings controls for
Voice and Search.
Minor · Hide “Ask in Chat” when Chat is disabled. · index.tsx:65-86
When Chat is disabled, router.navigate('/chat') does not leave the user on Chat. Expo Router SDK 58 excludes the hidden route from visibleRoutes and replaces a focused hidden route with the initial or first visible tab. The action starts the new conversation before this redirect, so the user cannot see that conversation from the action.

Hide the “Ask in Chat” action when Chat is disabled so it cannot create a

feature-enabled state or hook to gate the action’s rendering on Chat being
enabled, while preserving the selected-model and results conditions.
Minor · Attach a rejection handler when the transcription starts. · useLiveTranscription.ts:92-114
Attach a rejection handler when the transcription starts.
transcribe(audio) runs during recording but has no rejection handler until stop() awaits it. A stream error therefore produces an unhandled promise rejection while the user is still recording. The error alert does not appear then. It appears only after the user taps stop.
Suggested fix
const transcription = transcribe(audio)
+ // Marks a stream error handled while recording. stop() still awaits it.+ transcription.catch(() => {})
transcriptionRef.current = transcription

- Voice and Search have a Settings button, so it stays reachable when the
Chat tab is turned off
- Ask in Chat is hidden when Chat is turned off
- Voice stops a recorder that finishes starting after the screen is gone,
resets its unmount flag for Fast Refresh, and handles transcription
errors while recording

The Settings route can delete the selected model while Chat is generating. Chat only disables model switching; its Settings action remains enabled. deleteModel then calls adapter.delete(), and the llama adapter executes await model.unload() while streamText is still using the same model. This can interrupt the active reply.
Make deletion wait for active Chat or Voice inference to finish, or cancel and await that inference before unloading the model.
