docs: re-run the fork-vs-upstream benchmark and add a results chart - #478
Merged

Conversation
Re-measured upstream 6560052 against fork ce6120b on Node 24.21.0 and Bun 1.4.3 on a quiet host. The fork is better in 68 of 76 comparisons, about the same in 5 and worse in 3 (Alamofire index on Node, warm explore on gin). README results tables, the cost list and the Node-or-Bun paragraph now quote that run, with a new chart. A dated benchmark doc holds the method, every table and a heatmap. render-charts.mjs builds the chart, heatmap and tables from the raw output.

- Line 258: Update the “Larger database” sentence to say “the other six corpora
above” for the 12–22% range, keeping the separate 38% figure for Supabase.
Review comments at @scripts/benchmarks/runtime/render-charts.mjs:
- Around line 30-31: Update the attempt sorting in the directory selection flow
before find() so accepted attempts are ordered by the numeric aN suffix rather
than lexicographically. Keep the existing accepted-status check and select the
first accepted attempt in numeric order.
- Line 97: Update ratio() to handle a zero baseline before division: treat two
zero measurements as equal, and give a positive fork measurement against a zero
baseline an explicit non-NaN display value. Ensure both cases remain visible in
the comparison counts and heatmap.

State that the host-quiet rule differs from the 2026-10-03 run, describe the two-line sync edit, say what --tables writes, sort attempts by number, handle a zero baseline, and fail on a missing watcher-sync value instead of dropping it. Reword the database-size bullet so supabase is not counted in both groups.

The fork is better than upstream in 68 of 76 benchmark comparisons, about the same in 5 and worse in 3, measured 2026-10-12 on a quiet host. This updates the README's results and adds a chart and a dated benchmark doc.
What changed
6560052aagainst forkce6120beon Node 24.21.0 and Bun 1.4.3, a results chart, and the "Node or Bun" paragraph and "What it costs" list re-derived from the new numbers. The stale "table predates three fixes" paragraph is gone, since the tables now include them.docs/benchmarks/fork-vs-upstream-node-bun-2026-10-12.md: method, all four arms, graph sizes, MCP and CLI tables, a heatmap of every result, a comparison with 2026-10-03, and how runs were accepted or rejected.scripts/benchmarks/runtime/render-charts.mjs: builds the chart, heatmap and every table from the raw run output, so no figure is typed by hand. A second run produces identical files. Results (Node, two runs per arm, medians)
The 3% reporting band is a convention, not a statistical margin. Results near it are labelled no clear change.
README rows checked
"About this fork" and "Measured results": the intro paragraph, the full index, one-file sync, MCP and CLI tables, the two prose paragraphs and the cost list were updated. The "Measured separately" table (worktree seeding, call-link precision) and the upstream-benchmark disclaimers were left, because they are not part of this run. The upstream merge point in "About this fork" is unchanged.

Summary by cubic
Re-runs the fork-vs-upstream benchmark on Node 24.21.0 and Bun 1.4.3 and refreshes the README's results, replacing the tables that predated three fixes and dropping the note that said so. The fork is better in 68 of 76 comparisons, about the same in 5 and worse in 3.
