Summary

Reading from a Context that isn't ready yet, or that has already been closed, now throws an error instead of silently returning 0, the default value or an empty result.

Before, calling getTreatment() too early quietly returned the control variant, which hides the mistake: the app behaves as if the user were in control and no one notices. Now the SDK tells you that it's being used in an unready state. This matches the JavaScript SDK, which throws in the same situations (src/context.ts:533-541).

getExperiments() is the one exception: it throws before the context is ready, but keeps working after close(), exactly as in the JavaScript SDK (src/context.ts:439).

Not affected: if the context fails to load its data (for example, the API is unreachable), it still counts as ready (isReady() == true, isFailed() == true) with empty data. Reads then return the control variant and default values, so the app keeps working without the API.

Version bumped to 2.0.0 because this is a breaking change.

Breaking changes (old → new)

Method Old (not ready / closing / closed) New
getTreatment, peekTreatment returned 0 throws IllegalStateException
getVariableValue, peekVariableValue returned the default throws
getVariableKeys empty map throws
getCustomFieldKeys empty array throws
getCustomFieldValue, getCustomFieldValueType null throws
getExperiments empty array throws before ready; still works after close (as in JS)

Error messages:

  • "ABsmartly Context is not yet ready."
  • "ABsmartly Context is finalizing." (was "ABSmartly Context is closing.")
  • "ABsmartly Context is finalized."

The casing changed from ABSmartly to ABsmartly, matching the other SDKs.

Migration

  • Wait for the context before reading: context.waitUntilReady() or waitUntilReadyAsync().
  • Use isFailed() if you want to know that the data didn't load (reads still work and return defaults).
  • Don't read from a context after close().

See "Migrating to 2.0.0" in the README and CHANGELOG.md.

Tests

  • ContextTest now checks that every read throws, with the exact message, before ready, while closing and after close.
  • New readsReturnDefaultsWhenLoadFailed checks that a context whose load failed is ready and returns defaults.
  • :core-api:test (JDK 11): 417 tests, all pass.
  • Putting back the old Context.java makes 3 tests fail, so the tests catch the old behavior.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Breaking Changes
    • Read methods now throw IllegalStateException when the context is not ready, finalising or finalised, rather than returning fallback values. getExperiments() remains available after finalisation but throws before readiness.
    • Unit identifiers now accept strings or immutable numbers. Blank strings and unsupported or mutable numeric values are rejected; numeric identifiers are converted for hashing. Existing unit values can only be reassigned to the same value.
    • Finalisation messages and ABsmartly error-message casing have changed. The project version is now 2.0.0.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Refreshing after a failed initial load is now a successful no-op. Lifecycle events are delivered before their associated futures complete.
  • Documentation
    • Added migration guidance on updated read behaviour and readiness checks.

Align Context read methods with the JavaScript SDK _checkReady
(javascript-sdk src/context.ts:533-541, experiments() at :439):

- getTreatment, peekTreatment, getVariableValue, peekVariableValue,
  getVariableKeys, getCustomFieldKeys/Value/ValueType now call
checkReady(true) and throw IllegalStateException before ready,
while finalizing, or after finalize (previously returned defaults).
- getExperiments uses checkReady(false): throws before ready but
still works after finalize, like JS experiments().
- Messages: "ABsmartly Context is not yet ready.",
"ABsmartly Context is finalizing.", "ABsmartly Context is finalized."
- A context whose load failed stays ready+failed with empty data, so
reads return defaults (new regression test).

BREAKING: version 2.0.0; see CHANGELOG.md and README migration notes.

Walkthrough

The project version changes from 1.6.3 to 2.0.0. Context read methods now throw IllegalStateException in specified not-ready, finalising, or finalised states instead of returning fallback values. getExperiments() throws before readiness but remains available during and after finalisation. Unit identifiers accept strings or numbers, with numeric values converted for hashing. Lifecycle events are logged before associated futures complete. A failed-context refresh completes without fetching data or logging an event. Tests and release documentation cover these changes.

✅ Approved

The read methods enforce the documented 2.0.0 lifecycle contract: they throw before readiness and during/after finalization, with the deliberate exception that getExperiments() remains available once ready. Failed initial loads still permit default-valued reads. No blocking issues found.

Next step: None — ready to merge.

What I checked

  • ✅ All 417 tests passed locally on JDK 11, including the changed lifecycle tests and failed-load regression.
  • ✅ Coverage verification, Java 6 API compatibility, SDK JAR creation, and example compilation passed.
  • ✅ Reverting the read guards while retaining the new messages makes all three lifecycle tests fail on missing exceptions.
  • ✅ Exact-head GitHub build and CodeRabbit status passed. The CI clean build covers the formatting gate that could not bootstrap locally.
Review details

Scope and intent

Head: bc04e421462d9e6b2c0cdc5e8fbe8d7549657a9a. Base and merge-base: 34716f86fe6a0a3de8ca5c6c53562fa9400d45f6. Initial review, full range, one commit and five changed files.

Declared intent is maintainer decision D1: a breaking public read contract and updated lifecycle messages, released as 2.0.0. No flag or phased rollout is declared. The author reports 417 passing tests and a three-test mutation check. Verified impact is nine public read entry points plus existing callers of the shared lifecycle guards receiving updated messages. Ready-context assignment, exposure, parsing and refresh behavior is unchanged. The version bump flows to Maven publication metadata and migration documentation describes the new contract. Existing APIs, tests and documentation establish an established SDK surface; specific customer adoption is not asserted or needed for this explicitly breaking major-version change. No material external-context unknown remains.

No AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md files were found. Read root README, module/build, formatter and compatibility configuration, and CI workflow.

Verification

  • Verified java and javac 11.0.32.1 before using the Gradle 8.5 wrapper.
  • Passed with JAVA_HOME set to the verified JDK 11: ./gradlew :core-api:test :core-api:jacocoTestCoverageVerification :core-api:jar :example:classes :core-api:animalsnifferMain. 417 tests, zero failures.
  • Local ./gradlew build spotlessCheck and separate Java-format task initialization failed because Eclipse formatter bootstrap could not resolve download.eclipse.org. This is an environmental bootstrap failure, not a source-format failure. Exact-head Actions run 39926015313, job build, completed successfully using JDK 11 and ./gradlew clean build; the Gradle build/check lifecycle includes Spotless. Raw CI logs could not be downloaded from the log host, but workflow, run, job and step results were readable.
  • Exact-head CodeRabbit commit status: success, review completed. Its optional docstring-coverage warning is not a failing source/build gate.
  • Mutation in a separate scratch tree: restored base Context.java, retaining the head's message changes to isolate read-guard behavior. Ran unmodified ContextTest.throwsWhenNotReady, throwsWhenClosing, throwsWhenClosed, and readsReturnDefaultsWhenLoadFailed with ./gradlew :core-api:test --tests selectors. First three failed because no exception was thrown; failed-load test passed as expected for unchanged behavior.
  • The removed returnsDefaultsWhenNotReady test covers the deliberately superseded contract; throwsWhenNotReady now pins all nine reads. Closing/closed tests cover guarded reads and the experiment-list exception. Existing ready-context tests exercise values and exposures.
  • git diff --check passed. Final PR fetch confirmed unchanged supplied head/base.

Passes

Passes (non-blocking): run: core runtime/API/error paths and performance, tests/CI/packaging, behaviour-bearing build configuration, cross-cutting simplicity, comment hygiene, diff composition | not run: deployment/operations/observability (no deployment, schema, capacity or telemetry changes), shared-component blast radius (no frontend source changed).

Performed locally without delegation: executable changes are nine guard replacements and three message updates in one class. No new loop, remote call, dependency or lifecycle state.

Comment hygiene

Comment hygiene (non-blocking): 2 comment / 91 code lines, ratio ~1:45.5, 0 blocks flagged

threshold T=5; restatements counted: no (10 × C < E)

None flagged: both added comments document the non-obvious JavaScript parity constraint for the experiment-list exception. Java production/test and executed Gradle files are source; Markdown prose is excluded.

Diff composition

Diff composition (non-blocking): every file is required for the change; none flagged

The pinned policy's introduced_blobs.py completed successfully: five content writes, all in commit bc04e421462d9e6b2c0cdc5e8fbe8d7549657a9a, one per changed path. No intermediate deleted/reverted writes in this single-commit PR. No scratch artifacts or added credential-bearing content found.

Simplifications

Simplifications (non-blocking): none

The implementation reuses the existing guards rather than adding machinery.

@joalves joalves changed the title feat!: reads throw before ready / after finalize (D1, JS parity) — 2.0.0 feat!: throw an error when the Context is used before it is ready or after it is closed — 2.0.0 Oct 27, 2026
…tures, no-op refresh on failed context

- Units accept numbers as well as strings and getUnit/getUnits return the
original type. Numeric UIDs hash as the value rounded to an integer, like
  the JavaScript SDK's toFixed(0).
- Ready, Refresh, Error and Close events are logged before the matching
future completes, so callers waiting on the future see the event.
- refresh() on a context whose initial load failed does nothing and
  succeeds, matching the JavaScript SDK.

Changes in 1e3b20e, found while making the cross-SDK test wrapper call only the SDK:

  • Numeric unit UIDs keep their type. setUnit/ContextConfig.setUnit accept a Number, and getUnit/getUnits return the value as it was set (the JavaScript SDK keeps string | number). A numeric UID hashes as its value rounded to an integer, like JavaScript's toFixed(0) (125.75 hashes as "126"). Before this, the wrapper had to remember what type each unit was sent as. This changes public signatures; it is covered by the 2.0.0 major bump already on this PR.
  • Lifecycle events are logged before their future completes. Ready, Error, Refresh and Close are now logged before waitUntilReadyAsync/refreshAsync/closeAsync complete, as JavaScript does. Before, a caller waiting on the future could miss the event, and the wrapper had to poll for it.
  • Refresh on a context whose initial load failed is a successful no-op. No fetch and no event, as in the JavaScript SDK (_refresh checks _failed).

Each change has regression tests in ContextTest that fail on the previous code.

❌ Changes requested

The new numeric UID support still permits identity changes that leave assignment and publication caches using the old identity. I verified one additional blocking case involving mutable numbers; the earlier review’s lifecycle-read changes remain accepted.

Next step: Make accepted numeric identities stable for the lifetime of a context, and address the already-reported numeric equality issue before merging.

Must fix

  1. Keep mutable numeric UIDs from changing an installed identity — callers can change an accepted AtomicInteger from 125 to 126 while publications continue to carry the hash of 125. Context.java:350 (inline below).
  2. The existing numeric-equality thread also remains applicable: my probe confirmed that replacing 9007199254740992L with 9007199254740993L succeeds and retains the first hash. No duplicate inline comment added.

Suggestions

  • One small test-stubbing simplification is recorded in the review details.

What I checked

  • ✅ All 426 tests passed locally on JDK 11, including numeric UIDs, lifecycle event ordering, failed-load refresh, and the previously reviewed lifecycle reads.
  • ✅ Coverage verification, Java 6 API compatibility, SDK JAR creation and example compilation passed.
  • ✅ Exact-head GitHub Actions build passed with ./gradlew clean build.
  • ❌ A focused public-API probe reproduced stale published identity hashes for both mutable numbers and the existing large-integer equality issue.
Review details

Scope and intent

Review round 2. Head: 1e3b20e91dbf4d2568f673666d546c904ae8132d. Base and merge-base: 34716f86fe6a0a3de8ca5c6c53562fa9400d45f6. Accepted baseline: bc04e421462d9e6b2c0cdc5e8fbe8d7549657a9a; responsibility and census cover only bc04e421..1e3b20e. The earlier approval is already dismissed.

Read PR description, both commits, top-level discussion including the author's explanation of the new changes, existing reviews and all four inline comments. The author deliberately adds Number-valued units and type-preserving getters, event-before-future ordering, and a failed-initial-load refresh no-op for JavaScript parity; the 2.0.0 release intentionally permits public-signature changes. No rollout flag or deployment ordering applies. The delta changes five files: runtime/API/data identity and concurrency/lifecycle in Context, API/configuration in ContextConfig, identity hashing in Hashing, unit tests in ContextTest, and release documentation in CHANGELOG. Full PR inventory additionally includes previously accepted README migration guidance and Gradle version metadata. No material mismatch with the author's updated scope.

Verified facts: public numeric setters retain any Number instance; getters expose it; hash and assigner caches key by unit type; README documents fixed context identity. Runtime probes establish the new mutable-number defect without assuming customer adoption. The SDK is an established public surface (existing APIs, tests, documentation); specific customer use is not asserted. No material external-context unknown determines this verdict.

Read CONTRIBUTING.md, relevant README sections, core/root build configuration, CI workflow and pinned policy context. No applicable AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md found.

Verification

  • Verified /usr/lib/jvm/by-version/11/bin/java -version and javac -version: 11.0.32.1.
  • Passed JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/by-version/11 ./gradlew :core-api:test :core-api:jacocoTestCoverageVerification :core-api:animalsnifferMain :core-api:jar :example:classes: 426 tests, zero failures.
  • Initial combined test/check invocation could not initialize the Eclipse formatter because download.eclipse.org DNS failed. This was environmental, not a formatting result. Exact-head Actions run 40509741426, job build, completed successfully on JDK 11 using ./gradlew clean build, covering the formatter/build gates. Commit status API returned zero statuses, not a failed check. CodeRabbit's published review was read; its documentation warning is not the repository build gate.
  • Compiled and ran an external UnitProbe with JDK 11 against the exact-head compiled production classes and their cached dependencies. ContextConfig.setUnit(AtomicInteger(125)) -> track/publish -> AtomicInteger.set(126) -> setUnit(126) -> track/publish produced getUnit=126 but both publications used Pe8YStj0dV_yaYYup3OT3Q; canonical 126 hashes to BpBZt--EDwx0qBTskje27A. The mutable reference alone changes getUnit even without calling setUnit again. The same probe reproduced the existing large-Long replacement report.
  • Reviewed the regression assertions for Ready/Refresh/Error/Close ordering and failed refresh, and traced numeric identity through assignments, holdouts and publish serialization. The deleted failed-refresh test covers deliberately superseded behavior; the new no-op test pins the intended replacement.
  • git diff --check bc04e421 HEAD passed. Final PR fetch confirmed the supplied head and base.

Passes

Passes (non-blocking): run: core runtime/API/security/data/error paths and performance (three executable classes change), tests/CI/packaging (ContextTest and public API change), deployment/operations/observability (lifecycle event emission order changes), cross-cutting simplicity, comment hygiene, diff composition | not run: shared-component blast radius (no frontend source changed), separate behaviour-bearing data/policy pass (no runtime data, schema or policy file changes).

Independent read-only agents reviewed runtime/identity/lifecycle and tests/build/simplicity respectively; primary review reproduced the retained identity finding and de-duplicated existing threads. No new remote call or input-scaled loop is added by this delta; numeric formatting adds local work proportional to the represented numeric value.

Simplifications

Simplifications (non-blocking): 1 candidate

  • ContextTest.java:3178 sets a default publish stub immediately before the capturing stub at 3184–3187 replaces it; smaller alternative: keep only the capturing stub, LOC delta: -1.

… hashing

- Compare numeric UIDs exactly, so distinct large longs are not treated
  as the same UID.
- Reject mutable Number types such as AtomicInteger: the context caches
the unit hash, so a UID changing after it was set would publish under
  its old identity.
- Format numeric UIDs exactly like JavaScript's toFixed(0): convert to
double first, keep "-0", and use exponent form from 1e21.
- Document that event loggers must not wait on the lifecycle future of
  the event they receive.

Minor · Use the pending readiness future before checking data_. · Context.java:113

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use the pending readiness future before checking data_.

setData(data) runs before the synchronous Ready logger. While that logger runs, waitUntilReadyAsync() returns an already-completed future because data_ is non-null, and waitUntilReady() skips the pending future for the same reason. This violates the documented Ready-event ordering.

Line 113 is not the cause. Its finally block runs after logEvent(Ready, data) returns.

❌ Changes requested

The mutable-number and large-integer equality fixes address the earlier identity findings. Two already-reported issues still prevent approval: large numeric IDs can hash differently across SDKs, and late readiness callers can return before the Ready event finishes. I reproduced both on this head; no duplicate inline comments added.

Next step: Address the existing numeric-formatting and readiness-ordering reports, with regressions for the cases below.

Must fix

  1. Match JavaScript's numeric UID representation on supported JDKs — on JDK 11, numeric 1e23 hashes differently from JavaScript. Existing inline report.
  2. Make late readiness callers respect event completion — waitUntilReadyAsync() and waitUntilReady() bypass the pending readiness future while the Ready logger is still executing. Existing review report.

What I checked

  • ✅ All 428 tests passed locally on JDK 11, including mutable-number rejection, exact large-integer equality, lifecycle reads, event ordering and failed-load refresh.
  • ✅ Coverage verification, Java 6 API compatibility, SDK JAR creation and example compilation passed.
  • ✅ Exact-head GitHub Actions build passed, including the clean-build formatting gates.
  • ❌ Focused probes reproduced both remaining issues despite the green suite.

Evidence for the existing reports

[P2] Numeric formatting: The public numeric-unit setters feed Hashing.unitToString and the cached assignment/publication hash. On JDK 11.0.32.1, the exact-head implementation returns 9.999999999999999e+22 for 1e23; Node's (1e23).toFixed(0) returns 1e+23. Their hashes are respectively XMeGXW1Am675w8XMfPFU1w and C2kIOZMVyzHIQ9hfVjhzvw. This silently breaks the stated cross-SDK identity contract. Acceptance criterion: accepted numeric UIDs, including 1e23, produce the JavaScript canonical string and hash on supported JDKs, with a regression that fails for this implementation. The narrow conversion correction is justified by silent assignment/attribution divergence.

[P2] Readiness ordering: Completing a pending data future calls setData before the Ready logger. A direct callback probe then observes a newly requested waitUntilReadyAsync().isDone() == true, and synchronous waitUntilReady() returns inside that callback. The same early return is reachable from another thread while the callback runs. The changed ordering therefore does not ensure that a caller waiting on readiness sees the completed event, as the changelog promises. Acceptance criterion: readiness waits requested while the Ready callback is outstanding do not settle/return until that callback finishes; add a regression covering late callers, not only the future captured before load completion. Respect the documented prohibition on waiting for the triggering future from the logger itself. Fixing the readiness gate is proportionate to avoiding timing-dependent missing events.

Scope and intent

Round 3. Reviewed head f0505e2ea3ffe25691345152de74f40f633bf48b; supplied base and verified merge-base 34716f86fe6a0a3de8ca5c6c53562fa9400d45f6. Full cumulative range reviewed: three commits, eight changed files. This is a follow-up to changes requested; the responsibility baseline is the merge-base.

Read the description, all commits and changed files, paginated top-level discussion, reviews and inline comments/replies, and exact-head Actions run/jobs and commit statuses. Read CONTRIBUTING, README migration/unit/event guidance, changelog, root/module build files, compatibility and CI configuration. No applicable AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md found. The author intends a breaking 2.0.0 read-state contract, type-preserving numeric IDs with JavaScript hashing parity, event-before-future ordering, and no-op refresh after failed initial load. The author reports JDK 11 tests and regression checks. Actual affected consumers are public Context/ContextConfig callers, assignment/holdout hashing, publication, event loggers and lifecycle waiters; release metadata carries the major bump. No rollout flag or deployment-order assumption applies. No material mismatch with the scope expanded in the author's top-level comment.

Verified facts underpin the findings: executable public entry points, their cached hashes, JDK 11 conversion output, JavaScript output and callback/wait behavior. This is an established SDK surface, inferred with high confidence from existing public APIs, documentation and baseline tests; no specific customer adoption is asserted or necessary. No external-context unknown determines this verdict.

Round-3 acceptance tracking

  • Earlier mutable-Number and large-integer equality blockers: satisfied for the reported AtomicInteger/AtomicLong and adjacent Long cases; new regressions pass.
  • Numeric formatting: remediation regression in the new exponent-formatting branch, linked to the earlier large-numeric parity report and the current 1e23 thread. Stable criterion is cross-SDK canonical identity on supported JDKs.
  • Late readiness waits: independent PR change in 1e3b20e, already identified in the latest CodeRabbit review. The prior ordering tests captured the readiness future before data completion and did not examine the late-call path; the new direct probe establishes that missing case. Stable criterion is callback completion before readiness waits settle.
  • No new inline findings; both surviving defects are de-duplicated against the linked reports.

Verification

Verified /usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-arm64/bin/java -version and javac -version: 11.0.32.1. With that verified JDK selected, passed ./gradlew :core-api:test :core-api:jacocoTestCoverageVerification :core-api:animalsnifferMain :core-api:jar :example:classes: 428 tests, zero failures. git diff --check passed.

The initial combined invocation adding spotlessCheck failed at formatter bootstrap because download.eclipse.org could not resolve; it did not produce a source-format failure. Exact-head Actions run 40514526464, job build (122224864797), completed successfully, including its JDK 11 ./gradlew clean build step. Commit statuses contain no entries; their aggregate pending with an empty list is not evidence of an outstanding job. Read the current CodeRabbit review, including its two applicable reports; the optional docstring warning is not a failed repository build gate.

Compiled and executed external ReviewProbe.java against exact-head production classes and the resolved streamsupport dependencies using JDK 11. It prints the divergent numeric strings/hashes and observes late asynchronous and synchronous readiness calls returning inside Ready. Compared conversion with node -p '(1e23).toFixed(0)'. Regressions for mutable-number rejection and exact large-Long comparison pass in the unmodified suite. The removed defaults-before-readiness and failed-refresh tests intentionally exercise superseded contracts; their replacement assertions cover the intended changes.

Passes

Passes (non-blocking): run: core runtime/API/security/data/error paths and performance (Context, config and hashing executable changes), tests/CI/packaging (ContextTest and public API/version changes), deployment/operations/observability (lifecycle event emission order), behaviour-bearing build configuration (executed Gradle version metadata), cross-cutting simplicity, comment hygiene, diff composition | not run: shared-component blast radius (no frontend source changed).

Independent read-only passes covered runtime/identity/lifecycle and tests/CI/packaging; primary verified the retained issues and owned de-duplication and verdict. No additional remote call or input-scaled loop is introduced. Numeric conversion is local work and hashes remain cached by unit type.

Readiness ordering (review 5668110124): waitUntilReady/waitUntilReadyAsync now always wait on the ready future instead of short-cutting on loaded data, so a caller that arrives while the Ready event is being logged waits until it is done. Test: lateReadinessWaitersDoNotSettleBeforeReadyEventIsLogged. Large-number formatting also fixed (see thread).

❌ Changes requested

The late-readiness fix and the 1e23 regression now pass. One earlier requirement remains unmet: accepted numeric IDs must hash identically to JavaScript. I reproduced the newly reported 2^89 case, which still produces different identities across SDKs despite passing tests and CI.

Next step: Correct the remaining numeric conversion case and add a regression for it.

Must fix

  1. Match JavaScript's canonical numeric UID for 2^89 — Java and JavaScript hash different strings for the same accepted numeric identity. Existing inline report; no duplicate inline comment added.

Suggestions

  • One small, non-blocking numeric-formatting simplification is recorded in the details.

What I checked

  • ✅ All 429 tests passed on JDK 11, including the new late-readiness regression, mutable-number rejection and exact large-integer equality.
  • ✅ Coverage verification, Java 6 API compatibility, SDK JAR creation and example compilation passed.
  • ✅ Exact-head GitHub Actions build passed, including the clean-build formatting gate.
  • ❌ A focused JDK 11 probe and Node comparison confirm different canonical strings and hashes for 2^89.

Evidence for the existing report

[P2] Numeric identity conversion: ContextConfig.setUnit/Context.setUnit accept Math.scalb(1.0, 89), which reaches Hashing.unitToString through assignment/publication hashing. Java returns 6.1897001964269014e+26 and hashes it as GXuDdlPCz26CTte67h8FNA; Node's (2 ** 89).toFixed(0) returns 6.189700196426902e+26, hashing as jIW0OrUF9NsZmugX9sktOQ. The latter decimal also round-trips to exactly the same Java double. The new shortestRoundTrip tests only the nearest decimal at each precision; at this asymmetric rounding boundary, an adjacent 16-digit candidate succeeds when the nearest one fails. It therefore incorrectly advances to 17 digits.

Acceptance criterion, unchanged from the earlier review: accepted numeric UIDs produce the JavaScript canonical string and hash on supported JDKs, with a regression that fails for the incorrect implementation. The 1e23 example is fixed, but this counterexample shows that the general identity criterion is not yet satisfied. Silent assignment/attribution divergence justifies a focused conversion correction.

Scope and intent

Round 4. Head: 80a3c027ff066f41ed464a4f69f474d56888fe68. Supplied base and verified merge-base: 34716f86fe6a0a3de8ca5c6c53562fa9400d45f6. Reviewed the complete four-commit, eight-file cumulative change, with the merge-base as responsibility baseline for this follow-up to changes requested. Read description, commits, paginated discussion, previous reviews, inline comments/replies and exact-head Actions run/jobs/statuses. Final fetch confirmed unchanged head/base.

Intent: breaking 2.0.0 read-state guards, type-preserving numeric identities with JavaScript hashing parity, event-before-future completion and no-op refresh after failed initial load. Actual consumers include public Context/ContextConfig callers, assignment/holdout and publication hashing, event loggers and readiness waiters. Version metadata and release/migration documentation match that expanded intent. No rollout flag or deployment-order assumption applies. Existing public APIs, documentation and baseline tests support a high-confidence inference that this is an established SDK surface; no specific customer adoption is asserted. Runtime conversion results and public call paths are verified facts. No material external-context unknown determines the verdict.

Read CONTRIBUTING, relevant README sections, changelog, root/module Gradle and compatibility/formatting configuration, CI and pinned repository review context. No applicable AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md found.

Acceptance tracking

  • Mutable-number identity and exact large-integer equality: reported cases remain fixed, with passing regressions.
  • Late readiness callers: fixed; both wait APIs now consult the readiness future rather than shortcutting on loaded data, and the late-caller regression passes.
  • Numeric canonical identity: unresolved original blocker, with a counterexample in the 80a3c027 remediation of the earlier numeric-formatting report. The newly introduced nearest-only search is the cause. This is the same cross-SDK identity acceptance criterion, not a new compatibility requirement. The new boundary probe establishes the remaining gap.
  • One blocking issue, already reported inline by CodeRabbit; no duplicate thread. No human adjudication is requested: there have not been two consecutive unsuccessful attempts at this same conversion criterion since the round-3 request.

Verification

Verified /usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-arm64/bin/java -version and javac -version: 11.0.32.1. Independent tests/build pass executed the native suite and build; primary repeated the focused task invocation and inspected XML results: 429 tests, zero failures/errors/skips. Command with that JDK selected: ./gradlew :core-api:test :core-api:jacocoTestCoverageVerification :core-api:animalsnifferMain :core-api:jar :example:classes. Primary repeat was up-to-date after the independent pass. The independent pass also passed build -x spotlessCheck.

Local clean build formatter bootstrap was blocked by DNS for download.eclipse.org, not a formatting verdict. Exact-head Actions run 40520556450, job build, and its JDK 11 ./gradlew clean build step completed successfully, covering formatting and build checks. Commit statuses contain zero entries; an empty aggregate pending is not an outstanding check. Current CodeRabbit review and new numeric report were read.

Compiled an external ReviewProbe.java using JDK 11 against exact-head compiled production classes; ran it to compare Hashing.unitToString, round-trip equality and both hashes. Compared with node -p '(2 ** 89).toFixed(0)'. Also confirmed 1e23 now returns 1e+23. Inspected changed lifecycle tests and removed identifiers: defaults-before-readiness coverage was replaced by the deliberate throwing contract; failed-refresh coverage was replaced by explicit no-fetch/no-event assertions. Existing unit/API tests are the repository's practice level. git diff --check passed.

Passes

Passes (non-blocking): run: core runtime/API/security/data/error paths and performance (Context, config and hashing change), tests/CI/packaging (public signatures, ContextTest and version metadata), deployment/operations/observability (lifecycle event emission ordering), behaviour-bearing build configuration (executed Gradle version metadata), cross-cutting simplicity, comment hygiene, diff composition | not run: shared-component blast radius (no frontend source changed).

Independent read-only passes covered runtime/identity/lifecycle, tests/build and cross-cutting simplicity; primary verified the retained blocker and owned de-duplication and verdict. The new decimal search is bounded to 17 precision attempts and hashes remain cached per unit type; no new remote call or unbounded customer-input loop.

Simplifications

Simplifications (non-blocking): 1 candidate

  • Hashing.java:41–45 manually extracts scientific-notation digits, exponent and mantissa. Smaller alternative: use the stripped BigDecimal's toString().replace('E', 'e') with the existing sign. In this branch magnitude is at least 1e21 with at most 17 significant digits, so BigDecimal already uses scientific notation with a positive exponent. LOC delta: -4 using a one-line return. This does not correct or replace the shortest-round-trip search and is not a merge requirement.

Run a simplification pass locally before pushing: these candidates cost less to address now than as a further review round.

…like JavaScript

Try both neighbouring decimals at each precision and keep the closest one
that reads back as the same double (ECMA-262 Number::toString). The nearest
decimal alone misses cases such as 2^89.

Changes requested: backward compatibility with 1.6.3

This SDK ships inside customers' apps, so I reviewed it against the compatibility bar: the released 1.6.3 (the latest on Maven Central). Unreleased main is not the baseline. jerv's open items (numeric formatting, readiness ordering) are separate; this review only covers what changes for an app upgrading from 1.6.3.

Everything below was measured at 80a3c027, not read off the diff (af3501f9, pushed since, only changes numeric formatting in Hashing, so none of the items below is affected):

  • the same probe test (every read and write, before ready / after a failed load / while closing / after close) run against 1.6.3, main and this branch;
  • a javap -public diff of the 1.6.3 jar against this branch's jar;
  • a "customer app" compiled against the 1.6.3 jar, then run with this branch's jar swapped in;
  • the full cross-sdk-tests suite (227 scenarios) with the java wrapper linked to main, then to this branch.

Must fix

1. The unit API change breaks existing callers, at compile time and at run time.
Context.getUnit/ContextConfig.getUnit change their return type from String to Object, and getUnits() from Map<String, String> to Map<String, Object>:

// compiled against core-api 1.6.3, run against this branch's jar without recompiling:
String sid = ContextConfig.create().setUnit("session_id", "s-123").getUnit("session_id");
// java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: 'java.lang.String com.absmartly.sdk.ContextConfig.getUnit(java.lang.String)'

// recompiled against this branch:
// error: incompatible types: Object cannot be converted to String
// error: incompatible types: Map<String,Object> cannot be converted to Map<String,String>

The NoSuchMethodError case is the dangerous one. It hits any library compiled against 1.6.3 (an internal wrapper module, a framework integration) as soon as an app pulls in the new SDK, and it only fails when that code path runs. Adding the Number overloads is fine; changing the existing getters is not. Suggestion: keep String getUnit(String) and Map<String, String> getUnits() exactly as they are (return the string form, Hashing.unitToString for numeric UIDs), and add typed accessors next to them if the original type is needed (e.g. Object getUnitValue(String) / Map<String, Object> getUnitValues()). setUnits(Map<String, ?>) is fine as is: it stays source- and binary-compatible with Map<String, String> callers.

2. An event logger that waits for readiness now deadlocks.
1.6.3 completed the ready future and then logged Ready, and ContextEventLogger had no restriction on what handleEvent may call. This branch logs Ready first, and its new Javadoc forbids waiting on the future. An existing logger like this:

public void handleEvent(Context context, EventType event, Object data) {
    if (event == EventType.Ready) {
        context.waitUntilReady();   // or waitUntilReadyAsync().get()
        ...
    }
}
  • on 1.6.3: completes; the logger sees isReady() == true;
  • on this branch: the logger never finishes and the thread that completes the data future blocks forever (still blocked after 5 s in the probe).

A Javadoc sentence can't fix a contract that existing implementations already rely on. If "the event is logged before the future completes" is needed for the cross-SDK wrapper, please get it another way, e.g. have the wrapper capture events in its own logger and read them after the future settles, rather than reordering the public lifecycle. The same reordering applies to Refresh, Error and Close; it needs the same check.

3. Custom-field reads stop working while closing and after close.
In 1.6.3, getCustomFieldKeys, getCustomFieldValue and getCustomFieldValueType had no lifecycle guard and kept returning real values during and after close() (probe: [country, languages, overrides], US,PT,ES,DE,FR, string). This branch makes them throw IllegalStateException. Suggestion: use checkReady(false), as getExperiments does. That still throws before ready (where 1.6.3 threw a NullPointerException, so no working code depends on it) and keeps the 1.6.3 behaviour after close.

4. CHANGELOG, README "Migrating to 2.0.0" and the PR body describe the wrong "before".
They say the reads "returned 0 / the default / empty" before ready and after close. No released version did that. In 1.6.3 they already threw IllegalStateException (default-returning only exists on main since #11, which was never released). A customer upgrading from 1.6.3 would be told about a break they never had, and not about the ones above. Please rewrite the notes against 1.6.3. Also drop internal references ("maintainer decision D1", the JS SDK's private _checkReady) from public docs.

Should fix

5. Exception messages change. 1.6.3: ABSmartly Context is not yet ready / … is closing / … is closed. This branch: ABsmartly …, a trailing ., and finalizing / finalized. The exception type is unchanged, so this only affects callers that match on the message, but with a no-break bar the safest option is to keep the 1.6.3 strings, or else list this explicitly as a change in the notes.

6. Companion change in cross-sdk-tests. Scenario 201 ("Not Ready - Read Methods Return Defaults") asserts the unreleased main behaviour. With the java wrapper linked to main all 227 scenarios pass; linked to this branch, 226/227 pass and 201 is the only one that fails. The JS and Go wrappers also mask their SDKs' "not yet ready" throw (if (!isReady()) return {result: 0} / mapping the error to 0). JS, Python, Swift, PHP, Ruby and Kotlin all throw from getTreatment before ready, so the scenario and those wrappers should change, not the SDKs.

Fine, no action

  • Treatments, variables, variable keys and experiments before ready / while closing / after close: same as 1.6.3 apart from the message text. This branch is effectively reverting main's unreleased break, which is correct.
  • getExperiments() after close now returns the names (1.6.3 threw). That's a relaxation, so it's safe.
  • A context whose load failed behaves identically to 1.6.3 for every read and write.
  • Public API: apart from item 1, nothing from 1.6.3 is removed or changed; everything else is additive.
  • All PR tests pass on JDK 11 at 80a3c027.

Versioning

Once 1–3 are fixed, this PR has no breaking change against 1.6.3 that justifies 2.0.0 on its own. Whether the next release is a major one depends on everything else on main since 1.6.3 (#11, #12, about 6.5k lines). That needs the same released-jar check before the version is chosen.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Initialise the readiness future for completed data.

ABSmartly.createContextWith supplies an already completed future. The dataFuture.isDone() branch logs Ready without initialising readyFuture_. A Ready logger that calls waitUntilReadyAsync() can therefore receive an already completed future before the Ready callback returns. This violates the documented event-order contract.

The existing ordering tests use an incomplete dataFuture, so they do not cover this supported construction path.

❌ Changes requested

The numeric-formatting correction now handles the reported 2^89 case, and tests and CI pass. One additional ordering defect remains: a second caller can finish closing the context while its Close event callback is still running.

Next step: Make late close callers wait for the outstanding Close callback, with a regression covering that timing.

Must fix

  1. Preserve Close-event ordering for every close caller — a late closeAsync() returns a completed future before the Close callback finishes. Context.java:797–799 (inline below).

Suggestions

  • One small, non-blocking formatting simplification is recorded in the details.

What I checked

  • ✅ All 429 tests pass on JDK 11, including numeric identities, lifecycle reads, late readiness waits and failed-load refresh.
  • ✅ Coverage verification, Java 6 API compatibility, SDK packaging and example build pass.
  • ✅ Exact-head GitHub Actions clean build passes, including formatting.
  • ✅ The 2^89, 1e23 and maximum-double conversion regressions pass; an independent deterministic comparison of 29,991 finite random doubles against Node found no mismatches.
  • ❌ A two-thread public-API probe reproduces a completed late close future while the original close future and Close callback remain pending.

Scope, intent and discussion

Review round 5. Head: af3501f9dbb829b4f276d55447a59e0526ae26a2. Base and verified merge-base: 34716f86fe6a0a3de8ca5c6c53562fa9400d45f6. Full five-commit/eight-file cumulative range reviewed as a follow-up to changes requested. Read description, commits, changed files, paginated discussion and inline replies, previous reviews and exact-head CI. Read CONTRIBUTING, relevant README migration/unit/logger sections, CHANGELOG, root/module Gradle, formatter/compatibility configuration and workflows. No applicable AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md found.

Declared scope is the breaking 2.0.0 read-state contract, type-preserving numeric UIDs with JavaScript canonical hashing, lifecycle events before future completion, and no-op refresh after failed load. Actual affected consumers are Context/ContextConfig callers, assignment/holdout and publication hashing, loggers and lifecycle waiters; version metadata flows to Maven publication. No feature flag or deployment sequencing is declared. Existing APIs, tests and documentation support a high-confidence inference that this is an established public SDK; no specific customer adoption is asserted. The retained defect is verified directly and does not depend on adoption assumptions.

Read the newly submitted maintainer compatibility review 5669083624, including its released-1.6.3 baseline and compatibility requests. Those requests require author/maintainer reconciliation with the explicitly breaking contract; this review does not override or duplicate that review. Also read CodeRabbit's current completed-data readiness report and test suggestion 5669105753. No duplicate inline report added. The close finding below is independently reproducible under the current stated event-ordering contract.

Convergence summary — review round 5

  • Unresolved original blockers: 0 for the concrete cases retained by this session's previous reviews
  • Remediation regressions: 0
  • Independent PR-change findings: 1
  • Acceptance criteria still open: every close future requested while the Close callback is outstanding must remain pending until that callback finishes
  • Human adjudication requested: no — this is a newly verified independent gap, not two failed remediation attempts; the separate maintainer compatibility review remains for its participants to reconcile

The reported mutable AtomicInteger/AtomicLong, exact adjacent-Long, asynchronous late-readiness and numeric-formatting cases are fixed and their regressions pass. The close gap was present in the 1e3b20e lifecycle-ordering change and missed earlier because tests retained the first close future before publisher completion. Extending the late-readiness analysis to late close callers and executing a two-thread probe supplies the new evidence.

Verification

Verified java and javac 11.0.32.1 at /usr/lib/jvm/by-version/11. Ran JAVA_HOME="${JAVA_HOME_11:?}" ./gradlew clean build: formatter initialization failed because download.eclipse.org could not resolve, not because of source formatting. Ran JAVA_HOME="${JAVA_HOME_11:?}" ./gradlew build -x spotlessCheck: passed, 429 tests, coverage verification, Animal Sniffer, JAR and example distributions. Exact-head Actions run 40523341972, build job 122256086247, completed successfully including JDK 11 ./gradlew clean build; this covers the formatter unavailable locally. Commit statuses have zero entries, not an outstanding check.

Compiled external CloseProbe.java with verified JDK 11 against exact-head production classes and resolved dependencies. It tracks a goal, starts close with a pending publisher, completes publishing on a worker, holds the Close callback on a bounded latch, and invokes close again from the main thread. Output: closed=true originalDone=false lateDone=true; after releasing the callback: originalDoneAfterCallback=true. No callback waits on its own lifecycle future. The runtime independent pass also compared 29,991 finite deterministic random doubles with Node toFixed(0), with no mismatches. Numeric conversion is bounded to 17 precision iterations and cached per unit type. git diff --check passes.

Changed lifecycle tests use behavioral assertions. Removed defaults-before-ready and failed-refresh tests are replaced by the intentional throwing and no-fetch/no-event contracts. Existing Java API unit tests establish the relevant practice level; no vacuous-test or uncovered-observable-change finding was demonstrated.

Passes

Passes (non-blocking): run: core runtime/API/security/data/error paths and performance (Context, config and hashing changes), tests/CI/packaging (ContextTest, public signatures and version metadata), deployment/operations/observability (lifecycle event ordering), behaviour-bearing build configuration (executed Gradle version metadata), cross-cutting simplicity, comment hygiene, diff composition | not run: shared-component blast radius (no frontend source changed).

Independent read-only agents covered runtime/identity/lifecycle and tests/CI/packaging/simplicity; primary reproduced the retained close finding and owns the verdict.

Simplifications

Simplifications (non-blocking): 1 candidate

  • Hashing.java:41–45 manually extracts scientific digits/exponent/mantissa; smaller alternative: return the existing sign plus the stripped BigDecimal's toString().replace('E', 'e'). At magnitude ≥1e21 and at most 17 significant digits it already uses positive-exponent scientific notation. LOC delta: -4. This earlier non-blocking suggestion remains optional and does not replace the shortest-round-trip search.

❌ Changes requested

The usual late-close case is fixed, but the earlier close-ordering requirement still has one concurrent-entry gap. I reproduced a late close future completing while the first Close callback was outstanding, despite passing tests and CI.

Next step: Preserve the outstanding Close completion gate when another caller has already passed the initial closed-state check, and cover that interleaving.

Must fix

  1. Keep every close caller behind the outstanding Close callback — overlapping callers can replace the gate, emit a second Close event, and let subsequent callers finish early. This continues the existing close-ordering finding; no duplicate inline thread added.

Suggestions

  • One small, optional numeric-formatting simplification remains in the details.

What I checked

  • ✅ All 431 tests pass on JDK 11, including both new late-close regressions and earlier numeric/readiness regressions.
  • ✅ Coverage verification, Java 6 API compatibility, SDK packaging and example build pass.
  • ✅ Exact-head GitHub Actions clean build passes, including formatting.
  • ❌ A debugger-controlled, three-caller probe against unmodified production classes reports events=2 firstCallbackOutstanding=true lateDone=true.

Evidence for the existing finding

[P2] Outstanding close gate can be replaced. Caller A passes !closed_.get() at Context.java:783 and pauses before the CAS. Caller B closes with nothing pending, installs its gate, sets closed_, clears closing_, and enters a blocked Close callback. A resumes: its CAS now succeeds, and the nothing-pending path at lines 822–825 replaces B's gate and emits another Close event. When A's callback returns, the replacement gate completes. Caller C, arriving while B's callback remains outstanding, receives that completed replacement at lines 847–849.

The probe uses ordinary public Context.create/closeAsync calls. JDK 11 JDI breakpoints only schedule A after the initial check and release it when B enters its callback; no production code, state fields or returned values are modified. B's logger waits on a bounded latch, not on a lifecycle future. The exact-head output above proves both duplicate Close delivery and premature completion. The new tests cover callers entering after closed_ is set, not an earlier caller resuming before the CAS.

Acceptance criterion, unchanged: every close future requested during an outstanding Close callback waits for that callback to finish. This is an unresolved original blocker, not a new compatibility requirement. The new gate fixes the previously reported schedule but is replaceable in this remaining schedule. A local correction is proportionate to the promised event-before-completion contract.

Scope, intent and discussion

Review round 6. Head: b50c6fcba386d13a6dd56b60b5b24f975c8ea4c3. Supplied base and verified merge-base: 34716f86fe6a0a3de8ca5c6c53562fa9400d45f6. Reviewed the full six-commit/eight-file range as a follow-up to changes requested. Read current description, commits, diff, paginated top-level conversation, reviews and inline replies, and exact-head CI. Final fetch confirmed unchanged head/base.

Intent is breaking 2.0.0 read-state guards, numeric type-preserving unit APIs with JavaScript canonical hashing, lifecycle events before future completion, and no-op refresh after failed initial load. Actual consumers are public Context/ContextConfig callers, assignment/holdout and publication hashes, event loggers and lifecycle waiters. Gradle metadata carries the major version. No rollout flag or deployment ordering is declared. Existing APIs, baseline tests and documentation support a high-confidence inference of an established public SDK; no specific customer adoption is asserted. The retained ordering defect is directly verified and needs no adoption assumption.

Read CONTRIBUTING, relevant README migration/unit/logger guidance, CHANGELOG, root/module Gradle, compatibility/formatting configuration and CI workflow. No applicable AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md found. The independent runtime and tests/build/simplicity passes were followed by primary verification and de-duplication.

The separate maintainer released-1.6.3 compatibility review remains for its participants to reconcile with the explicitly breaking scope; this review does not override or duplicate it. Also read the existing completed-data readiness and error-test suggestions. The verdict here independently follows the reproduced close-ordering defect.

Convergence summary — review round 6

  • Unresolved original blockers: 1
  • Remediation regressions: 0
  • Independent PR-change findings: 0
  • Acceptance criteria still open: every close future requested during an outstanding Close callback waits for that callback to finish
  • Human adjudication requested: no — this is the first remediation round for the close criterion, not two consecutive unsuccessful attempts

Earlier reported mutable AtomicInteger/AtomicLong, exact adjacent-Long comparison, asynchronous late readiness, and numeric formatting cases remain covered by passing regressions. The new close gate satisfies the old simple late-caller probe but not the concurrent-entry schedule described above. No active change request is being treated as cleared by round count.

Verification

Verified /usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-arm64/bin/java -version and javac -version: 11.0.32.1. With that JDK selected, ./gradlew test --no-daemon and ./gradlew build -x spotlessCheck --no-daemon pass. The independent validation executed 431 cases; primary repeats were up-to-date. Coverage verification, Animal Sniffer, JAR and example distributions pass. Independent sources/Javadoc and release metadata generation also pass; signing/publication were not invoked.

Local full build cannot bootstrap Eclipse formatting because download.eclipse.org DNS resolution fails; that is not a source-format result. Exact-head Actions run 40525881085, job build (122265197593), completed successfully with JDK 11 ./gradlew clean build, covering that gate. Commit statuses contain zero entries: the aggregate pending state is not an outstanding job. CodeRabbit's paused automated review is not a failed repository build gate.

Compiled external CloseRaceProbe.java and RaceDebugger.java with JDK 11 against exact-head production classes and cached runtime dependencies. Ran the JDI scheduling probe successfully with the output quoted above. All waits were bounded. No source mutation was needed. git diff --check passes.

Changed test assertions exercise actual future state, canonical numeric strings and published hashes. The two removed identifiers intentionally cover superseded defaults-before-readiness and failed-refresh contracts; replacement tests pin throws and no-fetch/no-event behavior. Existing Java API unit tests establish the practice level. No vacuous-test or uncovered-observable-change finding was demonstrated. Numeric conversion is bounded to 17 precision attempts and cached by unit type; no new remote call or unbounded customer-input loop.

…s after the Close event

Starting a close and publishing its future now happen under one lock.
Every other caller, whether it arrives while the close is running or after
the context is closed, receives that attempt's future, which completes
only after the Close event is logged. The Close event is logged once.

❌ Changes requested

The overlapping-close race is fixed, but one close-ordering blocker remains: cancelling the first close future lets a later caller finish successfully while the Close callback is still running. Tests and CI pass. Human adjudication is requested because the same close-ordering requirement remains unmet after two remediation attempts.

Next step: The SDK owner should choose whether to fix this cancellation case, explicitly accept its risk, or change the promised completion contract.

Must fix

  1. Keep later close callers behind an outstanding Close callback after cancellation — a successful closeAsync().join() can return before the event is delivered. This continues the existing close-ordering finding, at current Context.java:787–792; no duplicate inline thread added.

Human review required

Question: Should the stated close-ordering guarantee also hold when an earlier caller cancels its returned future, or is this specific loss of ordering accepted?

Why it matters: The unchanged acceptance criterion is: every close future requested during an outstanding Close callback waits for that callback to finish. The cancellation reproduction below violates it. This is a verified defect under the currently stated contract, not an assumption about customer usage.

Evidence checked: Both close remediations, the author replies, the lifecycle Javadoc, all current regressions, and a bounded public-API probe against the exact-head production classes.

Needed from: The responsible SDK maintainer/PR owner. Please choose fixing, accepting this specific risk, or revising the intended contract; another implementation prescription is not needed here.

Suggestions

  • Two small optional simplifications are listed in the details.

What I checked

  • ✅ All 432 tests pass on JDK 11, including the new 3-thread × 3,000-context close regression and earlier numeric/readiness cases.
  • ✅ Coverage verification, Java 6 API compatibility, SDK JAR/sources/Javadoc/release metadata, and example distributions pass.
  • ✅ Exact-head GitHub Actions clean build passes, including formatting.
  • ❌ Cancellation probe: cancelled=true closed=true callbackOutstanding=true lateDone=true lateExceptional=false.

Evidence for the existing finding

[P2] Cancellation releases a later close caller before Close delivery finishes. Start a close with pending events and an unresolved publisher future. Cancel the CompletableFuture returned by closeAsync(). Complete publishing on another thread, holding its Close logger open with a bounded latch. A new closeAsync() now returns an already-successful future while that callback is still outstanding.

The returned first future is also the internal closingFuture_. Cancellation marks it exceptionally completed but does not cancel the separately registered flush callback. That callback sets closed_ at line 806 before invoking the logger. The new branch at lines 789–790 sees closed_ && current.isCompletedExceptionally() and returns a new successful completed future. The probe output above establishes the observable result; no logger waits on its own lifecycle future, and no production source or state was modified.

The latest lock correctly prevents the earlier overlapping-start schedule. However, 2d464a9 also replaces the prior independent Close-logged gate with the caller-visible attempt, exposing this cancellation schedule. A cancelled wait is a normal operation on the public future, not proof that the still-running Close callback has completed. A different caller can therefore believe finalization and its promised event delivery have finished when they have not.

Acceptance criterion, unchanged: every close future requested during an outstanding Close callback waits for that callback to finish. This is the same unresolved original blocker, now demonstrated through cancellation. The observable completion guarantee warrants a local correction unless the responsible owner explicitly accepts this specific exception.

Review details

Scope, intent and evidence

Review round 7. Head: 2d464a9af67f7ee9771455669b432712a433a0db. Supplied base and verified merge-base: 34716f86fe6a0a3de8ca5c6c53562fa9400d45f6. Reviewed all seven commits/eight changed files, current description, paginated conversation/reviews/inline replies and resolved-thread state, and exact-head CI. Final PR fetch confirmed the supplied head/base.

Intent: breaking 2.0.0 read-state guards, numeric type-preserving unit APIs with JavaScript canonical hashing, Ready/Error/Refresh/Close before matching future completion, and no-fetch/no-event refresh after failed initial loading. Affected consumers include public Context/ContextConfig clients, event loggers, lifecycle waiters, experiment assignment/holdout and publication hashing. No rollout flag or deployment ordering is declared. Existing API, baseline tests and public documentation support a high-confidence inference of an established SDK; specific customer adoption is not asserted. The retained finding is directly reproduced and needs no such inference.

Read CONTRIBUTING, relevant README/migration guidance, CHANGELOG, root/module Gradle and formatting/compatibility configuration, and the CI workflow. No applicable AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md found. Independent runtime/API/concurrency and tests/build/simplicity passes were followed by primary reproduction and judgment. The separate maintainer review against released 1.6.3 remains for its participants to reconcile with the explicitly breaking author scope; this review does not override or duplicate it. Its open compatibility decision is not used to infer a new defect here.

Convergence summary — review round 7

  • Unresolved original blockers: 1
  • Remediation regressions: 0 separately counted; cancellation is another violation of the existing close criterion
  • Independent PR-change findings: 0
  • Acceptance criteria still open: every close future requested during an outstanding Close callback waits for that callback to finish
  • Human adjudication requested: yes — b50c6fc and 2d464a9 are consecutive remediations that leave this same invariant unmet; owner choice requested above

Earlier mutable AtomicInteger/AtomicLong, adjacent-Long identity comparison, late readiness and large numeric-formatting cases remain covered by passing regressions. The latest lock fixes the prior overlapping-entry race. Thread resolution alone is not evidence that the unchanged close acceptance criterion holds.

Validation

Verified Java and javac 11.0.32.1 at /usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-arm64. Selected that JDK with JAVA_HOME_11 and JAVA_HOME for Gradle.

  • ./gradlew clean build: local formatter bootstrap failed because download.eclipse.org DNS resolution failed. This was an environment failure, not a source-format result.
  • ./gradlew test jacocoTestCoverageVerification animalsnifferMain :core-api:jar :core-api:sourcesJar :core-api:javadocJar :core-api:generatePomFileForReleasePublication :core-api:generateMetadataFileForReleasePublication :example:assemble: passed; 432 tests, no failures.
  • Exact-head Actions 40529006775, build job 122276332973, completed successfully with Java 11 ./gradlew clean build, covering the formatting gate. Actions run and job both identify the exact reviewed head. Commit statuses contain zero entries; their aggregate pending does not identify a pending check. CodeRabbit's paused review/docstring warning is not a failed repository build gate.
  • git diff --check 34716f86 HEAD: passed.
  • External CloseCancellationProbe.java, compiled with JDK 11 against unmodified exact-head production/test classes and cached test dependencies, reuses the repository fixture. It calls ordinary track, closeAsync, cancel(false) and publisher completion. A five-second latch holds Close delivery; the probe prints the failing result quoted above and releases/joins the worker in finally. No mutation test or source patch was needed.

Tests assert actual exceptions, future state, numeric representations and published hashes. The removed default-read and failed-refresh test identifiers have explicit replacement coverage for the intentional new contracts. Java API unit tests establish the relevant practice level. No demonstrated vacuous-test or uncovered-observable-change finding. Numeric formatting is bounded to 17 precision iterations and cached by unit type; no unbounded customer-input loop or additional remote call introduced.

Passes

Passes (non-blocking): run: core runtime/API/security/data/error paths and performance (Context/config/hashing executable changes), tests/CI/packaging (ContextTest, public API and version metadata), deployment/operations/observability (lifecycle event delivery ordering), behaviour-bearing build configuration (executed Gradle version metadata), cross-cutting simplicity, comment hygiene, diff composition | not run: shared-component blast radius (no frontend source changed).

Comment hygiene

None flagged. Comments preserve non-obvious JavaScript, cached-identity and lifecycle/recovery constraints. The relocated appended cache here to avoid locking comment predates the PR. Java production/tests and executed Gradle are source; Markdown prose is excluded. Comment delimiters are not code.

Diff composition

Diff composition (non-blocking): every file is required for the change; none flagged

Inspected cumulative/intermediate postimages and their changes. No scratch artifact or credential-bearing content identified; endpoint values are documented placeholders and publishing credentials are environment lookups, not embedded secrets.

Simplifications

Simplifications (non-blocking): 2 candidates

  • Hashing.java:41–45 manual digits/exponent/mantissa assembly: smaller alternative is the existing sign plus shortestRoundTrip(magnitude).stripTrailingZeros().toString().replace('E', 'e'). In this branch the positive magnitude is at least 1e21 and the shortest representation has at most 17 significant digits, so BigDecimal already uses scientific notation. LOC delta: -4. Retained optional suggestion; does not replace the necessary shortest-decimal search.
  • Context.java:788,797,1852 atomic wrapper around closingFuture_: both field accesses now occur under closeLock_, so a plain future field guarded by that lock removes redundant atomic indirection. LOC delta: 0; no measured simplification blocker or equivalence-validation claim.

Run a simplification pass locally before pushing: these candidates cost less to address now than as a further review round.

The future closeAsync() returns is shared by every caller. It now ignores
cancel/complete/obtrude from callers, so one caller cancelling it cannot
release the others before the Close event is logged.

❌ Changes requested

The cancellation case is fixed, but one close-ordering blocker remains: inherited completeAsync can still complete the shared close future while the Close callback is running. All 433 tests and exact-head CI pass; the focused reproduction below still violates the earlier completion guarantee.

Next step: The SDK owner should address the remaining completion bypass, or explicitly accept this specific exception to the guarantee.

Must fix

  1. Keep other close callers waiting after external asynchronous completion — a later closeAsync().join() succeeds before the outstanding Close callback finishes. This continues the existing close-ordering finding, represented by Context.java:844–872; no duplicate inline thread added.

Human review required

Question: Will the close-ordering guarantee be preserved when a holder invokes the inherited completeAsync API, or does the SDK owner explicitly accept this specific early-completion exception?

Why it matters: The stable criterion remains every close future requested during an outstanding Close callback waits for that callback to finish. The owner confirmed that the guarantee should hold for cancellation; this reproduction shows that the current protection is incomplete. Please choose fixing this case, accepting its specific risk, or revising the promised contract.

Evidence checked: All three close remediations, the owner's replies, lifecycle documentation, the actual streamsupport backport API, passing regressions, and a bounded two-thread probe against unmodified exact-head classes.

Needed from: The responsible SDK maintainer/PR owner. This is a verified remaining defect under the stated contract, not a hypothetical customer-context assumption.

Suggestions

  • Two small optional simplifications remain in the review details.

What I checked

  • ✅ All 433 tests pass on JDK 11, including cancellation, concurrent closes, late callers, numeric identities and lifecycle reads.
  • ✅ Coverage verification, Java 6 API compatibility, SDK JAR/sources/Javadoc/release metadata and example distributions pass.
  • ✅ Exact-head GitHub Actions clean build passes, including formatting.
  • ❌ A public-API probe reports callbackOutstanding=true firstDone=true lateDone=true lateExceptional=false after completeAsync.

Evidence for the existing finding

[P2] Prevent inherited asynchronous completion from settling the shared close attempt

What goes wrong: Start a close with pending events and an unresolved publisher. Complete publishing on a worker and hold its Close logger open with a bounded latch. From another thread, call first.completeAsync(() -> null, Runnable::run) on the future returned by the initial closeAsync(). A subsequent closeAsync().join() now returns successfully while that callback is still outstanding.

Why: The new CloseAttempt overrides cancel, complete, completeExceptionally and both obtrusion methods, but inherits completeAsync from the exported java8.util.concurrent.CompletableFuture in streamsupport-minifuture 1.7.4. That implementation schedules an AsyncSupply against the same future; its internal completeValue writes the result without dispatching through these overrides. The future is also the context's shared completion gate, so every other close caller observes that early result. This is the actual backport dependency, not an assumption about JDK CompletableFuture.

The JDK 11 probe first prints beforeMutation firstDone=false, then callbackOutstanding=true firstDone=true lateDone=true lateExceptional=false, and successfully joins the late future before releasing the logger latch. No callback waits on its lifecycle future, and no production source or state was patched.

Acceptance criterion, unchanged: every close future requested during an outstanding Close callback waits for that callback to finish. External completion of one caller's future must not release other callers early. This is an unresolved original blocker: 9330024 fixes cancellation but leaves another entry point into the same shared-gate failure. A local completion-boundary correction is proportionate to preserving the explicitly promised event ordering; no broader redesign is required.

Scope, intent and evidence

Review round 8. Head: 933002496855cd5ab350030b188149ebb21a1897. Supplied base and verified merge-base: 34716f86fe6a0a3de8ca5c6c53562fa9400d45f6. Reviewed the full eight-commit/eight-file range as a follow-up to changes requested. Read current description, commits and cumulative/intermediate diffs, paginated conversation/reviews/inline replies, resolved-thread state, and exact-head CI. The retry resumed the same review; no earlier round-8 verdict had been posted.

Declared intent: breaking 2.0.0 read-state checks, type-preserving numeric UIDs with JavaScript canonical hashing, lifecycle events before matching future completion, and no-fetch/no-event refresh after failed initial load. Actual consumers are public Context/ContextConfig clients, event loggers/lifecycle waiters, assignment/holdout hashing and publications. Gradle publication metadata carries the major version. No feature flag or deployment sequencing is declared. The author reports regression tests for each change and confirms that the close guarantee should hold despite cancellation. Existing APIs, baseline tests and documentation support a high-confidence inference of an established public SDK; no specific customer adoption is asserted. The retained defect is directly verified and does not depend on that inference. No material unavailable fact determines the defect verdict.

Read CONTRIBUTING, README migration/unit/finalization/logger guidance, CHANGELOG, root/module Gradle, formatter and Java-compatibility configuration, workflow, and pinned review context. No applicable AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md found. Independent read-only agents covered runtime/API/concurrency/observability and tests/CI/packaging/simplicity; primary reproduced and judged the surviving finding.

The separate maintainer review against released 1.6.3 remains for its participants to reconcile with the author's explicitly breaking scope. This review does not override or duplicate it. Existing completed-data readiness feedback was also read. Thread resolution alone does not prove that this review's close criterion holds.

Convergence summary — review round 8

  • Unresolved original blockers: 1
  • Remediation regressions: 0 separately counted; inherited completion is another violation of the original close criterion
  • Independent PR-change findings: 0
  • Acceptance criteria still open: every close future requested during an outstanding Close callback waits for that callback to finish
  • Human adjudication requested: yes — repeated close remediations still leave this criterion unmet; the owner's cancellation decision is acknowledged, and the remaining bypass is presented for the same fix/accept/contract decision

The earlier reported mutable AtomicInteger/AtomicLong, adjacent-Long comparison, numeric-formatting, asynchronous late-readiness and overlapping-close cases remain covered by passing regressions. The new cancellation regression also passes. The inherited-completion probe is new evidence that the unchanged shared-gate requirement is not yet satisfied.

Validation

Verified Java and javac 11.0.32.1 at /usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-arm64; selected that JDK for every Gradle/build/probe invocation.

  • JAVA_HOME="${JAVA_HOME_11:?}" ./gradlew clean build --no-daemon: formatter bootstrap failed because download.eclipse.org DNS resolution failed. This was environmental, not a source-format failure.
  • JAVA_HOME="${JAVA_HOME_11:?}" ./gradlew build -x spotlessCheck :core-api:sourcesJar :core-api:javadocJar :core-api:generatePomFileForReleasePublication :core-api:generateMetadataFileForReleasePublication --no-daemon: passed; 433 tests, coverage verification, Animal Sniffer, packaging and example distributions passed.
  • Exact-head Actions run 40533759415, build job 122293315672, completed successfully, including Java 11 ./gradlew clean build, covering the formatter gate unavailable locally. Commit statuses contain zero entries; aggregate pending with no statuses is not an outstanding check. CodeRabbit's paused review/docstring warning is not a failed repository build gate.
  • Compiled external CloseAsyncProbe.java with JDK 11 against exact-head production/test classes and resolved dependencies; ran com.absmartly.sdk.CloseAsyncProbe. It reuses ContextTest's fixture, uses ordinary track/close/publisher completion/completeAsync calls, holds Close with a five-second latch, and releases/joins the worker in finally. The output and successful early join are quoted above.
  • git diff --check 34716f8 HEAD: passed. Final PR fetch confirms unchanged supplied head/base.

Tests assert real exceptions, future state, numeric strings and published hashes. Removed returnsDefaultsWhenNotReady is replaced by throwing-contract assertions; removed refreshDoesNotCallPublishWhenFailed actually asserted a data fetch, now deliberately replaced by no-fetch/no-event assertions. Existing Java API unit tests establish the applicable practice level; the unchanged HTTP integration surface does not acquire a new transport contract here. No vacuous-test or uncovered-observable-change blocker was demonstrated. Numeric formatting performs at most 17 precision iterations and remains cached per unit type; no new remote call or unbounded input loop is introduced.

Passes

Passes (non-blocking): run: core runtime/API/security/data/error paths and performance (Context/config/hashing source changes), tests/CI/packaging (ContextTest/public signatures/version), deployment/operations/observability (lifecycle event emission ordering), behaviour-bearing build configuration (executed Gradle version metadata), cross-cutting simplicity, comment hygiene, diff composition | not run: shared-component blast radius (no frontend source changed).

Comment hygiene

Comment hygiene (non-blocking): 26 comment / 604 code lines, ratio ~1:23.2, 0 blocks flagged

threshold T=7; restatements counted: no (10 × C < E)

None flagged. Comments preserve non-obvious cross-SDK formatting, cached-identity, synchronous callback, recovery and shared-completion constraints. Counts include the relocated appended cache comment as an added comment occurrence. Java production/test and executed Gradle paths are source; Markdown prose is excluded. Blank and comment-delimiter-only lines carry no code.

Diff composition

Diff composition (non-blocking): every file is required for the change; none flagged

Pinned introduced_blobs.py 34716f86fe6a0a3de8ca5c6c53562fa9400d45f6 HEAD --repo . succeeded: 26 content writes across eight commits. Inspected cumulative and intermediate changes/postimages; no scratch artifact or credential-bearing content identified. Documented endpoints/keys are placeholders; publication secrets are environment lookups.

Simplifications

Simplifications (non-blocking): 2 candidates

  • Hashing.java:41–45: replace manual digits/exponent/mantissa assembly with the existing sign plus the stripped BigDecimal's toString().replace('E', 'e'). In this branch magnitude is at least 1e21 and the shortest representation has at most 17 significant digits, so scientific notation already has the required positive exponent. LOC delta: -4. Optional, not a replacement for the shortest-round-trip search.
  • Context.java:788,798,1885: a plain future reference guarded by closeLock_ can replace the atomic wrapper around closingFuture_, because all accesses occur under that lock. LOC delta: 0. Optional; no equivalence-validation or blocking simplification claim.

Run a simplification pass locally before pushing: these candidates cost less to address now than as a further review round.

❓ Needs a human decision

The close-completion issue from my earlier reviews is fixed: cancelling or externally completing one caller's future no longer releases other callers. All 434 tests and exact-head CI pass. No code blocker survives under the stated breaking 2.0.0 contract, but conflicting release-compatibility requirements need an owner decision before approval.

Next step: Reconcile the intended release contract with the outstanding maintainer compatibility review.

Human review required

Question: Is this release intentionally allowed to break the released 1.6.3 unit getter signatures, lifecycle-callback waiting behavior and custom-field reads after close, or must it preserve the compatibility bar requested by @marcio-absmartly?

Why it matters: The author explicitly declares these signature/lifecycle changes intentional and covered by the major bump. The maintainer review instead requests preserving those contracts. Current code still implements the breaking behavior; passing tests cannot settle which release contract is authorized.

Evidence checked: Current PR description, all top-level author comments, the maintainer's released-jar review, later reviews/replies, public signatures, lifecycle guards, callback Javadoc and 2.0.0 release notes. No later explicit reconciliation was found.

Needed from: @joalves and @marcio-absmartly, or the responsible SDK release owner. Confirm the compatibility boundary and align release/migration notes with it.

Suggestions

  • Two optional local simplifications remain in the details; neither prevents approval.

What I checked

  • ✅ All 434 tests pass on JDK 11, including concurrent closes, cancellation, external asynchronous completion, failed-publication retry, lifecycle reads and numeric identities.
  • ✅ Coverage verification, Java 6 API compatibility, SDK packaging and example build pass.
  • ✅ Exact-head GitHub Actions build passes, including clean-build formatting.
  • ✅ Independent runtime analysis confirms caller isolation; a JavaScript numeric-format comparison covered 28,392 values with no mismatches.

Scope and intent

Round 9. Head: 9e21d05d9609a009931e6f3cc9e0ad4e30cab338. Base and verified merge-base: 34716f86fe6a0a3de8ca5c6c53562fa9400d45f6. Reviewed the full nine-commit/eight-file range, current description, commits, cumulative/intermediate diffs, paginated reviews/conversation/inline replies, resolved-thread state, and exact-head Actions runs/jobs/statuses.

Intent: breaking read-state guards; type-preserving numeric UIDs and JavaScript hashing; lifecycle events before corresponding future completion; no-fetch/no-event refresh after failed initial load. Actual consumers include Context/ContextConfig clients, lifecycle waiters/loggers, assignment/holdout hashing and publications. Version metadata flows to Maven artifacts. No feature flag or deployment-order dependency is declared. Existing APIs, baseline tests and documentation support a high-confidence inference of an established SDK; specific customer adoption is not asserted. Runtime/test results are verified facts; the authorized compatibility boundary is the material unknown above.

Read CONTRIBUTING, relevant README/migration/unit/finalization/logger guidance, CHANGELOG, root/module Gradle, formatter/compatibility configuration, workflow and pinned review context. No AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md found. Independent read-only runtime and tests/build/simplicity passes were followed by primary inspection, reconciliation and validation.

Convergence summary — review round 9

  • Unresolved original blockers: 0
  • Remediation regressions: 0
  • Independent PR-change findings: 0
  • Acceptance criteria still open: none from this session's verified findings
  • Human adjudication requested: yes — reconcile deliberate 2.0.0 breaks with the separate maintainer's 1.6.3 compatibility requirement. The earlier close-cancellation/completion decision is satisfied, not carried forward as an unknown.

The stable close criterion is met: callers during an outstanding Close callback remain behind the private completion gate; mutating a dependent cannot settle that gate or another caller. The lock preserves one attempt; both publish/empty-queue paths settle after Close delivery; failures retain independent retry results. The inherited completeAsync regression passes. Earlier mutable-number, adjacent-Long, numeric-formatting and asynchronous late-readiness cases remain fixed.

Validation

Verified Java and javac 11.0.32.1, /usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-arm64, explicitly selected for Gradle.

  • Primary: JAVA_HOME="$JAVA_HOME_11" ./gradlew :core-api:test --rerun-tasks --no-daemon --console=plain — passed, 434 tests, zero failures/errors/skips; production/tests recompiled.
  • Primary: JAVA_HOME="$JAVA_HOME_11" ./gradlew build -x spotlessCheck --no-daemon --console=plain — passed, existing outputs up to date. Independent pass executed test :core-api:animalsnifferMain :core-api:jar, assemble, and separate :core-api:jacocoTestReport :core-api:jacocoTestCoverageVerification successfully.
  • Local formatter bootstrap cannot resolve download.eclipse.org, not a source-format failure. Exact-head Actions 40539749590, job build, completed successfully; workflow selects JDK 11 and runs ./gradlew clean build, covering formatting. Commit statuses have zero entries: aggregate pending is not an outstanding status. CodeRabbit's paused review/docstring warning is not a failed repository build gate.
  • Independent runtime comparison: Hashing.unitToString versus Node toFixed(0), 28,392 random/boundary values, zero mismatches.
  • git diff --check 34716f86 HEAD — passed.

An initially overlapping agent test run failed writing XML; the serialized primary rerun succeeded and establishes the result above. A secondary external probe exercised cancellation, completeAsync, completeExceptionally and both obtrusion methods through publication failure/retry on Java 21; repository regressions and primary suite ran on Java 11. No readiness claim relies solely on that secondary probe.

Tests assert real exceptions, future states, numeric strings and published hashes. Removed default-read/failed-refresh tests have replacements for the intentional contracts. Public API unit tests establish the applicable practice level; existing HTTP integration passes. No demonstrated vacuous-test or uncovered-observable-change finding. Numeric conversion is bounded to 17 precision attempts and cached by unit type; no new remote call or unbounded input loop.

Simplifications

Simplifications (non-blocking): 2 candidates

  • Hashing.java:41–45: replace manual scientific digits/exponent/mantissa assembly with existing sign plus stripped BigDecimal toString().replace('E', 'e'). Magnitude ≥1e21 and ≤17 significant digits ensure the required scientific notation. LOC delta: -4. Optional; not a replacement for shortest-round-trip search.
  • Context.java:788,797,1863: a plain future reference under closeLock_ can replace closingFuture_'s atomic wrapper; both accesses hold that monitor. LOC delta: 0. Optional; no scratch-equivalence or blocking-threshold claim.

Run a simplification pass locally before pushing: these candidates cost less to address now than as a further review round.
