Summary

Adds LiteLLM as a built-in provider. LiteLLM is an open source, self hosted AI gateway in front of OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Bedrock, Vertex AI, Azure and others.

A LiteLLM proxy can already be added as an OpenAI-compatible provider, but its model names are aliases set by whoever runs it, so the shared catalog cannot describe them: they get 16K context, 4K output, no vision, and embedding aliases show up as chat. The proxy knows the real values, and this provider uses them:

  • Models from /model/info: context, output limit, vision, tool calling, reasoning and model type (chat, embedding, image, video, TTS) per alias, grouped by upstream provider. Wildcard routes are skipped. Falls back to /models when /model/info returns 401, 403 or 404.
  • Key spend and budget from /key/info: shown for a LiteLLM virtual key.
  • Optional key, default http://localhost:4000/v1, like LM Studio.

Changes

  • defaults.ts, providerRegistry.ts: litellm provider with its own model source and key status.
  • aiSdkProvider.ts: fetchLiteLLMModels and the litellm key status case.
  • ProviderApiConfig.vue, providerImportService.ts: key status display and import alias. Icon is the official LiteLLM mark.
  • README.md: LiteLLM in the provider grid.
  • Tests in basicApiKeyProviders.test.ts and defaultProviders.test.ts.

Tests

  • pnpm run test:main 9750 passed, pnpm run test:renderer 2713 passed.
  • pnpm run lint, format:check, i18n, typecheck: clean.
  • Live against a local LiteLLM proxy with the real AiSdkProvider: model refresh (14 models), check(), chat on gpt-4.1-mini and gemini-2.5-flash, embeddings, image generation, key status for a virtual key, and a wrong key rejected.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added LiteLLM as a provider option, preconfigured with a local proxy address and disabled until configured.
    • LiteLLM can discover supported models from the proxy and display virtual-key usage and remaining budget when available. Model discovery can fall back to the models list when model information is unavailable.
    • Added LiteLLM branding and links to its website and setup resources.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds LiteLLM as an OpenAI-compatible provider. It adds provider registration, model discovery, and key-status handling. Provider settings, documentation, and tests also include LiteLLM.

Changes: LiteLLM provider support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Provider registration
src/main/provider/defaults.ts, src/main/provider/providerRegistry.ts, src/main/provider/providerImportService.ts, src/renderer/src/components/icons/modelIconRegistry.ts, README.md, test/main/provider/defaultProviders.test.ts
The provider catalog and registry include LiteLLM with an OpenAI-compatible API type, a local proxy URL, provider links, and an icon. The import alias and supported-provider table also include LiteLLM. A test checks the default configuration.
Model discovery
src/main/provider/providers/aiSdkProvider.ts, test/main/provider/basicApiKeyProviders.test.ts
Model discovery queries /model/info, maps supported modes and capabilities, combines duplicate aliases, and falls back to /models for specified responses. Tests cover model mapping, capability aggregation, fallback, and error handling.
Key-status reporting
src/main/provider/providers/aiSdkProvider.ts, src/renderer/settings/components/ProviderApiConfig.vue, test/main/provider/basicApiKeyProviders.test.ts
Key-status lookup handles missing keys and 404 responses, reports spend and remaining budget, and runs in settings when a LiteLLM API key is stored. Tests cover status responses and timeout behavior.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to e0d0f

LiteLLM support appears ready to merge after normal checks; no actionable issue remains in the supplied review evidence.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to e0d0f

The integration expands communication with the configured proxy but preserves existing credential handling, caller authorization, timeouts, and model-refresh safeguards. No introduced security bypass was identified. Remote deployments still depend on the proxy’s transport security and access-control configuration.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A party controlling the configured proxy’s responses can influence that provider’s saved alias metadata and displayed usage information. The exposed client credential is the configured provider key; discovery records do not introduce another destination or grant additional proxy-side permissions. Access beyond that key’s permitted scope depends on external proxy authorization, which was not evidenced here.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing IPC registration authorizes callers before route dispatch. Its configured authorizer requires a current top-level application document and rejects unrelated documents; plugin settings documents are restricted to plugin routes. The LiteLLM change does not bypass this renderer-to-main boundary.
  • observed — Discovery reuses the shared authenticated request helper and timeout cleanup. Status reporting uses the same provider fetch layer. Where configured custom headers require manual redirect handling, that layer strips sensitive and custom headers on cross-origin redirects; otherwise it delegates to the underlying fetch implementation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The settings watcher invalidates obsolete status results when provider identity, key, or URL changes and masks the stored key in displayed errors. Reported spend and budget do not become an inference authorization control: LiteLLM retains the fetch-models check strategy rather than the key-status quota check.

Review: add LiteLLM proxy provider

Verdict: Approve. This is the most substantial provider addition in a while, and it's done properly: instead of a bare catalog entry, it adds a real LiteLLM-aware model discovery and key-status integration. LiteLLM is the most widely used open-source self-hosted LLM proxy — same built-in-catalog category as Ollama/LM Studio/Magpie (local infrastructure), not a commercial vendor service. Both touched suites pass (68/68); CI is green.

What it does

Registers LiteLLM as a built-in OpenAI-compatible provider (default http://localhost:4000/v1, disabled by default, no baked-in key), plus:

  • A dedicated litellm model source — LiteLLM model names are aliases chosen by whoever runs the proxy, so the shared model catalog can't describe them. The PR reads the proxy's /model/info management route (correctly resolving to the proxy root, not /v1), which carries per-alias routing mode, token limits, and capabilities. Falls back to plain /models when the key can't read management routes (401/403/404), filtering out wildcard routes.
  • A litellm key-status strategy — spend/budget via /key/info for virtual keys, correctly returning "no status" for a keyless proxy or the master key.
  • Wiring in ProviderApiConfig.vue (key-status provider list) and providerImportService (maps imported LiteLLM configs onto the builtin provider).

Why the discovery logic is right

Three details show the author actually understands LiteLLM's model:

  1. Multi-deployment aliases are merged conservatively — one alias can have several load-balanced deployments, and a request can land on any of them, so the merged entry keeps the smallest limits and only the capabilities every deployment reports. That's the correct semantics, not the lazy "last one wins".
  2. Mode mapping covers the real proxy surface — chat/responses (aliased to Chat, since LiteLLM serves responses models on chat completions too), embedding, image/video generation, TTS; unsupported modes (rerank, moderation, …) and wildcard patterns are skipped rather than mis-shown.
  3. Group derivation (vertex_ai-language-models → vertex_ai) keeps the model list groupable.

Checks performed

  • basicApiKeyProviders.test.ts + defaultProviders.test.ts: 68/68, with 23 LiteLLM-specific assertions covering the management-route discovery, the 401/403/404 fallback path, keyless proxies, and the key-status spend/budget formatting.
  • The harden LiteLLM requests follow-up commit tightened error handling and added 127 test lines — net effect is more defensive, not less.
  • Icon registered in modelIcons (color icon, correctly not in the mono set); README table row added; i18n untouched (no new user copy beyond the provider name).

Minor notes

  • The key-status error path interpolates raw errorText into the thrown message (LiteLLM key check failed: ... - ${errorText). Since this hits the user's own proxy, not a third-party API, the leak surface is minimal, but the Copilot PR (#2427) just established a sanitizing helper pattern for this — worth aligning if that pattern spreads.
  • toLiteLLMProviderGroup maps unknown/empty providers to 'default' — reasonable, just noting the group will show default for custom wrappers.

No blocking concerns.
