Description

Refactor database connection at scenario level to ensure test isolation and cleanup between between scenarios

Resolves: BED-9992

Type of Change

  • Chore (a change that does not modify the application functionality)
  • Bug fix (a change that fixes an issue)
  • New feature / enhancement (a change that adds new functionality)
  • Refactor (no behaviour change)
  • Test coverage
  • Build / CI / tooling

Testing

DAWGS BDD tests Passes in CI

  • Unit tests added / updated
  • Integration tests added / updated
  • Full test suite run (make test_all with CONNECTION_STRING set)

Screenshots (if appropriate):

Driver Impact

  • PostgreSQL driver (drivers/pg)
  • Neo4j driver (drivers/neo4j)

Checklist

  • Code is formatted
  • All existing tests pass
  • go.mod / go.sum are up to date if dependencies changed

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • BDD scenarios now open a database session before running, clear the graph, and close the session afterward.
    • Scenarios run sequentially to help keep database state isolated.
    • Test coverage includes session-opening failures, graph-cleanup errors, and preservation of fixture paths when session setup fails.
    • Setup also verifies that each scenario uses the configured database and clears prior execution state.

Walkthrough

The BDD suite opens a database session for each scenario, resets scenario state through that session, and closes the database session afterward. The suite runs with one worker and no longer clears database nodes through a suite-level initializer.

Changes

BDD Scenario Session Lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Open sessions and reset scenario state
bdd/utils.go, bdd/utils_test.go
resetBeforeScenario clears scenario-local state, opens an injected or default session, assigns its database, and empties the graph. Tests cover session-opening, node-deletion, and write-transaction failures, including wrapped errors and state clearing.
Wire session lifecycle into Godog
bdd/steps_test.go, bdd/utils.go
TestFeatures configures test-data paths and runs with concurrency set to 1. Scenario hooks manage database sessions. The suite-level initializer that cleared database nodes was removed. closeDBSession empties the graph, clears the database reference, and closes the database.

Systems and components

  • observed — bdd (service) was modified; 3 changed files map to changed impact.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in bdd/steps_test.go: Removed the context, log, DAWGS graph, and DAWGS integration imports and deleted InitializeTestSuite, which previously cleared database nodes in a write transaction and terminated on failure. The remaining imports support file operations, testing, and Godog; the two BDD status flags remain.
  • observed — Modified behavior in bdd/steps_test.go: Removed the exported InitializeTestSuite function that cleared the database before the suite ran and called log.Fatalf if clearing failed.
  • observed — Modified behavior in bdd/steps_test.go: Added an after-scenario hook to close the database session. TestFeatures no longer creates a background context, opens an integration session, or initializes dbContext with a database and test-data paths; instead, the suite initializer assigns the test-data paths to an initially empty context. The suite no longer invokes the database-clearing initializer and now runs with concurrency set to 1.
  • observed — Modified behavior in bdd/utils_test.go: Added the DAWGS integration package import for session-related test setup.

Reset and close the current scenario database.

closeDBSession must not call resetBeforeScenario. That method replaces c.db with a new session, so the hook closes the replacement and leaves the scenario database open. It also discards reset and open errors. The final graph cleanup therefore applies to the wrong database.

Reset c.db directly, retain any reset error, and close the original database.

Update closeDBSession to stop calling resetBeforeScenario, which replaces the
database session. Reset the graph directly on the existing c.db, retain any
reset error, and close the original database; ensure the reset error is returned
without skipping the close.

From the most recent CR comment. The comment has a suggested fix too I believe
