Version 1.3.2 declares **Learn PF2e** as the collection entrance (`wiki_landing_page`,
manifest format 1.14), so the portal shows it under **Start here** on the collection page.
It also adds a first-roll primer (GM and player roles, dice notation, DC, AC, HP) to

explains how typed and untyped penalties stack.

## Penalties

Penalties work very much like bonuses. You can have **circumstance penalties**, **status penalties**, and sometimes even **item** penalties. Like bonuses of the same type, you take only the worst all of various penalties of a given type.
For **circumstance**, **status** and **item** penalties, apply only the most severe penalty of each type. A bonus and a penalty of the same type can both apply: a +1 status bonus and a -2 status penalty give a net -1.

*Source: Player Core, p. 400.*
**Untyped penalties** add together. For example, the [[Multiple Attack Penalty|main:multiple_attack_penalty]] and a range penalty both apply when relevant to the same attack; neither replaces the other.

| Result | Total |
|---|---|
| Critical success | DC + 10 or more |
| Success | DC or more |
| Failure | below the DC |
| Success | DC through DC + 9 |
| Failure | DC - 9 through DC - 1 |
| Critical failure | DC - 10 or less |

For example, a total of 28 against DC 18 is a critical success; 27 is a success. A total of 9 is a failure; 8 is a critical failure. These are the degrees **before** adjusting for the die itself.

Then the die itself can shift the result one step:

- A natural 20 (the d20 shows 20) makes the result one step better.
- A natural 1 makes it one step worse.

Critical success is the best degree and critical failure is the worst; the die cannot shift beyond them. Apply a natural 20 or natural 1 before any ability that changes the degree.

If an effect lists no critical success, a critical success does what a success does. Likewise, with no critical failure listed, a critical failure does what a failure does.

Start here to learn the core character and play procedures in this reference. Keep this page open as your route back from individual options.

## Before your first roll

The **Game Master (GM)** presents the world, plays other creatures and decides how the rules apply. Each player usually controls one **player character (PC)**, describing what that character tries to do. Your group makes the rolls and resolves their effects; this wiki supplies the reference and practice examples.

Dice notation tells you what to roll:

- **d20** means a 20-sided die. For a check, roll it and add the applicable modifier from your sheet.
- **1d8+4** means roll one 8-sided die, then add 4.
- **2d8+4** means roll two 8-sided dice, add their results, then add 4 **once**. Rolls of 3 and 6 give `3 + 6 + 4 = 13`.
- **2d4** means roll two 4-sided dice and add their results.

**Difficulty Class (DC)** is the target number for a check. **Armor Class (AC)** is the target DC for Strikes and spell attack rolls; other actions with the attack trait can target different DCs. **Hit Points (HP)** track how much harm a creature can take. Use [[Degrees of Success|main:degrees_of_success]] to interpret a check, then [[Encounter Mode|main:encounter_mode]] for the order of turns and actions.

## Make your first character

1. Follow the [[Character Creation Guide|main:character_creation_guide]], using the [[Character Sheet|main:character_sheet]] as your checklist of numbers.
