Summary

Adds SSE/AVX implementations of hot, data-parallel engine code, selected at
runtime, that produce bit-identical results to the existing scalar code
(the only tolerated difference is the payload bits of a NaN result). On non-x86
targets and in precision=double builds, the original scalar code is used
unchanged, so nothing changes there.

Approach

  • core/math/simd.{h,cpp}: small f32x4 / i32x4 wrappers, CPU feature
    detection, and FMA dispatch used only where the scalar code already calls
    std::fma. Compile-time baselines: SSE2 on x86_32, SSE4.1 on x86_64. AVX /
    AVX2 / FMA / F16C are gated behind runtime checks with scalar/SSE fallbacks.
  • A GODOT_SIMD_LEVEL=sse|avx environment override and a compile-time
    GODOT_SIMD_DISABLE escape hatch make every dispatch path testable.
  • Min/max keep a < b ? a : b operand order, no FMA contraction
    (-ffp-contract=off), round/convert semantics match the scalar casts, and
    reductions that break ties keep the first index — so outputs match the scalar
    code exactly.

What's accelerated

  • Math: AABB convex/plane/ray tests, Transform3D::xform_inv(AABB),
    Basis::get_scale_abs, Vector4 sign/round/clamp, cubic interpolation,
    Quaternion::xform, Plane::intersect_3, Projection::xform_inv,
    Rect2::intersects, Transform2D::xform(Rect2), Color pack/compare/clamp.
  • Culling & physics: frustum SoA scene culling, BVH / DynamicBVH convex
    tests, and the convex vertex scans for 3D/2D shapes (exact integer lanes).
  • Strings: hash, ASCII case mapping, Latin-1 compare, a full SIMD UTF-8
    decoder (errors/NUL/short tails fall back to the scalar loop), and
    Vector<T>::operator== for integer and float element types.
  • Images: format conversion, premultiply, mipmaps, bilinear resize, flips,
    is_invisible, detect_alpha, get_used_rect.
  • Audio: mixing kernels (SSE + AVX for volume/peak/add/ramp), EQ, stereo
    enhance.

Paths where SIMD did not beat scalar (per-call Color/Vector4 equality,
half-float image resize/mipmaps) were deliberately left scalar.

Correctness

tests/core/math/test_simd.h compares every path against verbatim copies
of the original scalar code (simd_reference.h, regenerated from the fork point
by misc/scripts/generate_simd_reference.py) at every runtime dispatch level.
The UTF-8 decoder and the exact-conversion helpers were additionally fuzzed
against the scalar loop (hundreds of millions of inputs, incl. an exhaustive
lead/continuation-byte sweep) out of tree. Full suite passes on x86_64 and
x86_32, in default and GODOT_SIMD_LEVEL=sse modes.

Benchmarks

INCLUDED HERE: simd_benchmark.zip

Measured through the GDScript public API (what a game actually calls) on a
Ryzen 9 7950X, master vs this branch, median of many runs, interleaved on an
idle machine. Representative speedups:

Operation Speedup
String to_lower / to_upper (ASCII) ~55× / ~52×
Image.get_used_rect ~34×
Image.flip_x (L8) / flip_y ~26× / ~12×
PackedByteArray == ~16×
Image.detect_alpha ~7×
image format converts ~3.4–5×
get_string_from_utf8 (ASCII) ~5×
PackedInt32Array == ~5×
bilinear resize (RGBA8) ~2.4×
String.hash ~2.7×

Note: these are GDScript-level timings; raw C++ kernel gains are larger and are
measured by the included test_simd_benchmark.h (skip-by-default). Paths left
scalar sit at ~1.0× (parity), which also serves as a fairness control for the
measurement.

Scope / caveats

  • x86 only; ARM and double-precision builds keep the scalar code.
  • Built and tested with GCC on Linux (x86_64 + x86_32). MSVC/clang-cl and ARM
    have not been built here; AVX kernels include an explicit vzeroupper for the
    AVX→SSE transition on MSVC.

Remove the inline .p2align 6 directive from the function body.

This asm volatile(".p2align 6") runs inside the function body. The assembler may insert padding bytes into the instruction stream at this point. GCC treats the asm as opaque, so it does not know the size of the padding. On x86 the assembler pads with multi-byte NOPs, so execution falls through correctly. The directive can still break the compiler's branch-distance assumptions, and it ties performance to one toolchain's code layout. Clang also defines __GNUC__ and accepts this directive. The PR reports testing only with GCC. Use -falign-loops or a function attribute instead, or remove the directive.

90-95: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Alternate the scalar and SIMD measurement order.

Table::row always measures the scalar implementation first and the SIMD implementation second. Cache warmth, turbo boost and thermal throttling change during a run. With a fixed order, that change always favors the same side, so the speedup column carries a bias in one direction. Interleave the samples (scalar, SIMD, SIMD, scalar, and so on) or randomize the order, and keep the best time for each implementation.

♻️ Proposed fix
 	template <typename S, typename V>
 	void row(const String &p_name, int64_t p_ops, S p_scalar, V p_simd) {
-		const double scalar = measure_ns(p_ops, p_scalar);
-		const double simd = measure_ns(p_ops, p_simd);
+		double scalar = 1e30;
+		double simd = 1e30;
+		for (int round = 0; round < 2; round++) {
+			if (round == 0) {
+				scalar = MIN(scalar, measure_ns(p_ops, p_scalar));
+				simd = MIN(simd, measure_ns(p_ops, p_simd));
+			} else {
+				simd = MIN(simd, measure_ns(p_ops, p_simd));
+				scalar = MIN(scalar, measure_ns(p_ops, p_scalar));
+			}
+		}
 		print_line(vformat("  %-42s %12.2f %12.2f %8.2fx", p_name, scalar, simd, simd > 0 ? scalar / simd : 0.0));
 	}

Based on learnings: "When a benchmark suite always executes competing implementations in a fixed sequential order ... flag this because cache state, thermal throttling, and CPU/GPU clock frequency scaling drift systematically over a run and bias the comparison".

Fix the (short)0x8000 casts that break the Windows build.

0x8000 is the int constant 32768. Casting it to short truncates a constant, so MSVC emits warning C4309. The Windows Editor and Template checks treat that warning as an error, so both builds fail at Line 486. Line 534 has the same cast and also warns. Use a negative constant that fits in short. The bit pattern stays 0x8000, so the output does not change.

…d culling

Adds SSE/AVX implementations of hot, data-parallel engine code, chosen at
runtime, that produce bit-identical results to the existing scalar code
(the only tolerated difference is NaN payload bits). On non-x86 targets and
in double-precision builds the scalar code is used unchanged.

Infrastructure (core/math/simd.{h,cpp}): f32x4 / i32x4 wrappers, CPU feature
detection with a GODOT_SIMD_LEVEL=sse|avx override for testing, and FMA
dispatch only where the scalar code already uses std::fma. Baselines: SSE2 on
x86_32, SSE4.1 on x86_64; AVX/FMA/F16C are gated behind runtime checks.

Accelerated paths:
- Math: AABB convex/plane/ray tests, Transform3D::xform_inv(AABB),
  Basis::get_scale_abs, Vector4 sign/round/clamp, cubic interpolation,
  Quaternion::xform, Plane::intersect_3, Projection::xform_inv,
  Rect2::intersects, Transform2D::xform(Rect2), and Color pack/compare/clamp.
- Culling and physics: frustum SoA scene culling, BVH and DynamicBVH convex
  tests, and the convex vertex scans for 3D and 2D shapes (exact int lanes).
- Strings: hash, ASCII case mapping, Latin-1 compare, and a full SIMD UTF-8
  decoder that hands errors, NUL and short tails back to the scalar loop;
  Vector<T>::operator== for integer and float element types.
- Images: format conversion, premultiply, mipmaps, bilinear resize, flips,
  is_invisible, detect_alpha and get_used_rect (uint8 and float; half-float
  left scalar where SIMD did not help).
- Audio: mixing kernels (SSE, plus AVX for volume/peak, add and ramp), EQ and
  stereo enhance.

Tests: tests/core/math/test_simd.h compares every path against verbatim
copies of the original scalar code (tests/core/math/simd_reference.h,
regenerated by misc/scripts/generate_simd_reference.py) at each dispatch
level; test_simd_benchmark.h is a skip-by-default throughput/latency
benchmark.
