fix(wifi): let esp_wifi enforce saved network security and clean up WiFiManager - #541
Pull the event SSID copy, the placeholder network for the UI and the strongest-first ordering into helpers, inline the isSaved wrapper, and use unnamed parameters in the event handlers. No behaviour change.
evWiFiConnected resolves the credentials ID once, from the scanned entry or Config, and then does a single forgotten-credentials check and broadcast instead of two near-identical branches. The AP lookup for an unscanned network now runs after the networks lock is released.
Connect() reuses requestConnect() and no longer calls esp_wifi_disconnect() when already disconnected. WiFiState values are plain enumerators, not bit flags.
The scan callbacks and the disconnected handler now copy what they need under s_networksMutex and build the portal broadcasts after releasing it. GetConnectedNetwork reads the connected credentials ID and BSSID together under the lock, where evWiFiConnected writes them.
postWiFiState no longer waits when called from the WiFi/IP event handlers: they run on the default event loop's own task, the only one that drains it, so waiting for room could only stall the loop. connectWiFi on the update task keeps its 100 ms wait.
Replace the TODO on the credentials ID refresh in discovery with why it is there.
Take the event's SSID as a uint8_t[32] reference and its length as uint8_t instead of any type with ssid and ssid_len members, so a field of another type or size fails to compile. The length is clamped to the source field.
Forget, Connect and RefreshNetworkCredentials only need the credentials ID, so look up just that instead of copying the whole credentials, password included. Save and Forget share setCredentialsID to tag a network's scanned BSSIDs; Forget now matches them by SSID, which is how the ID was assigned.
attractivityComparer drops its saved-before-unsaved rule, since its only caller skips unsaved networks. connectWiFi loses its unused default arguments and handles both driver call failures in one place.
…y does
Set wifi_sta_config_t.threshold.authmode to the security a network was saved with. esp_wifi then skips every weaker BSSID while connecting, including networks missing from the last scan, which replaces the check in prepareConnectAttempt that only looked at the strongest scanned BSSID. Left unset, esp_wifi requires WPA2 for any password of 8+ characters, so networks saved as WPA or WEP could never connect. The portal gets a readable message for the NO_AP_FOUND security reason codes.
esp_wifi_scan_stop posts a SCAN_DONE, as the WiFi driver guide documents, so WiFiScanManager drops the 2 s Stopping timeout. If esp_wifi_scan_stop fails, the scan goes back to Scanning and finishes normally.
Discovery appends new networks and sorts the list once at the end, instead of inserting each one in order and sorting again when the scan ends. GetConnectedNetwork always asks the driver for the associated AP, which gives the actual BSSID and live RSSI, so s_connectedBSSID goes.
Correct the connect comment: failure_retry_cnt and sort_method only apply to all-channel scans, and sort_method already defaults to by-signal.
WiFi connection handling now passes saved authentication modes to the driver and updates connection state through revised event handling. Network discovery and credential operations use updated lookup and ordering logic. Scan stopping no longer uses a timeout to leave the stopping state.
Connection attempts no longer reject scanned networks based on authentication strength. Connection setup passes the saved authentication mode as the driver threshold and handles configuration or connection failures. The release note describes WPA/WEP connectivity and the portal explanation for security-strength restrictions.
Connection event and state updates components/core/src/wifi/WiFiManager.cpp
State-event posts use caller-specific waits. Connection and disconnection handlers safely copy SSIDs, update connection state, and broadcast scanned network records or placeholders.
Network discovery and credential mapping components/core/src/wifi/WiFiManager.cpp
Network discovery updates entries and sorts them by signal strength. Save, forget, credential refresh, connect, and connected-network lookup use direct credential lookups or driver AP data.
OpenShock/Firmware#535: It adds the scan state machine and timeout that this change revises, and includes related WiFi connection-event handling.

Networks with an unknown auth mode still use the WPA2 default.
Save() can store WIFI_AUTH_MAX for a hidden or out-of-range network. connectWiFi() then leaves config.sta.threshold.authmode unset. ESP-IDF defaults this to WPA2 when the password has at least 8 characters, so WPA and WEP networks can fail to connect.
Proposed fix
if (authMode != WIFI_AUTH_MAX) {
config.sta.threshold.authmode = authMode;
+ } else if (!password.empty()) {+ // Unknown saved security: accept any password-protected mode instead of esp_wifi's WPA2 default+ config.sta.threshold.authmode = WIFI_AUTH_WEP;
}
