Original OpenCCU rootfs patch: 0007
Original filename: 0007-WebUI-Enhanced-FirmwareUpdate.patch
Original patch: ``''https://github.com/OpenCCU/OpenCCU/blob/69aeb6519388ffc708456410963b0d23825b4be6/buildroot-external/package/openccu-base/rootfs-patches/0007-WebUI-Enhanced-FirmwareUpdate.patch''''
Original changes (selection): OpenCCU/OpenCCU@c088fa5c9 (firmware update through the recovery system, OpenCCU/OpenCCU#1336), OpenCCU/OpenCCU@a306f42c3 (backup before the update), OpenCCU/OpenCCU@aa03db6de (update hint), OpenCCU/OpenCCU@1fbc3e518 (WebUI backup with createBackup.sh) and OpenCCU/OpenCCU@336d2ef13 (sha256 check of backups)

The WebUI firmware update, system backup and backup restore of OpenCCU use the OpenCCU tools (recovery system, /bin/createBackup.sh) instead of the CCU3 procedures. This applies the patch 1:1:

  • src/webui/www/config/cp_maintenance.cgi: an uploaded update file is accepted as .tar(.gz), .zip, full SD card image (.img with three partitions), ext4 rootfs or vfat bootfs image. Only the EULA.* files are extracted to /tmp; the uploaded file is linked to /usr/local/.firmwareUpdate and the recovery system performs the actual update. The update is started with an asynchronous request. The optional backup before the update opens in a new window and is created directly (create_backup) instead of via /tmp/createBackup during update_start. Cleanup removes /tmp/EULA.* and /usr/local/tmp/firmwareUpdateFile.
  • src/webui/www/config/backup.tcl: create_backup calls /bin/createBackup.sh /usr/local/tmp/last_backup.sbk and sends the file via X-Sendfile as <hostname>-<version>-<date>-<time>.sbk, or prints the error code and output. read_var/read_version are added for the version in the file name.
  • src/webui/www/config/cp_security.cgi: restore works in /usr/local/tmp instead of /tmp, checks signature.sha256 if present, extracts without owners and timestamp warnings, reads /VERSION, marks the restore with /usr/local/.doBackupRestore and reboots with /sbin/reboot -d 2 instead of kill -SIGQUIT 1. action_create_backup calls create_backup directly.
  • src/webui/www/api/backup/version.cgi: reads /VERSION (LF line endings instead of CR, as in the patch).
  • src/webui/www/webui/js/lang/{de,en}/translate.lang.extension.js and translate.lang.js: the software update text describes the reboot into the update and the progress page; the invalid backup text mentions a consistent backup.

The tools used here (/bin/createBackup.sh, recovery system, /VERSION, parted, e2fsck, unzip) are provided by the OpenCCU OS. HMIdentifier.*.CCUFullNameText already exists. Encodings are preserved. The root www/ copies are unused legacy files and are left unchanged.

Other OpenCCU rootfs patches also modify these files (e.g. 0001, 0031, 0039, 0044, 0061, 0077, 0097, 0099). They still apply with zero fuzz.

Validation

  • The patch applies to this repository's sources with zero fuzz. backup.tcl, cp_maintenance.cgi, cp_security.cgi and version.cgi are complete Tcl scripts (info complete); node --check passes for the four language files; git diff --check is clean.
  • OpenCCU scripts/base-patch-migration.py validate with the canonical Buildroot 2026.08 git4 archive of this branch (7ffa6d02, sha256 6ef6bbae36ce363a839d90904fd94a78d07a5343183ddf0a4e5ee5657d1c789a) and --skip-patch 0007, on OpenCCU master 69aeb6519 (current pin ff52021b): PASS (the other 51 rootfs patches apply with zero fuzz).
  • compare against a validation of the current pin ff52021b with all 52 patches: IDENTICAL (4666 entries). The same result for this change applied directly on the pin ff52021b (without ReGaHss: update binaries to R1.00.0388.0264 #201).

OpenCCU cleanup PR (removing patch 0007 and updating the pin): OpenCCU/OpenCCU#4450

This applies OpenCCU rootfs patch 0007-WebUI-Enhanced-FirmwareUpdate.patch:

- Firmware update upload (cp_maintenance.cgi): accept .tar(.gz), .zip,
full SD card images (.img), ext4 rootfs and vfat bootfs images, only
extract the EULA files to /tmp and link the uploaded file to
/usr/local/.firmwareUpdate, so the recovery system performs the
actual update. Start the update with an asynchronous request and
open the optional backup before the update in a new window.
- System backup (backup.tcl): create the backup with
/bin/createBackup.sh into /usr/local/tmp/last_backup.sbk, send it via
X-Sendfile and include the firmware version and time in the file
  name.
- Backup restore (cp_security.cgi): work in /usr/local/tmp instead of
/tmp, verify signature.sha256 if present, extract without owners and
timestamp warnings, read the version from /VERSION, mark the restore
with /usr/local/.doBackupRestore and reboot instead of signalling
  init.
- api/backup/version.cgi: read /VERSION and use LF line endings.
- Adapt the software update and invalid backup texts (de/en).

📝 Walkthrough

Backup creation and restore handling now use updated version lookup and staging paths. Firmware uploads receive format-specific validation and staging. Firmware update startup and backup actions use revised request flows, and the English and German interface messages describe the updated behavior.

Changes: Backup, restore, and firmware maintenance

Layer / File(s) Summary
Backup creation and download
src/webui/www/config/backup.tcl, src/webui/www/api/backup/version.cgi, src/webui/www/config/cp_maintenance.cgi, src/webui/www/config/cp_security.cgi
Backup creation reads the version from /VERSION, names the backup with the hostname, version, and date/time, and invokes /bin/createBackup.sh. Successful creation returns download headers for the temporary backup. The maintenance action opens backup creation in a new tab, and the security action calls create_backup directly.
Firmware upload and update flow
src/webui/www/config/cp_maintenance.cgi, src/webui/www/webui/js/lang/*/translate.lang.extension.js
Uploads are checked for supported archives, disk images, and filesystems before staging. Update startup uses Ajax.Request; cancellation removes the staged firmware file and /tmp/EULA.*. The update messages describe two restarts and link to the interface for progress monitoring.
Restore staging and validation
src/webui/www/config/cp_security.cgi, src/webui/www/webui/js/lang/*/translate.lang.js
Restore staging and compatibility checks use /usr/local/tmp. Archive extraction uses updated tar options, and restore-check validates signature.sha256 when present. The invalid-backup messages specify that the selected file must contain a consistent system backup.
Restore execution and reboot handling
src/webui/www/config/cp_security.cgi
Successful restore paths create the restore marker where specified, and the legacy restore path schedules a reboot. The successful restore path runs sync; factory reset starts /sbin/reboot.

Restoring a backup can fail because the uploaded file is not where the restore step looks for it. Legacy CCU2 restores can also lose the user data archive. Firmware updates can start before the pre-update backup has finished. Fix the restore paths before merging.

The review concern is supported, but the proposed fix is unsafe. The archive is staged under /usr/local/tmp, and the CCU2_CCU2 restore formats /usr/local before this extraction. Formatting removes the staged archive, so changing only the path cannot restore the archive.

Copy /usr/local/tmp/usr_local.tar.gz to a RAM-backed location before formatting, then extract that copy after /usr/local is remounted. Do not extract directly from /usr/local/tmp after ubiformat.

Stage the uploaded backup in /usr/local/tmp.

action_backup_restore_check reads /usr/local/tmp/new_config.tar, but action_backup_upload stores the upload at /tmp/new_config.tar. The restore check can therefore fail to find the uploaded archive.

Regarding the two findings outside the diff range:

  • cp_security.cgi:649 (CCU2_CCU2 restore with ubiformat): this branch is unreachable on OpenCCU. migration_mode is only CCU2_CCU2 if the running system version is below 3.0.0; OpenCCU always runs 3.x, so a CCU2 backup takes the CCU2_CCU3 path. The block is the original CCU2 NAND code (/dev/mtd6) and is not touched beyond the path changes of the migrated patch.
  • cp_security.cgi action_backup_upload storing to /tmp/new_config.tar: in OpenCCU the later rootfs patch 0031-WebUI-Fix-FileUpload.patch already changes the upload to /usr/local/tmp/new_config.tar, so the resulting rootfs is consistent (verified in the validated rootfs). That change belongs to 0031 and will come to this repository with its own migration; pulling it into this PR would break the one-patch-per-PR equivalence check.

Both stay as is in this PR.
