Add eloop_timeout_remaining and script_envtime so DHCPv4/DHCPv6
dump-lease output can include next_renewal_time, next_rebind_time,
and next_expire_time derived from the active eloop timeouts.

If using privsep, timestamps are always in UTC, otherwise it will
attempt to print them in local timezone format.

Resolves #714

Add eloop_timeout_remaining and script_envtime so DHCPv4/DHCPv6
dump-lease output can include next_renewal_time, next_rebind_time,
and next_expire_time derived from the active eloop timeouts.

Walkthrough

Non-SMALL builds can report remaining DHCP and DHCPv6 renew, rebind, and expiration times in script environments when DHCPCD_DUMPLEASE is enabled. Event-loop APIs provide monotonic elapsed time and matching timeout durations.

Changes

Lease-time export

Layer / File(s) Summary
Query monotonic time and queued timeouts
src/eloop.h, src/eloop.c
The event loop adds APIs to get elapsed monotonic time and find remaining whole seconds for a matching timeout.
Export DHCP lease times
src/dhcp.h, src/dhcp.c, src/dhcp6.h, src/dhcp6.c
DHCP and DHCPv6 exporters report renew, rebind, and expiration times for eligible lease states. Infinite lifetimes are reported as never; missing timeouts are reported as zero.
Add lease times to script environments
src/script.c
When DHCPCD_DUMPLEASE is enabled in non-SMALL builds, make_env adds DHCP and DHCPv6 lease times. Export failures use the existing error path.

Change: Feature

Suggested reviewers: rsmarples

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 13600

The new lease-time fields are absent from DHCPv4 and DHCPv6 -U output, and the implementation does not provide the requested event timestamps. Resolve the dump-path failure and clarify the event-timestamp requirement before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0d58d

The new timestamps remain within the existing authorized lease-dump path. The inspected paths do not add privileges or hook execution, and preserve timer identity and cleanup. External consumers and concurrent use of the timer API remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — An authorized dump reader can receive the new timing metadata for selected active interfaces, or all active interfaces when no interface filter is supplied. Existing address-family filtering also applies. The added exports do not change those selection checks.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — DHCP-server influence over lease timing affects numeric durations and their formatted representation, not field names or executable commands. The inspected dump path provides no new route from that influence to privileged hook execution: DUMP reasons return through script_dump before the hook branch, and daemon dump requests use interface serialization.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Lease dumping retains the existing FD_READ authorization requirement, distinct from FD_CONTROL for non-dump control operations. Export failures propagate through the existing environment-generation error path rather than bypassing authorization or requesting additional authority.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The control handler owns the temporary DHCPCD_DUMPLEASE flag and clears it on both successful completion and dump-error paths. Failures in either interface-send pass therefore do not leave later environment generation unintentionally operating in dump mode.

Explanation

Issue #714 requests historical timestamp information for DHCP and DHCPv6 lease events, including BOUND, RENEW, and REBIND. The change adds time_to_renew, time_to_rebind, and time_to_expire to dump-lease output. These fields report remaining timeout seconds or never; they do not record when a lease event occurred.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The new eloop timeout APIs and time_to_* fields implement future renewal, rebind, and expiration countdown reporting. Issue #714 requests historical timestamps for DHCP and DHCPv6 lease events. The countdown feature does not implement that requirement and has no necessary connection to event timestamp reporting.

I think we should export any timers in seconds rather than do any formatting.
Then scripts can take better actions based on time left more easily.
This should also make the code a lot smaller.

I don't think I like the variable names either.
time_to_renew I think sounds better and is more descriptive once we return seconds.

Make lease-time export work for dhcpcd -U. Both dump entrypoints allocate zeroed protocol states and read saved leases without establishing the live bound state or scheduling lease timeouts. Both new exporters return at their state gates, so a lease dump contains no time_to_* fields. The dump path needs remaining times derived from saved lease data, rather than a lookup of live event-loop timeouts. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

If we're processing an already dumped lease file, we don't know how long it has been since the dump occurred, in that case we should just output the total times rather than time remaining.

This should be specified in the manual to make clear.

If it's reading an old lease file, it skips the time_to_.
A live dhcpcd -U fills time_to_
from the active timers.
