Encoding default and release: 8-bit H.264 by default, publish main #435
Default H.264 output is High 10 (yuv420p10le) without --hardware-acceleration, which QuickTime and Safari cannot play (user report). Make 8-bit yuv420p the default and keep 10-bit as an opt-in recommended for dark gradients — or at least warn.
Release: crates.io still serves 0.7.0 (2026-08-20) while main is 115+ commits ahead and the repository docs describe unreleased features (user report: "the repo docs are ahead of 0.7.0"). Prepare the next release (changelog, version bump) once the regression in the icons issue is fixed. Do not publish without maintainer confirmation.
Definition of done
A test that fails on current main is written first. For anything visual it is a render test (scenario → frame → pixel assertions); tests that build AnimatedProperties by hand are not enough — that is exactly how the regressions listed here slipped through.
Each item is verified end to end: scenario JSON, rustmotion validate, render, image inspected.
Vocabulary changes update crates/rustmotion/skills/SKILL.md, the relevant rules/ file and the exported schema. A field the validator accepts must have an effect, otherwise the validator rejects it or warns.
No comments in Rust code (repository rule). Commits follow <type>: <verb> <message>. No AI attribution in commits, PRs or issue comments.
Item 1 is in #441: 8-bit yuv420p/high is the default, 10-bit stays reachable as --codec h264_10bit, and the four documents that claimed 10-bit was the default are corrected.
Item 2, the release, is deferred by decision — not blocked. Picking it up later means: a version bump, a CHANGELOG.md the repository does not have yet, and cargo publish for the four crates in dependency order.
