Isaac-Pruett/README.md

Hey! I'm Isaac Pruett

Computer Science student at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly SLO).
Passionate about Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), robotics, real-time embedded systems, edge AI, and safe high-performance code.

I build systems that perceive, decide, and act in real time — from traffic anomaly detection on NVIDIA Jetson hardware to autonomous aerial systems for competitive unmanned aircraft. My work spans Rust-based autonomy software, Zenoh-powered distributed systems, and Nix-managed robotics deployments, with prior experience in VEXU competition robotics.

Currently Working On

PolyUAS - A competitive Unmanned Aerial Systems team building drones for C-UAS competitions.

Software + GNC Lead

Designing safety-critical autonomy software, hardware integration layers, and autonomous navigation systems.

Current projects:

  • UAS-Bumblebee — In-progress Rust swarm flight stack, developed as part of my work in PolyUAS.
  • Bumblebee-NixOS — Reproducible NixOS configurations for Raspberry Pi 5 companion compute nodes, using the dendritic pattern to support modular, scalable deployments for PolyUAS projects.

Related work:

  • C-UASC26 — Rust/Python/Zenoh autonomy stack covering control, guidance, navigation, and vision for PolyUAS's 2026 C-UAS competition entry, built on BROS.
  • BROS — Lightweight distributed robotics framework combining Zenoh communications, language-native tooling, code generation/templates, and reproducible Nix-based builds and deployment. Developed as part of my work in PolyUAS.

Other Cool Projects

  • AI-Driven Real-Time Traffic Anomaly Detection
    Summer Undergraduate Research Project (SURP 2025) in collaboration with Caltrans District 5.
    Deploying neural networks on Jetson Orin Nano for mobile, battery-powered highway monitoring.
    → Jetson-RT-Traffic-System (Python, DeepStream, ROS 2)
  • Cal Poly Gear Slingers VEX U Team (2024–2026 Seasons: High Stakes, Push Back)
    Programming lead — wrote performant robot control software in C++ + experimental embedded firmware in Rust.
    → 2025-2026 Current Season + Rust Firmware · MonarchBoard (older C++ firmware)

Tech Stack I Love

  • Languages: Nix · Rust · Python · C/C++
  • Robotics & Embedded: ROS 2 · Zenoh · NVIDIA Jetson/DeepStream · RPi 5 · Mavlink
  • Tools: Cargo · uv · Git · Zed · NixOS · helix
  • Software Design: Applying OOP and architectural design patterns (factory, observer, strategy, pub/sub) to keep robotics codebases modular and maintainable.

Open to collaborations, feedback, or chatting about robotics, Nix/NixOS, embedded Rust, edge AI, or Cal Poly CS life. Feel free to reach out!
