New option --exit-when-done closes the terminal interface when rendering is done - #356
The renderer can now close its terminal interface by itself when rendering stops.
What the user does
The user adds --exit-when-done to the render command. When rendering stops, the terminal interface closes at once and the user is back in the shell. This happens for a render that succeeded and for a render that failed.
Without the option nothing changes: the interface stays open until the user presses Enter.
The result is still visible
The render summary is printed to the terminal after the interface closes, as it is today. It says if the render succeeded, failed or was canceled, and it shows the render id, the input file, the folder with the generated code, and the credits used. An error message is printed below it.
Headless rendering
Headless rendering always ends by itself, so the option changes nothing there.
Where the option can be set
On the command line, or in config.yaml as exit-when-done: true. The command line wins.
No database changes. No other pull request or release is needed.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added the --exit-when-done option to close the terminal interface automatically when rendering succeeds or fails. The render summary is still displayed, and the option is disabled by default.
Added protection against pending log entries being mounted after the log view detaches.
Documentation
Documented the new command-line option, including that it has no effect in headless mode.

Walkthrough
Adds the --exit-when-done CLI option. When enabled, the terminal interface exits after successful or failed rendering. Headless behavior is unchanged. Log entries are not mounted when the view is detached.

Summary
Add and pass the exit option plain2code_arguments.py, plain2code.py, docs/plain2code_cli.md, tests/test_exit_when_done.py
The parser adds --exit-when-done, disabled by default. The CLI passes its value to Plain2CodeTUI. The reference documents the option and its headless-mode behavior. Parser tests cover the default and enabled values.
Exit after render completion tui/plain2code_tui.py, tui/components.py, tests/test_exit_when_done.py, tests/test_terminal_attachment.py
When enabled, the TUI queues an exit after successful or failed rendering. StructuredLogView.add_log returns if the view is detached before mounting a spacer or log entry. Tests cover completion events, threaded log publication, and the default setting in the terminal-attachment fixture.

Automatic exit can hide a render failure’s reason, and a configured automatic exit cannot be disabled from the command line. Both have workarounds but merit follow-up.

Calling exit() like this can cause race conditions - app can exit before the last log lines are drawn in TUI. Tested locally I sometimes got an ugly MountError traceback (running --exit-when-done with --force-render on the hello world example in a loop -- try it yourself)
Instead let's queue the exit after the pending log drawing with self.call_later(self.exit)

Added a commit to address this. The add log now checks if the log view has already been removed before adding another line. Also the exit now occurs after the log lines that are already in the queue.

Allow the command line to disable a configured automatic exit.
If config.yaml sets exit-when-done: true, --exit-when-done is the only command-line form and also sets the value to true. The user cannot override the config value to keep the TUI open. Use argparse.BooleanOptionalAction so --no-exit-when-done can take precedence, and document that form. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the argparse definition for --exit-when-done to use BooleanOptionalAction
and document the generated --no-exit-when-done form. Ensure an explicit negative
CLI option overrides exit-when-done: true from config.yaml, while preserving the
configured value when neither form is supplied.

Persist the state-machine failure reason in the post-exit summary.
A reachable RENDER_FAILED path publishes RenderFailed without raising. on_render_failed displays event.error_message in the TUI and then exits. The later print_exit_summary call receives no error message, so it prints only “rendering failed”. Store the event message in RunState before exiting and pass it to print_exit_summary.

Review comment at @tui/plain2code_tui.py at line 353:
In on_render_failed, retain event.error_message in RunState before exiting, then
ensure the post-exit print_exit_summary call uses that stored message when no
other error message is available. Preserve the existing summary behavior when no
render failure message was recorded.

The new option --exit-when-done closes the terminal interface as soon as
rendering stops, for success and for failure. Without it the interface
stays open until the user presses Enter.
The render summary still goes to the terminal after the interface closes,
so the user sees the outcome. Headless rendering is not affected, because
it always ends by itself.
Log lines reach the TUI from the render thread and are drawn later via
call_later(add_log). With --exit-when-done the TUI exited right after
RenderCompleted/RenderFailed, so log entries still pending (or published
after the final event) were mounted into the torn-down log view. That
raised MountError and dumped a traceback on the terminal before the
render summary.
- StructuredLogView.add_log drops an entry once the view is detached,
checked right before each mount.
- The exit is queued with call_later, behind the log entries already
scheduled, so those are still drawn before shutdown.
- Regression test starts the render thread from on_ready, as
plain2code.render() does, and publishes log lines around the final
event; it fails without the fix.
Show why the render failed after the TUI closes. A failure inside the
render machine publishes RenderFailed without raising, so main() had no
error message and the summary printed only "rendering failed". With
--exit-when-done the TUI closes at once, so the reason ended up only in
the log file. The TUI now keeps the reason on RunState and main() uses
it as a fallback for the summary; a raised error still takes precedence.
Headless mode is unchanged: the TUI handler never runs there, and the
narration already prints the reason.
Let the command line turn off an exit configured in config.yaml:
--exit-when-done is now a BooleanOptionalAction, so --no-exit-when-done
overrides "exit-when-done: true", like --no-log-to-file does. CLI docs
regenerated.
