MCP setup — install & configure (all clients)

1. Verify the server (no auth)

2. Cursor (recommended for developers)

Install: Cursor marketplace — AgentStack or local dev: node provided_plugins/cursor-plugin/scripts/install-local.mjs → Developer: Reload Window.

Auth (pick one):

3. Claude Code

After installing the Claude plugin, run /agentstack:login (Device Code), or:

4. VS Code

Install the AgentStack extension from the marketplace, open the command palette → AgentStack: Sign in or paste an API key into SecretStorage.

5. ChatGPT & Gemini (browser)

No local mcp.json — configure inside the chat product:

6. Anonymous project (try without signup)

For GPT Actions, scripts, or any key-based client before you have an account:

Response includes top-level user_api_key / project_api_key and neutral bootstrap metadata (header names only — no secrets duplicated in prose).

Configure your client once with X-API-Key (or Bearer where supported). Do not ask the model to “remember” the key — use env, mcp.json, or the host’s secret store.

Cursor users: prefer OAuth (§2) instead of anonymous create.

8. Troubleshooting

Symptom Fix
401 / unauthorized Re-run Connect or /agentstack-authorize; check key at Profile → API keys
Empty tools list URL must be https://agentstack.tech/mcp (not /api/...)
service_cap_denied Widen API key caps or use a key with the needed domain
Stale action names GET /mcp/actions with If-None-Match / catalog_etag; run discovery.list
Cursor plugin missing MCP Reload Window; click Connect on plugin MCP — do not hand-edit plugin mcp.json with empty Bearer
